Played Saturday morning 7/25 at 9am. POP was a 4.5 hours. Warm sunny day about 80 degrees.

Tee boxes are the worst part of this course right now. Many many unlevel areas mixed with long grass. The tee placements made it worse today as they all seem to be located in the worst areas. Many of the tees I had to back up two club lengths to get any sort of level footing. They need to level these badly.

Fairways are starting to show the temperature increases and dryness. There are several areas that are starting to brown out. The good thing is they seem to be be focusing their watering on the areas you should be playing from so it didn't effect me much. Expect 150 yards off the tee boxes to get browner and browner as the summer goes on.

Rough is equally taking a beating but the fairways are pretty wide here so the rough isn't that tough to avoid.

Green complexes were generally very good. Thick rough, decent sand, and well sped greens that roll and hold shots well.

Sterling Hills is starting to get into the grey area of over charging based on course conditions. I still love this course but if the quality of the course goes further down they won't be seeing my money unless they drop their fee's 10%.

Another 5hr 15min round at Knollwood.

Had a 815am tee time on July 3rd. Got off nearly on time. Joined a threesome as a single. Played from the blues. Tee boxes all day were pretty good. Some uneven lies but not too bad. Decent coverage but a lot of unrepaired divots.

Fairways were what you would expect in the drought stricken and hot Granada Hills area. Very firm but weren't generally too penalizing. From green to brown. Mostly good coverage. Certainly playable. The rough is all over the place in terms of length and lushness. Some areas hard pan dirt. Other areas cut short and thin. And other areas very long and incredibly thick. They are also in the process of removing grass and laying mulch in several large areas which is nice to see.

Greens complexes where hit and miss. Areas around the greens were similar to the rough - inconsistent lies. Thick and long, short and thin, hard pan, etc. traps were excellent and difficult, very soft powdery sand. The greens rolled pretty smooth and medium fast but were littered with unrepaired ball marks and badly healed ball marks. They really need to reseed some of the greens. I always struggle with my approach shots at this course because of the tight lies and many of the greens are raised up from the fairway.

I like the layout at Knollwood but the pace of play is just always an issue. I just can't see myself wanting to come back with so many other options.

Played Sunday 6/14 with a 10am tee time. Pace was just ok at 4:45 but we were stuck behind a senior foursome no one in front of them. Probably would have been a 4:15 round.

Olivas is in absolutely prime condition right now. I don't know if it's because of the city championship but you will not find better public fairways in Los Angeles period. They are lush, soft, moist, with near 100% coverage. They seem to be using a significant amount of water right now. Even the lake off 18 is full of water.

The rough is similar to how it normally is. A mix of short and medium long grass with 75% coverage. Greens were medium to medium fast but sot enough to hold long iron shots. Tee boxes were great and mowed very short.

This course is always in very good condition but it's top notch right now. Get out there and play.

Played on Sunday afternoon with a 1230 tee time. Joined a single and a twosome. Got off about 10 minutes late but wasn't a big deal. Heard from the starter we were behind two tournaments but he said we should expect a 4:45 round. Well the tournaments weren't the problem. It was the three groups in front of us playing at a snails pace. Each group had a full hole in between the next leading to a 5:30 round with no cart girl after hole 5. Also absent was any Marshall after hole 11. This wasn't a jam packed course with no way to speed it up. This was obvious slow play by a few groups with no sheriff on duty. Sterling Hills, if you are going to charge top dollar then do what River Ridge does and patrol your course!

Conditions were the same as a few weeks ago. Even and level tee boxes, lush and slightly long fairway grass. They are slowly transitioning the type of grass in the fairways and you'll find all the new lush stuff in the drive landing areas. Great stuff - so easy to take divots.

The greens were what I would call spectacular today. Other than some unrepaired ball marks they are rolling true, mowed tight, and give just enough bounce with irons to keep you honest. The speed was medium and not any faster. Perfect in my opinion.

Had a 930am tee time on a Saturday morning. Got off right on time and the pace of play started off very quickly but slowed significantly the back nine. Still finished in a very welcome 4.5 hours. Considering these LA courses are notorious for being slow I was pleasantly surprised at the pace. It could have easily been a sub four hour round but the slowdown seemed to be because of the several holes with temporary tee boxes. About five holes are playing significantly shorter as they are working on the tee boxes. You'll find two holes that are turned into 240 yard par fours. I didn't mind having to play forward but the tee areas they chose and the maintainance in those areas was horrible. Atrocious and uneven lies and no attempt to more the grass short. And speaking of tee boxes - the regular tee boxes are by far the worst part of of this course. So many are crowned with uneven lies all over the place and inconstancy in the mow height.

The fairways where a pleasant surprise in this drought. Many where quite lush and I can't remember landing in any hard pan areas. The lushness of the fairways seemed be different hole to hole but we're good for this muni throughout. The rough was mowed short and in decent shape. As with these two courses and other Munis in LA you will find some random pot holes in the rough that give a truly unfair lie.

The greens are healing nicely from the punching and I would expect them to be fully healed within a week. I was sad to see a barrage of in repaired ball marks on some of the greens. Come on folks! Don't be lazy.

They are still finishing up installing some of the new cart paths but it seems like they should be done soon. The areas around the new cart paths have not been seeded so they are still hate dirt.

Overall a pleasant day at this course. My opinion of this place differs round to round but I'll be back.

Played this Mother's Day Sunday, 5/10 11am from the Blues. Great deal this Sunday for $32 w/cart. Not many people out on this holiday so our foursome was able to play in about 4 hours flat. Tee boxes are for the most part level, lush, with some areas needing to be mowed tighter but was never much of a problem. The fairways have really come along since the fall and are mostly lush and soft. Some areas of repair but few if any sections roped off. The only negative about the fairways is there seems to be some inconsistency in height. Sometimes it will be almost the length of short rough which can severely penalize a great drive. But if the longer grass keeps the fairways lush then I'm find with it. Rough is probably 50% lush and cut short - not very penalizing. They do take care to keep the rough around the greens very lush and slightly longer which is very much appreciated. Greens are medium fast and plenty soft to hold shots well. Not many ball marks. Sand seems better than I remember, I don't know if they added some or just loosened but it was totally acceptable.

There GPS systems are functional but no longer show birds eye views of the hole. Apparently the GPS company they bought the equipment from is trying to charge them extra. I believe this also happened to River Ridge. However, the GPS does work but only gives yardages.

Gone are the days during the winter of finding a deal on weekend mornings here. I could often walk on as a single for 45-50 bucks at peak times but now you won't find a deal before 11am. $67 is the rule. I would play this course 3 times a month if they'd open some deals for singles but as it stands once a month it is at that price. Too bad. I love this course.

Played Presidents Day morning playing Canyon Crest and Creekside (I think). As normal, the conditions are fantastic for a semi-private course and well worth the $70 greens fees. Tee boxes were level and mowed short (with a few exceptions), fairways were lush and soft with full coverage, and the rough was about 2 inches with great coverage. Greens were fast but held shots well. A decent amount of unrepaired ball marks can be found which from my experience is common at this course. I repaired at least 3 on every hole. The greens can be very tricky to read and can easily lead to 3 putts if not careful.

The fairways at Moorpark are decently wide but beware - if you're not hitting your driver well expect a high score. The native surroundings will gobble up your ball.

Hole variety here is great with each hole having a different look. Pace of play was fantastic, very little waiting.

If you enjoy this type of course $70 is a very fair price.

Due to proximity to my house, Knollwood is the course I play most often. I genuinely like the course and think it has the best layout and hole variation of any public course in the LA and Ventura.

If you weren't aware they are updating the bunkers throughout the course. As of 1/19 they are still finishing off some of the bunkers on the back 9. I would assume they would be all done within a month. It will probably take until late spring for everything to heal up. They've removed some traps added new ones and replaced the sand in all the traps. The new sand is nice and soft and fluffy and really makes the course looks so much better.

They are also attempting to introduce a pace of play mandate of 4.5 hours. I've played here two times in the last few weeks and it's hit or miss. A few weeks ago people genuinely seemed intent on meeting that and we finished in about 4.25 hours. This last Sunday was a different story. A group of 4 foursomes had tee times from 8-9am and they really killed the pace. They were all pretty bad, which is fine, but they were slow. We were a few groups behind them and this led to a 5.5 hour round.

As for the rest of the course conditions, well the course has seen better days. The fairways are pretty much the same as the last year - hard, spotty. But the greens seem worse than I remember last summer. Bouncy, lots of ball marks, really tough day on the greens.

Knollwood still has the best rates - max $50 with cart. Go play but get there early.

I'd like to give another review of this course as a follow up to my review from several months ago. At that time the course was in a state of disrepair - or repair if you want to call it that.

I happy to say the course is really coming around now and it will be back into my rotation. Most of the issues that were going on previously are no longer there. The fairways are all mowed short and are in great shapes. You'll find a bare spot here and there but most of it is nice and lush and soft! They still have many areas roped off but it's playable. No more picking up and replacing ball on every shot. The fairways are great. The greens were also rolling really nice and the rough, well, this is closest thing to rough you'll find at a public LA course.

There's a few things still in need of some attention. The tee boxes are still pretty overgrown on several holes, not a deal breaker but it will be nice to see them mowed shorter. The worst thing is the sand traps. As a course that has A LOT of bunkers its mostly dirt, loose dirt if your lucky.

I was surprised, I played Sat 1/17 at about 8am and the place was empty. It was 72 degrees and sunny and there was maybe 6 groups on the course. Really strange. Great for me - 3.5 hour round!

I have to agree with "gngernz". The fairways are really quite awful right now. Loads of patches being put it. Many of the fairway have several large expanses roped off. It's not so much bare dirt or dead spots at this course it's just the grass patches and ropes that are really annoying at this course. It really inhibits my ability to have fun. It's too bad as I played here in the spring and it was great. I avoid this course at all costs until the fairways come together.
