Played Saturday noon-ish on a golfnow deal.

I try to keep my emotions out of reviews but when a round takes 5hrs 35minutes and there isn't a Marshall in sight (except one that sits on the par 3 #8 trying to get you to pay for prize money) it's difficult to do so. The problem I've found most with this course is the inconsistency in speed of play. Some days is 4.5hours some 5.5hours. Half the time they'll be having problems at the starter - his list will differ from the computer so they'll end up sending groups off every 4-6 minutes. 5.5+ hour round just takes the enjoyment out of the game.

Everything else was what you expect here. Reasonable tee boxes, lush and green albeit long fairway grass, mostly hard pan/dirt rough. Pretty good medium speed greens.

I would rate this track around 6.5 and is worth playing Tee'd off at 7:34 on Sunday 5/8. I practically had the whole place to myself. Course was in some decent shape. #1 is a great starting hole and is in great condition. the rest of the course is very playable, with some holes having a good amount of fairway in landing areas, marked GUR. Sometimes there were good 15x30y sections (especially #2) of new turf laid down in those areas. Most of the fairways though are well covered and fairly lush, perhaps could even use a mowing on some holes. tight lies to be had the further away from the fairways and in areas you shouldn't be. Wasn't in much sand today, but the bunker I was in was pretty thick from the previous days rain, or the moisture from the morning. The greens were rolling pretty quick, and very receptive to iron shots. I think they could be/should be cut and rolled, but I do not know much about course maintenance. overall I had a very good/fun time. I finished my round around 10:30 and played a replay but only 9. I would recommend playing here and I probably will this coming weekend...

Played here yesterday, 2/16/16. Got a great deal with golf now. $25 including cart with a 12:14 tee time. I thought the course was good for that price. The drought has played its toll, but it was lush is some areas. Mixture of different grass on the tee boxes true, but come on, are we really worried about the tee boxes? Stick a tee in your pie, and shut it! Traps were well maintained. Rough was thicker in parts, but overall good. Greens were in good shape. Fairways were good as well, with some patchy areas for sure, but not horrible by any means. We're in a drought people, and El Niño is looking like my little cousin El Sid, who we play lego's with at Christmas time. I wouldn't want to pay over $40 to play this course, but $30 and under is fine. Hell, you'll pay close to that for 18 at Golf n stuff, so get your head out of the windmill. Overall, I felt for the price and conditions, it was a solid good experience. Oh, grabbed some grub too from the grill. Recommend the chicken Caesar wrap. Good stuff. Bathrooms were better too than my last trip. Golf on fellas!

The conditions at Sterling continues the downslide. But at some of the deeply discounted rates on-line it makes it more palatable. Kind of Wal-Mart golf is what I guess they are after.

Played 12-9-15 afternoon as a threesome, playing in about 4 1/2 hours waiting on every shot. Tee boxes were a mix of semi-lush and thin, and had to search for a level spot on a lot of the boxes. Fairways are a mess. Between the different types of grass, some thin, some long, and some dormient all of which are very over watered, you never had a descent lie in the fairway, with most of the time hitting from a soggy area with mud on your ball. 12th and 13th fairways were roped off for seeding, which they were last time I played here in May. Rough is very thin with a lot of dirt the farther you get from the fairway. Sandtraps looked to be in descent shape. Greens were very soft rolling medium speed and showing a lot of footprints. I just dont think they know how to take care of a golf course here. I like this course but I just don't see myself playing here anymore until they figure out how to keep it in good shape.

Got out Sunday 11/15 at 8:56 as a 3-some. Haven't played Sterling in a while, I'd have to say it was nice to be back. Service in the pro shop was great...checked us in and gave us free range balls. The walking rate was $59, I'm not sure if that's the same as with a cart. The range was hitting off of the grass, which is nice. POP was about 4:30. I walked, and it is a moderately difficult walking course, mostly due to some up and down, and the distance between holes 9 and 10. As usual, the greens are the highlight of this course. Just beautiful right now, running about 10.5 on the stimp and smooth. Very receptive to any good approach shot. Very few ball marks and held the lines beautifully. Fairways have always been my issue with Sterling Hills. They always over-water the fairways, and yesterday was a bit better...but still too wet in many areas. Earlier in the morning is even worse. They have over seeded a couple of fairways on the back, and were cart path only. For the most part, coverage was good and the ball sat up nicely. Some GUR that wasn't marked, but with the wet fairways, I normally play ball in paw here. We got rained on as well, so we definitely went to lift clean and place after that. The rough is spotty, about 1-3 inches in length. Decent coverage most areas, but you can end up with some tough lies. Keep it in the fairways! I know, easier said than done. They have done some major turf reduction, but mostly in areas we shouldn't be playing from anyway. I wasn't in any traps, but my partners didn't find much sand in them. Was more like hardpacked dirt in many of them. Happy I wasn't in there. The tee boxes were pretty decent. Good coverage, and mostly level. I really like the layout, and the greens make me want to go back again very soon. I just missed many a birdie putt, and I want my revenge! I'll make my tee times after 8:30 here, allowing the fairways to dry up a bit. I'm putting Sterling Hills back in the rotation.

I stopped here with two others on Wednesday October 28 at 7:30am without a tee time and the starter got us right out. The course was not busy at all for some reason and it was in very nice shape. There are some very difficult holes here but if you can keep your ball in play it isn't too bad. The greens were soft and rolled true without many ball marks, tee boxes were level, and the fairways were nice. The only downfall is their use of water. They have let most of the course brown except the fairways so if you miss the fairway you are in the hardpan. The fairways and greens are then overwatered and we found standing water in a number of different places including the greens. A fun course at a great rate and in nice shape other than what I mentioned above.

Tee boxes are the worst part of this course right now. Many many unlevel areas mixed with long grass. The tee placements made it worse today as they all seem to be located in the worst areas. Many of the tees I had to back up two club lengths to get any sort of level footing. They need to level these badly.

Fairways are starting to show the temperature increases and dryness. There are several areas that are starting to brown out. The good thing is they seem to be be focusing their watering on the areas you should be playing from so it didn't effect me much. Expect 150 yards off the tee boxes to get browner and browner as the summer goes on.

Rough is equally taking a beating but the fairways are pretty wide here so the rough isn't that tough to avoid.

Green complexes were generally very good. Thick rough, decent sand, and well sped greens that roll and hold shots well.

Sterling Hills is starting to get into the grey area of over charging based on course conditions. I still love this course but if the quality of the course goes further down they won't be seeing my money unless they drop their fee's 10%.
