What a humbling day today. These ultra firm greens are hard to hold a wedge and very difficult to putt on. Anytime you have quick greens with too much po auna in them putting becomes very difficult. A slight deviation of the putter face at impact will cause the ball to slide around and deviate greatly once the ball nears the end of its roll. In the afternoon these greens even became crusty. They really need to soften these up. Front pins are nearly impossible to hit close. The scenery of the surrounding hills is wonderful. The layout allows for some really neat holes. However, I will not play here again unless they make the greens more playable for approaches and for a better roll of the golf ball. The course is much tougher than what the rating and slope indicate due to the greens.

Went out with several buddies and thought it was another one of those overpriced public courses but turned out to be proven wrong. For 75$ and free replay on a Friday, it was absolutely worth it. The greens and fairways were in excellent shape and the surrounding scenery was breathtaking. Won't hesitate to return very soon.

Played on Sunday, 2/20 as part of a tournament. It took us just over 5 hours to play 18. We played here just after a day or so of rain. Weather was clear and sunny the day we played. Course is in great shape. There is good coverage on the fairways. Fairways here is one of the best I've seen for this time of the year. Yes there were some mushy spots on the fairways but it still playable.

The greens were in great shape. Thought with the rain the night before that they would be slow. But it was the opposite. The balls on the greens rolled a little fast. Tee boxes were in good shape too. With the recent rains the day before, it was cart path only when we played. Can't comment on the sand in the bunkers, since I did not hit any balls into them.

This is a hilly course to play. Loved the views of the mountain/valley from the course. Water does come into play on a few holes. Front nine is a little more hilly than the back nine. There were a few carries on the front nine. Accuracy is key to scoring low here. If you really slice or hook some of your tee shots, your ball is into the canyon. We were fortunate that it wasn't windy when we played.

It's not cheap to play here so it wasn't overly crowded. It was nice that there were GPS in the golf carts. They have a nice clubhouse if you want to eat here after your round.

So if you plan to play it, play early as the difficulty and tight fairways of the course are likely to contribute very long rounds as the day goes on. But I enjoyed the layout and the challenge and thought the value was reasonable. Will definitely play it again.

Played here on Friday, 11/12/10. The weather showed around 15-20mph winds and that is not what this course needs. The front nine is on top of a mountain with many blind tee shots but the back 9 is very traditional with incredible greens all around. The course has very narrow fairways and several bends. I would compare this to Angeles National, Lost Canyons, Robinson Ranch, and Rustic Canyon. Using a 3rd party site I was able to get a tee time for cheap, like $51. Unfortunately I got paired with two bozo's who spent more time looking for golf balls than actually playing, making for a very frustrating round. Had it not been for them and the weather I'd give this a 9/10 but minus one for each and it is 7/10. I'd play Rustic Canyon before coming back here but it was good to get Tierra under my belt. After all, it was only a practice round for an Arizona trip in a week.

Played at the crack of dawn, or should I say crack in the fog. 6.45am. Gorgeous morning. Standing on the first green, high up over the simi valley and the I-23, above a layer of fog with the golden and blue sky above, punctured by white plane trials, it was almost perfect.

Worth $10 to just stand there and feel free.

I hadn't been out here for a couple of years, preferring to make my way to Rustic Canyon - which you can see from some of the front nine tee boxes - but it seems to have really improved in terms of maintainence and grooming. It feels like a quality track now.
The course is in great shape, particularly the greens, given these times of punching and seeding. There's a couple of wicked false fronts - notably number 10, but the greens are holding nicely and putting very very true.
It's a course that deserves more kudos - yes, it's quirky but it makes you think, then think again and play yardage shots - not just blast away. Isn't that what golf is?
They also do $50 play all day on Tuesdays which is a steal if you're up for 36.
Can't wait to go back.

Tough but fair seems to be the consensus if you read the reviews on here. I'd submit to that also - EXCEPT if you are playing for your handicap. I'm an honest and fair 7 and the front nine here was probably the hardest set of holes I have encountered in the wider area. By the time you have done with them you have chomped through 3500+ yards of this Moorpark hillside so you are on track for a 7+K course from the blues - the back nine is much shorter and more forgiving. Having shot 90 plus for the first time in a long while I might vent:). So here goes:

6 of the first nine are forced carries (some significant) the only exception (other than par threes) being #1. There is one totally blind monster tee ball (#3). There are no bailouts anywhere save for 1 & 9 tee balls where you can miss on the opposing fairway - 1 for 9, 9 for 1). 2 of them are tee balls off a cliff to narrow strips of fairway well over 100 feet below that you can only guess the effective yardage at (#8, 9) and all this in a naturally windy area. Bring your A game (and plenty of extra balls). Play a lot of holes conservatively for bogey and don't worry about length - just get it in play - and you will be happier than the double pars you will make otherwise. Bogey feels like par here and par like birdie so do what you can to minimize mistakes.

Back nine somewhat more conventional and most of it plays back and forth across the "gentler" rolling terrain near the road (only a few holes are played through the hillside/barranca junk. Nevertheless, tee ball is everything throughout this course and when you have a 30 yard wide fairway (I am being generous) and it all pitches to one side then your effective landing area is 10 yards or so. Not fun!

Don't get me wrong - I think it's an honest golf course. Just that somebody at USGA is smoking crack if they think this plays a couple of ticks easier than flat, monotonous, no-hazard, wide-open-and-predictable Brookside 1 from the blues. No way.

No doubt local knowledge will help (as would visuals on the GPS - not just the plain old yardages).

Greens were awesome, running average speed (nothing too speedy) but very true - a joy to lag on as you can trust distance and line and feel confident about 2 putts throughout.

A few burnt out areas especially in the rough that make it especially gnarly and difficult to recover from.

Played all day tuesday (all you can eat) for 50 bucks. Not sure I'd pay the rack rate (given the golf ball dividend you will have to suffer) but for a special rate it's worth it.

Just maintain your sense of humor....:)
