Golf Course Reviews: California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Utah, Florida, Hawaii!Played on 11/21. It's such a shame that this once great track has deteriorated to the point I don't want to play it anymore. Many areas of the course (especially off the fairways) are simply garbage. Yes. the drought has caused some of this, but the other L.A. city courses seem to be fairing much better. One thing I do know is that Rancho does not used reclaimed water. I'm not sure why the city cannot find a way to do this. When I commented to someone on the staff about the conditions, the excuse was, "oh, this course gets a lot of play". Sorry, but a lot of play does not create horrible areas. The city really needs to bring in someone to fix these problems. They should take the extra money they charge for a "premium" course, and fix it up. But then, Rancho is a cash cow for the city. As long as people keep playing it, they really don't care. Very sad.
Played here on 4/23 for the first time in a few years. Thanks to GreensKeeper, I knew the greens had been punched, so I’ll leave out any mention of them. Overall, the course was in pretty decent shape. Tee boxes level for the most part, with a few unrepaired divots. My only issue was the condition of the course off of the fairways. It was really hit or miss. A couple of the lies I had we absolutely awful. Either scrappy, uneven Kikuyu, or hard-pan. I found it interesting that I saw several areas of the course that were beautiful lush grass. Unfortunately, some were areas that even the worst golfer would never be. It would be nice if they put less effort into those areas, and concentrate on the playable part of the course.
Played here today. Greens have been punched with small holes. No sand, though. Give it a few days.
Played on Memorial Day weekend. I love this place! Tee to green in excellent shape. Greens a little on the slow side, but pretty true. I've never been disappointed playing here. Highly recommended.
Played here in a small outing of 21 player on 3/9. I haven't been here in a number of years, and was looking forward to it. I was extremely disappointed! The greens were horrible. Putts rarely held the line, being very bumpy and slow. Areas of the fairways had brown, patchy grass, which played OK, but I was used to the lushness of this course. Not this time. The Lakes course was better, but not much. I won't be back until I hear they've improved conditions.
Played today 3/5. This was my first time here. Played with a friend who won a foursome in a tournament. For the most part, this course is great. Great condition, with greens that are fast and true. Fairways were perfect. Rough was medium length, but not too penal. Tee boxes were level, and in great shape – even the par three’s. Fantastic practice facility. I really only had one complaint, and maybe because it was my first time playing here – hole 14. What an absolutely crazy hole! Total target golf. If you don’t hit your shots in the right place, you’re screwed! I was happy to come away with double-bogey. If you get a chance to play here, do it! Hopefully, I’ll get another crack at it.
Played today - 2/15 in a tournament. I only get out here a couple of times a year, and I was really excited to play it. Unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed. The greens had been punched (with small holes), and were very bumpy. It was really difficult to judge speed under these conditions. The bunkers (I use that term lightly) are actually dirt pits. I was only in two of them, but the lies were a joke. C’mon guys, put sand in them, or call them ground under repair. I know we’re in a drought, so I can understand the condition of the grass. Not bad, but playable. An incident that happened, I have to mention. While we were teeing off on the first hole, the first group of our tournament was walking up to the green. There was a groundskeeper that started watering the green, and kept watering the green while they were putting out. When I reached my ball, he was still there, with his hose stretched over the green, still watering. I raised my arms as if to say “what are you doing?” He motioned to me to hit my approach shot. Seriously? He was right in front of the pin – still watering – and not moving. I found out after the round, that some other groups had to deal with the same problem. Sorry for the rant, but I see this happen too often. I realize these guys are not being paid a lot of money, but management needs to be informed. So I did. I hope Soule Park gets back to the glory it once had. I truly love this course.
Haven't played here in quite a few years. Course conditions were actually pretty good, considering not much rain this winter season. The greens were in excellent shape. I just don't play here enough to figure out the speed and breaks. My only complaint was pace of play - 6 hours. I saw a marshal a few times throughout the day - doing absolutely nothing. But I can't really blame him, per se. It's just typical American Golf packing in as many tee times as they can get. 5-somes and all. If you can deal with the slow play, this is actually a great place to check out.
Played in a tournament on 5/11. I haven't been here in several years, as the last time I played it, conditions were horrible. I was pleasantly surprised this time, though. Overall, the course was fairly lush. There were some areas of ground under repair, but nowhere near what it used to be. Tee boxes and fairways were a little too lush, and needed to be cut. I didn't get much roll on tee shots. Rough was about 3 inches, and rather punishing at times. I was only in bunkers twice. Both times, the sand was fairly heavy. The bunkers would actually be fine if they ware raked better. All of the bunkers I looked at, looked like they hadn't been maintained by the staff, along with some really poor rake jobs by golfers. The greens were actually in very good shape, with very few ball marks. They were running at about an 8 - a little too slow for my taste, so it took a few holes to get used to the speed. My only complaint was that virtually every hole was mounded. Anything other than a firm dead-center putt dove left or right. I probably lost a few strokes because of it. Pace of play was amazing for a Saturday morning - 4:20. Overall, a great day.
Played 4/26/13 with JohnnyGK, Longball23 and Kviser. Fantastic weather! Pace of play was great, especially on the 2nd nine. Moorpark is always such a great place to play. Staff is friendly and helpful, and a great practice facility. We played Creekside/Ridgeline – a combo not the faint of heart. The course was in really great shape, coming out of the winter. Fairways were a little tight, but lush enough to hit good shots. Rough was about 3 inches, and not too penal. The tee boxes are always nice and level here. For the most part in pretty good shape. I wasn’t in any bunkers today, but they looked pretty good. I didn’t hear any complaints from my playing partners, though. Now for the greens: since we played later in the afternoon, footprints were definitely an issue. I’ve played here quite a bit, and the greens are typically fast. Today they looked fast, but were not. For the most part, in pretty good shape, though. All in all a fantastic day of golf. I hope to be back soon!
My first time here in four years. I was hoping that since they raised the geen fees 20% a few years ago for this "premier" course it woulb be in great shape. It was not, at all. Greens were bumpy, lot's of really scrappy lies in both the fairways and rough. Our tee time was at 9:36. We didn't tee off until 9:56. It was a five-plus hour round - on a weekday! We saw the problem when we reached the 16th tee box. The was a foursome two groups ahead of us, on the 16th green. We could see that the group in front of them was approaching the 18th green - two holes behind! I asked that starter if there were marshalls, and he said they don't have them on weekdays anymore - budget cutbacks. Someone needs to look into the total mismanagement of the L.A. City courses. Someone needs to be fired. Let's start with the idiots who decided to jack up the green fees. Oh wait - they're government people. Lack of intelligence - required!
Played on 11/23. The course was in pretty good shape. Greens were rolling quite well. I had a pretty amazing day with 23 putts! Fairways were firm and fast - not too many bare spots. The only problem I have with this course is that they still continue to put out 5-somes. Can make for a 5+ hour round on the weekends. Overall, a great place to play.
