Played Ojai Valley Inn Thursday last week with longball23 and Robstretch. Weather was beautiful as was the course. This was my 4th time playing the course and it becomes more enjoyable with every succeeding round. I love the relaxed nature of the location given the Inn, the sounding mountain backdrops, the large majestic trees, the wildlife (deer & hawks) and the layout of the course. It’s not an overpowering type layout but rather a thinking shot makers course. Yes, there are holes like 2, 7, 16 – 18 that are tough and tight but in general you don’t feel intimidated. However, is you fail to bring your wedge shots and short game expect big numbers on your card. Hole 16 is in my opinion one of the most beautiful and difficult par 3’s I’ve ever played. I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed consistently double bogeying a hole. LOL.

The conditions of the course were very good. I liked that the kikuyu rough was not as high this time around (last played the course August 2009 – read previous review). Although not as high it certainly came into play. The greens were a bit slower than the last time too however I was thankful for this since the pin position of the day had some nasty undulations to deal with. The greens rolled smooth, true and held shots like darts. The fairways were in lush condition and the tee boxes well maintained. I understand the course will be doing a verticut on the fairways to apply some winter overseed in late October. In talking with the staff, they say the course plays different over the winter/spring months than in the summer/early fall. In the summer you have soft greens/fairways but extremely difficult rough. In the winter, you have lighting fast firm smooth greens with firm tight lush fairways and much less rough to contend with. Either season, you can’t go wrong.

I think if I needed to go somewhere to unwind and tee it up, Ojai Valley Inn would be my first Southern California choice. It’s really easy to get lost in the ambiance of the place and simply forget what’s on your mind. Relaxing Pace of Play with few golfers. I love this course and highly recommend it.

Ojai Valley Inn & Spa is not just a round of golf, it’s an experience. The pro shop is literally tucked away within the Ojai Valley Inn itself. There is a relaxing comfortable vibe that everyone who works there and is visiting at the Inn has. It’s a place where people go to unwind and relax in a beautiful setting with a gorgeous course immaculately kept. The restaurants, service, and high class setup are impressive. I don’t normally comment so much on the facilities and ambiance of a place but not do so is to remove a key piece of the enjoyment factor of coming to play here.

Regarding the course conditions, again, immaculately kept on this August 10th day. Greens held shots superbly and rolled true. Fairways were very lush. Rough, very lush and THICK (kikuyu grass thrives in summer heat and if you never played deep thick kikuyu rough before, you won’t believe how difficult it is. This stuff will grab your club head and make it do all kinds of unexpected things.) Sand traps, I was in 4 today, all very well kept with excellent quality, and tee boxes lush and small.

Regarding the course layout, extremely interesting and challenging. It’s only 6300 yards from the back tees yet plays much longer. Being the turf is prominently kikuya and bermunda, you will get little roll in the fairways and if you stray from the fairway, the rough immediately stops your ball. The tee shots are tight with huge majestic mature trees to shape shots around. The greens feature some multi-tiers and challenging undulations. Some greens on the front nine have diabolical false fronts to content with. Around all the greens there are deep strategically placed bunkers, but trust me, you would rather be in those then in kikuyu rough which at times was a good 5 inches long. One thing about the layout you certainly will enjoy is the gorgeous mountain backdrops. There are plenty of them and you may even be lucky enough to spot some deer grazing on the 7th hole.

Like longball23, stated, this place hosted 7 Senior Tour events and has been around since 1932. The place has so much tradition, beauty and challenge making it a very hard combo to find. I recommend everyone to experience Ojai Valley Inn.
