I walked on as a single on a Sunday morning, which seems quite easy to do as they keep spots open for this reason. Upon putting my name on the waiting list, I went to the range to warm up on their mats-only facility, which stretches to 235 yards, eliminating the use of driver for long hitters. I was slotted with the 9:07 group, which didn't tee off until 9:45 due to groups behind schedule. Pace of play was around 5 1/2 hours, which didn't seem all that slow as we were only held up on a few of the par 3's. Walking at San Clemente is very agreeable and it seems this was the method of choice for most groups. Tees, fairways and greens were extremely firm today. Overall, I had an enjoyable round and feel the $43 green fee was worth it for this type of course. Both high and low handicappers can enjoy the course layout, as most fairways are expansive and hazards rarely come into play, except for a few bunkers and a couple holes with forced carries. The front nine is pretty straightforward, while the back nine seemed to have more hills and challenging holes, especially the final three. One note of caution to newcomers to this course, respect Mother Nature and play every break toward the ocean.

I walked onto the Classic at Mile Square this past Tuesday around 12 o'clock, hoping to play a quick round of 18. I chose to walk, which is relatively easy due to the course design. All tees are close together and hills are nonexistent. It seems both courses get quite a bit of play, however, I finished as a single in approximately 3 1/2 hours. Tees and fairways are in pretty good shape for a municipal course. Greens were very good, although a bit firm. Course layout provides for a fairly quick round, as almost all holes are straight away, with very few water hazards. Anything left or right may find another fairway or a block of timber in its path, with most holes lined with a grove of trees. With that being said, I enjoyed playing the course and would certainly return for a $32 green fee. I recommend this course to all players, as the length from the Blues provides 6,700 yards of playable surface and the relatively easy layout works well for beginners.

Upon entering Black Gold's facility and stepping out of my vehicle under ample California sunshine, I knew all the elements were in place for a great day of golf. The gentlman in the Pro Shop was jovial and answered all my questions in an enthusiastic manner. Afterwards, I was off to the range, a standard all-mat practice area. Range balls were included with the green fee, a definite plus. I was paired with a threesome and sent to the tee on time, finishing in 4 3/4 hours. Black Gold provides a very challenging course for a player of my talent level. Tee shots must be extremely straight on all holes, as anything left or right spells trouble. Many of the holes provide varying countours and hills. The greens were running fast the day I played and it was rather difficult to get approach shots to stick due to the firmness. The course itself provides great views and has a nice range of challenging holes, with none categorized as easy. Two par 3 holes stretch to 200+ from the Blue tees. It is located in an ideal area for a golf course. I would recommend Black Gold to anyone looking for a challenge, although beginners should shy away from this course. Look for tee times online, as green fees are quite pricey at regular rates.
