Played twilight 5-6-08 at Olivas Links with Nickesquire1, TopRank and ttucker2 to celebrate Olivas Links one year anniversary promotion. Really interesting idea where they allowed us to first play and then decide after our round how much to pay. At first I was hesitant to play the course because of the recent aeration 2 weeks prior but I must say I’m glad I did because they have done a fabulous job with the aeration and these greens are already almost back. Very playable right now.

I really enjoyed the round. My fellow GK’ers were excellent golfing companions and the course layout is a relaxing and challenging walking golf course. Feels good to break away from the monitor, slap the bag on my shoulders and play a fun golf course. The conditions were not great and the fairways certainly still thin but you can tell the turf is just about ready to perk up. In fact, from what I read in previous posts, I’d say the fairways are on the come back right now. Regarding the greens, as I said, already in good shape (although slower than normal) and in another 2 weeks, they should be perfect again.

Olivas Links grows on me with every round. I enjoy the course layout and service here. Always lots of smiles to go around from their staff and the pleasant Ventura temps suit me well.

The fairways have improved somewhat over the past 2 months but are still substandard. The greens are superb, the traps and tees are excellent. They have thinned out or mowed down some of the most punitive areas where the rough was 1-2 ft. high last summer. Then a lost ball was almost a certainty and even if you found it, good luck advancing it. The Pro Shop staff keeps things running on time and are always friendly and courteous.

These greens are still the best of any course I regularly play on, which keeps me coming back. These fairways are still the worst of any course I regularly play on, showing mild improvements on some holes, but ROCK HARD and THIN! If you desire spongy lies, better stay home, because you won't find many from tee to green here.

There was evidence of fertilizer on several fairways, perhaps that + some regular watering will bring them back out? Both the tees and aprons around the greens were in excellent condition as well.

Played Saturday (with bggpoppa). Very surpised on how the fairways have improved. Fairways actually looked decent. Still a long way to go, but least it's not brown! Customer service is always excellent. Mike (starter) always friendly, great way to start the round. Teeboxes were level and nice. Fairways are getting better. Traps were pretty fluffy. Greens are as usual, the best part of this course. They were rolling true. Pinplacements were pretty nice this time around. Challenging but not extremely difficult. It got windy in the back 9 which means the smell was baaad(talk about amen corner!) Overall, course is progressing along. Hopefully in the summer time it will get back in our rotation. Shot one of my best rounds! Hey where's my green jacket?... ha ha ha....

Gotta admit, when I set this tee time up for me and Geraldq18 (btw scrambling like a mad man today) I was really apprehensive. All the reviews and what I had witnessed a few months ago made me regret booking a time. But when we got there and stepped onto #1 we were pleasantly surprised on how the grass was growing on on the fairways on the Front 9. Don't get me wrong they weren't awesome, but they were 10x better than a few months ago.

The back 9 hasn't caught up to the front but at least you can see green!! The greens are freaking in great shape; fast, hard, and rolling true.. If the course continues to improve over the next month or so, I think you will be happy you played here..

The greens are fantastic. The fairways on the other hand need a lot of work. Rock hard and most of the grass was very thin with many bare spots.

I have heard a lot of good things from people about this course, but I don't think any of them have played this course in a while. I asked the woman at the make-shift clubhouse what condition the course was in and she replied that it was in great shape. A local behind me replied "the fairways are in crap condition"! He said that they planted the wrong kind of grass and were still waiting for it to grow in or something to that effect. He also told me they raised the rates. I appreciated the honesty and proceeded to play my round.

The greens were in great condition and rolled very true, but the fairway were in horrible condition. Clumpy, Brown and Hard. I probably averaged about 75 yds of roll off of my drives. Normally I would be happy with that kind of distance, but when I kept rolling into hazards because of it, it did not make for a great round. All in all, I would wait until the fairway grass grows in before playing this course. I would play this course again due to it beautiful layout, but it may be late summer before I go out there again.

Played this week and I knew I was in trouble after hitting it 290 down the middle of the fairway of #1 and its all brown with lots of divots. Not any grass to pick that ball cleanly. VERY thin lies and very difficult to chip or get spin. Its a nice track to walk and great people working there. Give it till june so the fairways can recover, thats my recommendation.

First of all I hate to make excuses..but after our round saturday I had to piggyback some more on a previous post from Ricogo regarding Olivas Links..

Our group tried to play twilight on Sat 3/22. should have known to turn around when marshall stated on #1 tee..its slow today boys...
I look down on #1 and realized that I left my sand wedge on the previous course that I played(wo-hoo)..big mistake to leave that club on a day like today. Couple that with another day of 20mph winds, greens rock hard cause of the gusty winds, a 10-15 minute wait every tee box(teed off 1:10pm , finished at 6:30pm, drunk group behind us, distractions within our own group and once again no grass on the fairways and this one was a round to remember.

Now to the specifics.... I am debating whether to come back and play Olivas if they cannot start putting some grass on the fairways(that's my rant/beef and to be frankly honest others too that I have heard),

I hit fairways on #1, #4,#6,#7,#9,#10,#12,#14,#16,#18, drove it through the fairway on #15 and nothing to show for. Had drives of 325 on #9 and 355 on #10 came away with bogies not being able to even get underneath balls with simple 1st grade chips.....Its time for managment to either lower the rates or put some grass on the fairways...its not fair to your customers..Even the marshall that greeted us stated that the mens club plays lift clean and try to find some fairway to place your ball on. You are losing a regular customer here who loves this course, layout and friendly staff due to the current conditions of the fairways...its time to make a change.
