Played yesterday 12/1 getting off just before 1pm and managed to finish 15 holes in about 4:15 before calling it a day due to darkness. Rat-patrol's previous review is pretty much spot on. Tee boxes were mostly okay with some crowned areas on the Par 3s. Greens were quick and a little bumpy but very playable. Fairways could use a haircut but are filling in nicely. Very little roll out there between the fairway length, kikuyu, and recent rains. Front 9 POP was 2:40 due to it being cart path only and the depth of the rough. Speaking of which... my current review of the rough is as follows: AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH DON'T GO THERE! ABANDON HOPE ALL BALLS THAT ENTER THIS DOMAIN!!

Tee boxes: Ok
Rough: filling in, not yet as thick and sticky as the North already is
Fairways: lots of unrepaired divots and in need of a mow, no roll
Bunkers: tight but playable
Greens: fast and a bit bumpy . . . tough combo when you are actually trying to make putts
POP: slow, waited on every shot (I believe it was cart path only and the price people pay they are trying to eek out every bit of time on the course as possible)
Customer service: saw the snack cart a few times
Overall: they are bringing the course into form for the Farmer's so conditions are not ideal at the moment

Course is in very good to excellent condition. Tee boxes good. Fairways are green and lush, and they have the grass a bit longer so not a lot of roll. Rough is starting to be punishing again - it's very lush and they're growing it a bit longer, and our group had a number of lost balls even though we had a good idea where the ball went into the deep stuff. Greens are very good, and were soft enough to hold longer shots in but rolled quite true and quickly. Only issue was the green side bunkers, where they're overwatering everything around the greens and as a result all the bunkers we were in were very hard sand that was packed together. Fairway bunkers were soft and fluffy but the green side bunkers were hard and firm, just the opposite of what one would like. If they get the grounds crew in work the sand better, the course would be in the best shape I've seen it outside of what the PGA players get to enjoy.

Played this past October as they just finished over seeding and punching 2 weeks prior. The South course is in immaculate shape! Obviously this course is known for the yearly Farmers Insurance Open, so it's pretty hard to get a tee time here. But I was able to play with my grandfather and had a great time. Everything from tee boxes to the greens were in great shape. Shout out to the crew at Torrey Pines for making it a great experience.

Played a couple of times this past weekend in the 7ish time slot. Overall the course is really worn down. Its definitely being prepped for the maintenance in a couple of weeks. There are lots of bare areas and there is a good chance you'll find yourself facing the challenge of trying to hit a chip over a bunker from a lie that won't let you do that. Many bunkers had very little sand in them which is ok from the fairway ones but really tough from the greenside ones. Greens are in pretty decent shape and rolled at a medium pace but I'd still wait until after the maintenance until playing. Even after that there is not much time to play before the Farmers. After the Farmers the course will be starting its renovations for the Open so the window to play here is closing fast.

First off twilight with a couple of the Balboa boys. I thought the course was in rather nice condition considering the ongoing drought and high temps the last few months.
Tees: level and wide, great grass coverage
Fairways: absolutely perfect in the areas you should be playing from, some dry areas but NO dirt areas
Rough: sticky and thick like always . . . ain't it lovely?
Traps: well manicured, some thin spots and come wet spots, but perfectly playable
Greens, aprons and green edges: most greens were very nice ( a few bumps late in the day, but that's life after twilight) run ups/aprons were great with some looking brand new and perfect, green edges had some thatched areas, but deal with it, it's thick, nasty and lovely!
POP: just under 4.5, finished with plenty of daylight left
Customer service: saw a snack cart 3 or 4 times, last call when we were playing 10
Recommendation: yes, play it now . . . just remember that it is a big boy course and will eat your lunch if you err in the least!

Played yesterday morning and was the fourth group out. Overall pace was about 4:15. There was a shotgun at 8 that started on the back so once they finished the back 9 the pace did pick up at the end.

Greens are decent. They are probably rolling at an average pace. There were guys out watering as we were playing so maybe they would be a little faster as they dried out. Seeing how they were watered there was quite a big ball mark as your approach shot hit the green. Less ball marks overall than I expected so that was good. Still some old ones that hadn’t been properly repaired but I’ve seen way more in previous visits.

Rough for the most part is down but there were a handful of areas that were really thick. Mowers were out so maybe they just hadn’t gotten to them yet. There were also many dead areas out there which is disappointing but considering the summer I guess that is to be expected. Chances are you’ll likely have to deal with a lie in this and it’s no fun.

Fairways are decent. Like most other courses they do show signs of the heat taking its toll but still pretty good to hit from. Good coverage and mowed at a good height.

In a couple of traps and I didn’t have a problem with them. Seemed to be sand in the ones I hit from.

Considering little brother is still recovering from maintenance this is certainly in better shape but still needs some TLC. If you were a non resident I’d say it’s better to wait u til after the fall maintenance is completed. If you were a resident and think the fee is high then you’ll probably not justify the conditions right now.

It had been almost twenty years since I last played Torrey - south. (Primarily due to the price) While I was looking forward to playing, I had concerns about getting out without a tee time, but since I showed up early and was first in line -no problem. First off at 6:20am. Paired up with two other walkers and one rider. Decent pace of play at three hours 40 minutes.

Although the greens were multi-colored, they putted better than they looked. No too fast, but quick enough to get your attention on the downhill putts. Fairways for the most part were good, but I was very disappointed in the greenside bunkers, which I spent much of the morning struggling to play from. Not enough sand to get that "thump" which you need to get up and out.

I remembered the course very well, but twenty years has caused many of holes to play much longer. ( d%mn Father Time !) I can not imagine playing this course from the tips under U S Open conditions ! No chance I would break 100 !

Played a couple times over the past week so I'm just summarizing all the reviews. Pace was anywhere between 3-4 1/2 hours.

I thought the greens were rolling great. They don't look all that well because I was told that the "lighter" colored grass is actually a fungus that they been treating. They still rolled great in my opinion. I thought the practice green and actual greens were pretty consistent. A few unrepaired ball marks here and there but not as much as usual. Greens were holding shots well.

Some of the par 3 tee boxes are torn up but others are fine. I never had a problem finding a spot to tee off from.

Some bunkers were great, others needed to be raked, some the workers were upkeeping and so these were consider GUR, and some were really damp. This is the hardest part to rate because it was such a mixed bag. Generally greenside most greenside bunkers had been raked.

Fairways were good. Very nice turf to hit from and there is adequate roll on them. Seemed like the divots had generally been filled with a few exceptions here and there. I don't remember any dry spots in the fairways generally you'll have consistent turf.

Rough is down so its pretty playable. Still some balls can get down and have an impact on your next shot but generally I don't think it was too penalizing. There are a few more bare and dry spots in the rough. I certainly would rather the focus be on the fairways and greens thou.

Customer service is always great. Marshal was consistently present as was the cart girl.
