Just up the road from Wood Ranch I teed off here at 4PM and the heat and lateness kept most of the people away, so another beautiful 2-hour round. Course was in good private course shape all around. Greens were fast but reasonable. Not a long course but a solid challenge. There are some open holes but many of them play through chutes of trees. Lots of twists and turns and hills to keep you on your toes. Well worth your time.

As you know I book a lot of private golf course Monday events working only with clubs that appreciate hosting our group, do an excellent job running our event and treat us friendly. Sunset Hills Country Club leads the way in the friendly category. Their staff goes beyond in making our group feel welcome along with providing full F & B services prior, during and after play.

Monday, 7/27 was another great event with excellent courses conditions and super service.

An interesting aspect of the course is although it was a very hot day, every hole provides escapes from the heat with shade. It made a difference.

Thank you everyone that came out to play. I got to catch-up with a bunch of Greenskeeper.org members I had not seen in a long time. It’s very difficult for me to put on our GK Plays right now because of how booked/expensive weekend golf has become. Running events and seeing GKers is my favorite part of Greenskeeper.org so if you happen to have a Monday free to play, come out to one these Vivid Golf/Golf Moose/GK events…it means a lot to me :)

Lucky enough to get to spend another day with the GK/Vivid team this time at Sunset Hills CC in Moorpark. I had never played this course before so I was super excited to get to tee it up from the black tees with my old friends Kevin (kviser) and Andrew (ag2000), along with my buddy Brad. We were also very fortunate to get to play the course in its proper sequence as we were team 1A so it was 1-18 in this shotgun start.

In terms of layout, the front nine is incredibly fun with some gorgeous holes and a fun but not incredibly daunting routing. It's not a long course by any means so it gives you lots of chances to score. The course's main defense is its narrow chutes and landing areas, some blind shots and very fast greens. The back nine is a little more wild with some quirky holes that feel quite alien to the front nine, but it rounds out nicely the last three holes and the finishing hole is a fun one to end your day.

Course conditions? Pretty darn immaculate. Some of the early holes feel like you're up in the mountains just surrounded by lush greenery and such pleasant scenery all around. The golf is almost secondary! But yes, the fairways were just an absolute pleasure to play, and the rough got really grabby and thick in most areas - avoid at all costs! I played out of two bunkers and the sand was very nice and easy to hit from, while all the tee boxes were in good condition.

The greens were really terrific as well ... nothing gimmicky or over the top, but you're definitely going to find some solid breaks and multiple tiers to challenge you on many of them. Others can be quite small and well guarded by bunkers. But once you're on, putting adventures take center stage and you will be rewarded with confident lines, fast speeds and surfaces that are surprisingly good at holding well-struck pitches and chips. In a word - fabulous.

The warmup facilities were modest at best - only part that was open was about three or four stalls at a max distance of 150 yards, but the putting areas were very good. We had cart service come by multiple times so that was great, and other facilities were very well appointed and taken care of - clearly they go out of their way to make this place as good as it can be. And it shows.

Really enjoyed my afternoon at Sunset Hills and very happy to knock off another great local course off the list. Won't think twice if I ever get the opportunity to play here again.

Good times yesterday at the GK/GolfMoose/Vivid event. Sunset Hills is a beautiful and well maintained private course. Great customer service from the many staff members. The course was very lush and the greens were in great shape. The fairways and rough were mostly a thick mat of kikuyu. It can be tough to find your ball in some of the heavier areas of rough and even tougher to advance it so hitting the fairway is a plus. Pace of play for our group was 4:40 without too much waiting between shots. I found the course to be very challenging and fun. I would play here again.

Rode the blacks today 7/27/26 under hot conditions around 90 degrees with maybe a 5mph wind joined by buddies John, Matt and Matt. Pop was just a tick under 5 hours with about 90-100 players for the Golfmoose event. Staff treated us well. Bar open, cartgirl making her rounds. Only drawback to their practice area is short irons only. Otherwise beautiful 2 putting greens. Conditions were very lush out there today! Kikuya lush Fairways that were thick and if u come in too steep on these beauties it could be chunk city. Many fairways here are narrow. Rating these beauties a 8.5/10 Rough was lush Kikuya and even though I had a great chipping day the rough greenside is super lush, nasty. Rated 8.5/10 Tees were mostly level and were lush and nicely padded. 8/10 Was only in one bunker greenside #4 that looked wet and packed on the top surface but had plenty of sand underneath. Rated 7.5/10 The greens were very pure and seemed to look fast to the naked eye but were actually very soft and maybe rolling a 10 on the stimp. They are doing a great job watering them with this heat. Rated 8/10. Sunset Hills presents small to midsized fairways off the tee with approach shots into smaller greens. Accuracy and ball positioning in the fairway is better than bombing it up greenside on some of the shorter par 4s Our group thought the conditions were great. Thx Johnny, Golfmoose and Sunset Hills for a great day.

Played 3-23-26 in the GK/Vivid outing, 10am shotgun finishing in under 4 1/2 hours with a smaller than normal field. Tee boxes had good coverage and level stances. Fairways were lush with nice lays and minimal roll out. Rough was in great shape, thick and lush, about 2 inches longer than fairways with some thicker areas around greens. Was in one greenside bunker that was well groomed with a good layer of soft white sand. Greens were in great shape, rolling smooth and pure at a medium/fast pace and very receptive. Always fun to play here. Recommended.

I have more events at Sunset Hills CC than other courses despite Sunset Hills CC’s lack of full distance driving range because the course is always in great shape, Sunset Hills provides us their full F & B services of Bar/Restaurant/Snack Bar/Beverage Cart hours prior to play, during & after play (no extra costs) and they have a wonderful staff with great attitudes always making us feel good/appreciated.

Check out the beautiful photos I just posted.

Rode the blues this morning in group 1b with buddies John, Ron and Mark in 4 hours 15 minutes under perfect golf weather high 70s with very little wind. 81 player event that moved nicely as we never had to wait on one shot.

This is the nicest I have seen the course.

Very lush thick kikuya fairways that were a joy to hit from. Perfect lies all day. Fairways 9/10

Rough was also thick and lush and probably 4-6 inches in most places. Rated 9/10

Was only in one greenside bunker left on 3 that was raked perfectly and in great shape. Rated 8/10

Tees were all very lush and mainly level. Rated 8.5/10

Greens here are very small on some holes like 1 and 14 and are larger on other holes. They were very receptive and rolling like pure glass. Fairly quick maybe an 11 on the stimp. You can tell they really take pride in their greens here.

The more I play here I enjoy the layout. First two holes are strong dogleg to the left while holes 3 and 13 dogleg to the right. Most holes are narrow here which I enjoy and gives you a nice line to aim ond concentrate on. Like most courses staying below the pins here provide ample scoring opportunities. Get on the wrong side of these green complexes and your chipping skills will be put to the test. The kikuya fringes surrounding the greens grab bump and run chips so most times you do need to fly chips to the green.

Recommended.

Have you ever had the perfect combination of lush/fast/smooth/soft greens?

That’s what we got to experience on Monday 12/8 at Sunset Hills CC to go along with beautifully manicured lush course. I booked 3 events at Sunset Hills CC in 2025 and I’m booking three more for 2026. From a golf organizer’s perspective, the only negative about the facilities is its lack of a full driving range instead of its small, short irons only hitting station. But Sunset Hills CC short immaculately kept challenging regulation course, exceptional staff, fun bar/restaurant more than make up for it.

This is a family fun club with ZERO snobby-ness. So welcoming of our group I had a couple Sunset Hills CC members come up to our Vivid Golf Check-In tent to say hi and ask about our events.

It was a great day playing with rgm2525, GDR23 and barkydog1. Make sure you read their detailed reviews and check out the photos posted.

Also if you’re looking for a place to host your group event or interested in a membership, reach out to the contacts our Sunset Hills CC Greenskeeper.org page :)
