Walked the blues with my wife, and another couple we were paired with on Friday 8/11 at 1pm. The weather was a gorgeous 75 degrees, with a 15mph wind blowing the entire round. POP was about 4:30. The staff is great at Olivas, and Friday was no exception. The course is extremely green and lush right now, with the fairways looking like carpet. They were a pleasure to hit from, and easily the best part of the course. Tee boxes were all level and lush. The sand traps had nice soft sand in them, making them easy to blast out of. The two biggest changes to the course since I was there a year ago are the rough, and the greens. The rains from the beginning of the year definitely made all of the rough/long grasses grow A LOT. There are places that if your ball is 1 YARD off the fairway, you won't find your ball. This definitely slowed the pace of play. I'm of the opinion that some of it needs to be cut down. I know, I know, don't hit it in the rough and you won't have to worry about it. The biggest concern for me were the greens. The last time I was at Olivas, the greens were immaculate. Right now, well...I'm thinking of an opposite word for immaculate. Awful is too strong, but they are not in good shape at all. They were extremely slow, running approximately 8.5 on the stimp. The bigger issue was all of the ball marks. Every single green was a mess. The par 3's looked like mine fields. There was absolutely no way to keep putts on line, as they bounced and bobbled all over the place. Not good. For me, this is a deal killer. It pains me to say this, but due to the condition of the greens right now, I can't recommend it. I'll be spending my time in Oxnard down the way at River Ridge.

Good morning GK golfers. This last Saturday, I had the opportunity to get out and play a round of golf. I played the Oliva's Golf Course. My tee time was at 2:27 PM, I waited almost every hole. The golf course was so busy as all of the Valley Golfers are coming down to play in Ventura County due to the heat.

The course is in a great shape. The tees where very clean, not lots of debits and level, fair ways are in great condition, and the sand bankers had plenty of sand that made it easy to hit your shot from. The only thing that needs a little TLC is the greens. I fixed many debits as golfers weren't fixing their debits, which made the greens very bouncing. It took me 5.5 hours to finish my round.

Customer services at Olivas are always so good and friendly. I rate this golf course a 8. GK golfers get out there and hit the ball. Have fun and enjoy the game we all love.

Played 27 holes from the Blues (6530/71.6/127) in 5.5H with GDR23 & Mack twilight. The conditions were clear, around 80 and a steady 2 club wind the entire afternoon.

The tees were mostly lush with only the par 3's not close to immaculate.

The fairways were lush and soft. The few poor areas were clearly marked as GUR.

The rough around the fairway is mostly lush. Farther off the fairway you could encounter hardpan to waist deep or anything in between.

The traps have good, fine quality sand but for my 3rd straight round here did not appear to have been recently raked. The foot prints were too numerous, plus the green side trap on #5 and the fairway trap on #9 had sprinkler runoff issues.

The greens were medium speed and bumpy for Olivas. Softer than usual, which produced footprints and ball marks in excess on most greens. Definitely not the firm, medium fast, smooth greens I remember @ Olivas.

Customer service excellent as always. One of the best walking courses around. Flat with no long hikes in between holes. Excellent warm up/practice facilities. Really like the multiple chipping areas. Driving range moved back to the outer edge and on mats yesterday. Minimal food & drink available onsite, the no frills pro shop is in a trailer. No GPS on carts, usually no drink cart, so plan ahead if you need food/beverage. Recommended.

Rode the blues this afternoon 8/7/2017 on an EZLink promo code special for $16.49 with my buddies Nickesquire and Mack. Weather was breezy(2 club wind) and in the 70's beautiful weather. We played 27 holes in 5 hours--great POP finishing the 1st round in 3.5 hrs. The fairways are just flat out green and beautiful, Very full and lush with your ball sitting up nicely. They have grown out some since my last round here. Rated 8.5/10 The tees are PGA tour quality--level, lush, green and striped beautifully--rated 9/10 The rough is lush, beautiful and very green --if you are off the fairways past the cartpath they have really grown it up US open style or worse. Rated 8.5/10 The bunkers are more on the firm side for Olivas. Looks like they have some hoses around some of the bunker areas and looks like they are wanting to do maintenance around some bunkers. Most of the bunkers were firm and crusty. I was 3/3 on sand saves today but beware they are not in the usual 9/10 category. Rating the bunkers a 7/10 today with a couple of them not even being raked. The greens were really the only semi disappointing aspect of the course. More than the usual share of ballmarks. Rolling semi bumpy and very grainy. Rating the greens a 6.5/10. Overall the tees, rough and fairways are beautiful. Greens are so/so--still highly recommended--great course.

One of my very favorite courses - period ! Some courses just fit your eye and this one does that for me. As a walker, this course is as good a walking course as you'll find. Plus it is interesting and challenging without being unnecessarily penal.

Now I know better ! I did not check the last review by Nick prior to playing, so I have no excuse for not knowing about the maintenance work on the fringe areas, but it did not cause any real problems. The staff here is ALWAYS friendly and accommodating and using a groupon, price was right. The only complaint I have is that some of the areas adjacent to the fairways are rather scruffy and it's a "crap-shoot" what kind of lie you'll end up with. But you're not supposed to miss fairways - right ?

Played the Blues (6530/71.6/127) in less than 2.5H as a single on a Tee off special for $19. Riding twilight, I played through several groups and zipped around. The weather was clear and in the 70's, with a 1-2 club breeze the entire round. Olivas is everything you would look for in a walking course. Flat with no super long walks in between holes. Excellent practice facilities. Grass driving range complete with a good chipping and sand practice area that they have expanded to include a separate chipping area off to the side of the chipping green. Large putting green that is usually very comparable to the course. While the conditions are still well above average for a So Cal municipal course, my last 2 rounds here makes me wonder if they have changed maintenance staffs recently? The tees were mostly lush with only the par 3's not close to immaculate.

The fairways were fairly lush and soft. The few poor areas were clearly marked as GUR.

The rough around the fairway is mostly lush. Farther off the fairway you could encounter hardpan to waist deep or anything in between. You need to know where the real deep stuff is barely off fairways and plan accordingly.

The traps had good sand but were not well maintained today. Numerous foot prints and the one green side trap I was in had sprinkler runoff issues.

The greens usually are good to very good here. Today however, they were soft which held irons close to the ball mark. The downside was this produced lots of footprints and ball marks. Medium speed and bumpier than I would expect from Olivas because of this. The fringes had been recently aerated, and on about 1/2 the greens they had done 12-15' wide sections around some of the greens edges. Definitely affected chips and putts from the inside or on the wrong side of the aerated areas.

I have never not had excellent customer service here. Minimal food available onsite, the no frills pro shop is in a trailer. No GPS on carts, usually no drink cart, so plan ahead if you need food/beverage. Olivas is an excellent layout to walk, very flat with no super long walks in between holes. Excellent practice facilities. Overall considering the usual playing conditions, price and layout, one of the better deals in So Cal. Definitely recommended.

Walked the Blacks (73.0-130-6818) this afternoon 7/18/2017 joined by a very nice kick-back couple. Paid $16.49 on a teeoff promo special--declined the cart that came with the deal. POP was a shade under 4 hours waiting behind multiple 4somes on a very busy beautiful summer Monday at Olivas. Felt humid for Ventura with hardly any wind and mid 70 temps. The course is just in fabulous lush shape. Not sure what was more lush--the fairways or tees. Fairways were super green/lush with no problem areas. July is the best time to experience Olivas's fairways. Rated a 8.5/10. The tees were rated a 9/10 for me. Rarely do I give a 9. Lush, level and cut beautifully with no damage on the 4's or 5's and very minimal damage on the 3's. Looked like they had the tees in different positions today. The black tee box on #16 has filled in nicely. The greens were in good shape. Rated a 7/10 for me. I probably fixed an extra 4 ballmarks per green while waiting on the group ahead of us. It seems at Olivas since the greens hold so softly that the ballmarks really sink in here. Putts were smooth today. Some nice challenging pin placements today(number 3 on the pin sheet). Was in fairway bunker on 7 that was raked beautifully and contained the right amount of sand to hit a wedge out of. Was not in any greenside bunkers but historically and looking at them today walking by they are always cream of the crop. The rough is lush/green and in great shape surrounding the fairways. Very sticky stuff in certain parts. I hit a bomb on #2 and was 1 foot off the fairway with my ball sitting down almost 3 inches in thick rough. Rough rating 8/10. The staff here is great, the practice facility is great, great weather, great twilight and super twilight prices, great layout--one of the better courses in SoCal for your wallet.

Played as a replay on Saturday 6/24 with the first round being at Buena Ventura, cost for the replay was $20 and that included the cart. POP was just under 5 hours playing as a foursome at 2:00. I assume the course was busier than normal as Buena Ventura had a shotgun start at 2:00 and was closed for the tournament so they were sending all the walkons over to Olivas.

Overall the course was in great shape with tee boxes being level with minimal divot damage. Fairways were like carpet with great lies and the ball sitting up nicely. The rough was penal, but fair unless you found yourself in the extremely long stuff way off to the side. Greens had very little ball marks, putted fairly quick, but were getting bumpy, I assume it was just from the foot traffic earlier in the day. The sand was easy to blast out of and had enough base for it not to be problematic.

I enjoy this layout and course more each time I play it, and for the rate of $65 to play this after playing Buena Ventura in the morning I don't see how you could go wrong and I will be back.
