Played today with a tee time before 12 noon. Got one of deal from teeoff.com . POP was around 4 1/2 hours to play 18. It got a little slow on the back 9 when all the groups in front of us got caught up as they were letting groups out before their scheduled tee times. Par 3s on the back nine was a little backed up.

Course conditions are the best I've seen for this time of year. The tee boxes had good coverage. The fairways had excellent coverage from tee to green. Fairways were fairly green. The only bare spots on the fairways were divots that were not filled in with sand. I did notice that some of the fairways on the back 9 were punched but it did not interfere with play. Rough can be a little tough. I did encounter some spots on the fairways that were a little mushy. We were told if you ball landed in nature areas that you need to pick the ball up, take a penalty shot and drop outside the nature area. Plus there were signs in the nature areas that no carts were allowed in this area.

Landed in a couple of bunkers. Bunkers were mostly dirt. Couldn't play out of sand like you normally would. Greens were in great shape. I did notice that some of the greens were a little soft as my soft spikes were leaving marks on the greens. Putts on the greens were rolling a little fast.

Love the layout of this course. This is kind of a links style course. Fairways were fairly wide. You just need to keep your shots on the fairways. There is water on this course but it was mostly off to the side and hidden behind tall weeks. There is a driving range here and a chipping and putting areas. I just didn't like that both the bathroom and clubhouse are in a couple big mobile home trailers. Carts don't have GPS in it. You need to bring your own to help you determine yardage to the greens. This is not an easy course to play.

I had the 5:32 a.m. TeeOff.com "Deal" time here on Monday. Checked in around 5:15 and was given a cart key and told I could go whenever I wanted. It was still completely dark, so I hit some putts on the practice putting green, which had to be one of the purest, most perfect greens I've ever putted on. Then a single hustled over to the tee around 5:20, so I let him go and I played by myself behind him. He was really quick and I saw him finishing 17 as I was coming off 12. My POP was a leisurely 2:55. Cloudy, misty weather the whole round with very little wind to speak of.

Conditions are excellent! The greens were nearly flawless, although I did find a few fresh-looking unfixed ball marks on some greens, so I assume the speedster ahead of me wasn't fixing his ball marks. Otherwise they were smooth, medium-fast and accepted full shots well. Personally I feel firmer greens would suit this course better, but it's hard to complain at all about these (9/10). Fairways were also nearly perfect. Outstanding coverage and the ball sat up great. The rough had good coverage but was a little patchy, so I rated it a notch lower than the fairways. The tee boxes had fantastic grass but some were a bit spongy and lumpy, maybe due to playing so early and wet? Still very good, though. I wasn't in a bunker but they looked great.

I just love this course more each time I play it. I had so much fun being out there yesterday, just me and the course. Right now there are little yellow flowers blooming around the edges of the course (see my Instagram post) that have it looking awesome. There's also the orange-hued native areas that contrast so beautifully with the green fairways and rough. If you'd told me a few years ago that a flat, links-style course would become one of my favorite courses anywhere, I'd have told you you're crazy, but something about this place just casts a spell on me. Can't wait to get back again!

Rode the Blues (71.6-127-6530) yesterday afternoon 6/3/17 teeing off at 2:20pm on an EZlink promo code deal for $24.00. Joined by my 3 buddies Mack, Matt and Pedro. We had a blast playing in 4 hours 15 minutes not waiting at all playing in what felt like Scotland morning weather. It was 90 degrees in Moorpark yesterday--when I arrived in Ventura it was 65 degrees, super foggy with a light mist and about a 7mph wind for most of the day--it got downright cold the last 2 holes-- Super staff(logan,Michelle) got us checked in and ready to go. They have the grass range going on weekends. This is a super place to practice chipping and your short game--they have a huge putting green, huge chipping green including a practice bunker similar to the bunkers on the course. The fairways are in very good shape--mostly lush and green with enough padding under the ball. They just had their City Championships last week so this is the time of the year to experience nice rough and fairways conditions at Olivas. Rated 8/10 Speaking of the rough it was thick and green just outside the fairways. If you venture past that it has really grown up outside of the cartpaths up to above waist deep--my buddy had two drives outside of the cartpaths where he was barely able to advance the ball 5-10 feet in front of him with a full swing--nasty stuff! Rated 8/10 The greens were super soft! They were a little to slow for my taste but rolled fairly true. To give you an idea how soft they were on #5 we had an extreme front pin--my wedge that I hoisted super high stopped just on the front of the green and actually backed up some on the downslope--he he--normally it would release a good 10-15 feet by the pin. Rated 7.5/10 Was in greenside bunkers on 11 and 18 that were just in perfect shape. Nicely raked beach sand that is thick that you want to really thump. Rated 8.5/10 The tees were just flat out beautiful. Level, lush, green and not too many divots. Most par 3 divots were filled in nicely. Rated 8.5/10. Course is in real good shape right now--recommended.

Played the Blues (6530/71.6/127) with Kevin and Shawna in clear, breezy conditions in the 70's. Rarely do I comment about my playing partners, but I was impressed that Shawna played the Blues with a birdie and numerous pars. Drives 225+, irons on the green from 175+ and she had a great short game! The POP was good, 4H playing on an $18 rate with a cart from teeoff.com twilight. We rarely pushed the group in front of us and the group behind rarely pushed us. Olivas is an excellent layout to walk, very flat with no super long walks in between holes. Excellent golf facilities. Grass driving range complete with a good chipping and sand practice area that they have expanded to include a separate chipping area off to the side of the chipping green. Large putting green that is usually very comparable to the course. The tees were mostly lush, nicely maintained with few unfixed divots. A couple of Blues tees were closed as they were doing maintenance on them. The fairways were fairly lush and firm. The few poor areas were clearly marked as GUR. The rough around the fairway is mostly lush. Farther off the fairway could be hardpan to waist deep or anything in between. You need to know where the real deep stuff is barely off fairways and plan accordingly. The traps were nice to play from, well maintained with good quality sand. The greens were firm, smooth and putted medium speed. They held well struck irons with a little run out. The customer service is always excellent here. Minimal food available onsite. The no frills pro shop is in a trailer. No GPS on carts, usually no drink cart, so plan ahead if you need these items. Overall considering the condition, price and layout, one of the better deals in So Cal IMO. Definitely recommended.

Played 5-15-17 early morning on a Teeoff deal for $25.60 including cart, getting around the course in about 1 1/2 hours. Played the black tees which were very lush and level. Fairways were in great shape, not much roll but very lush with real good lies. Rough is not that long and in good shape. Was in one greenside bunker that had plenty of nice white sand. Greens were in real nice shape,very soft and a little slow but rolling true. The course is just green everywhere and in good shape.

Rode the Blacks (6806/73.0/130) playing 36 holes this afternoon 5/1/17 with my buddy Mack and his buddy Brian. Finished both rounds in 6 hours 5 minutes playing the 1st round in 4 hrs with Mack and Brian and zipped through the second round by myself in 2 hrs 5 minutes with nobody on the course. It was a strange scene at Olivas there was maybe a total of 8-10 groups we saw all day. Just fantastic--like a private CC today. Weather was postcard-maybe 5mph wind at most and low 70 temps. Paid $16.49 on a EZ links 20% promo code. Great staff let me go a little early with my buddy Mack and Brian.

Olivas is getting ready for their City Championships in late May. The fairways were so much lusher and green today then the last time I played it. They are starting to look like the best public course fairways around like they were the last couple of summers. Sprinklers and watering must be going on here cause they were just beautiful. Rated a 8.5/10.

The tees are also SUPER lush, green and level. Most tees looked like PGA tour tees. Rated 9/10.

Was in 2 bunkers over 36 holes--both were well raked and contained damper beach sand. Rated 8/10. Bunkers here are always high quality.

The greens today were the only disappointment--but don't fear only disappointed because they look like they had just been punched maybe a week or so ago. Putts were bobbling. Can't give a fair rating on the greens but if I had to rate them they were close to a 6/10 at current time. Obviously they are in punch mode getting ready for the City Championships in 3 or so weeks. Give them at least a couple weeks to heal.

The rough lining the fairways is in great shape--thicker and lush. Rated 8/10

The fringe areas are very lush with some signs of punching.

If the fairways and tees stay this lush all summer--once the greens heal in a couple of weeks this course is going to be close to a 8.7-9.0 range.

Recommended for sure.

Played the Blacks (6806/73.0/130) with kviser in clear, breezy conditions in the 70's. The POP was excellent, 3.5H. We really moved after initially playing behind a 5some for 5-6 holes once they let us play through on #10. The tees were lush, nicely maintained with few unfixed divots. The fairways were lush and firm. Any few poor areas were clearly marked as GUR. The rough can be quite punitive here. Around the fairway is mostly lush and pretty consistent. However, get barely off the primary rough and you could have weeds, hardpan or waist deep lost ball rough. The traps are almost always well maintained with good quality sand here, nice to play from. The greens were firm, smooth and putted medium fast speed. They held well struck irons well. If you have never played here, you may be very unimpressed initially. The pro shop is a trailer and there is minimal food available onsite. No GPS on carts, usually no drink cart. However, Olivas has excellent golf facilities. Grass driving range complete with an excellent chipping and sand practice area that they have expanded to include a separate chipping area off to the side of the chipping green. Large putting green that is usually very comparable to the course. Great course to walk, flat and no tees are a huge distance from the last green. The wind is usually calm in the morning and a 1-2+ club wind in the afternoon with the ocean closeby. The customer service is always excellent @ Olivas. Definitely recommended.
