Played Avila with my wife today. Despite the hefty green fees and terrible condition of the course, it was packed! That’s Labor Day Weekend for you. We had a nearly six hour round. If I play this course again before the rains (doubtful) I will play the sand traps as “ground under repair.” I’ve played this course hundreds of times since I retired in Cambria and the only time it was in worse condition was several years ago when flooding washed out several holes.

Played Morro Bay today with the modified coronavirus rules. The course had an outdoor set up to purchase green fees and special modifications to all the holes so one did not need to take the flagstick out nor reach into the hole to retrieve the ball. We had one threesome 9 holes in front of us, another threesome 4 holes behind us. Total of 9 golfers on the whole course. Played the round in just over three hours. Great to get out after being housebound all week.

Hunter Ranch was not quite as well maintained as a few months ago, but still excellent. Green were very smooth and very fast. I played the senior combo tees that allow me to carry hazards I otherwise could not. Two bunkers were out of play doing maintenance, but I saw no maintenance workers all day. Hunter Ranch recently sold and the jury’s still out whether the quality golf will continue ...they were giving a “today’s special” membership for a $50.00 discount. I should have bought it, as the price included two free rounds. The membership was $149.00 and I paid $70.00 to play today. If you play Hunter soon, ask them about it.

My wife and I played in a SLO County Tournament. It was a team game, best net on 1, two best nets on 2, three on three, then go back to 1 best net on 4. Doris, with her 34 handicap, carried all of us. Course was in good condition despite being newly purchased earlier this week. They had all new people working there, and several workmen around maintaining the course. Hopefully the rates won't increase. It is one of the best courses on the Central Coast and an OK value, $50.00 including cart and range balls for our tournaments. I was in just one bunker, and the sand was quite deep. But the ball came out as expected.

Played Alex in a match today. Despite the early frost warning, playing at almost noon was very comfortable. The course is in very good condition. Greens were fast but true. There were several unrepaired divots on the greens. I don't blame the course...we had a great match, trading wins back and forth. We both birdied number 10, I birdied number 8 and Alex birdied number 17 to take the money necklace back. I thoroughly enjoyed the day, especially the "Hot Deal" Alex found. I'd do that again in a heartbeat!

I play Morro Bay every week, and have done so for the past 18 years since I retired. Never have the greens been in better condition than today. Firm, fast but hold high shots into the green. Overall the course is in great shape. I was not in any of the three bunkers, so I can't really comment, but they looked good. If you have not played Morro Bay with fast greens, you will likely three or four putts several holes. Any putt above the hole on seven or twelve that does not go in will be 10 or 12 feet off the green for your next putt. But as there is no water and few bunkers the course rates 2 or 3 strokes lower than most courses.

Had a great match with Mark today. A little windy, but not bad. Second time I've played Sterling Hills, the first shortly after it opened. A lot more homes around than there was then. The course played fair but tough. Greens were very challenging. I hit a high sand wedge just short of one green and the ball hit and rolled through the green by several feet. Our match was back and forth the entire day, neither of us up by more than two holes and tied several times. I made par on the 20th hole, but it was one of my stroke holes that gave me the match. It was a six hour round trip, but the drive was most enjoyable. I had a wonderful day thanks to Johnny and Nick.

Doris, Nick and I played both Mountain Vista courses yesterday. I can honestly say these were two of the nicest courses we’ve played all year. With underpar two for one deal and 18 hole free replay it was also the best deal. We virtually had the courses to ourselves and the pace of play was what we chose. Doris played the white tees, I played the blues and Nick played black. Worked great as our respective drives ended fairly close. Doris planned to only play 18 but enjoyed the first 18 so much she played 36 holes. What a great day!

Played my match with Francisco today. Paso Golf Club was unique; perhaps a half inch of rain in an hour and a half. We stopped for lunch around eleven to see if the rain would settle down. We were back out at 12:30 and waded through the back nine. I wore my water proof shoes...NOT. Greens were so flooded we agreed to automatic two putts on the worst ones. Often the fairways were ankle deep in water with no way around. I had a great time playing with cops. A fun day with two super guys. I won the first holes then we played even for the rest of the day.

Doris and play with friends from LA Golf Singles where we meet and play twice a year. Parking is difficult as the lot is hundreds of yards from the clubhouse. A shuttle will be by if you’re patient but they encourage their “stay and play.” We did enjoy the day with old friends and a great dinner.

Monarch was cool at 8:00, and I kept my jacket on until the 18th hole. The five hour pace of play was due to the foursome in front of us, no one in front of them as far as the eye could see and no marshalls around. Overall the course was in good condition, but it's usually better. The greens were unusually slow and there were move divots in the fairways than I experience at this course.

Played Tuesday, June 18th at 8:00 am, then again June 19th at 3:00 pm. Same course, dramatically different conditions. Tuesday visibility was about 50 yards due to heavy fog. Wednesday it was clear and warm. The ball went farther Wednesday but the greens were slower than Tuesday. I don't think they had mowed them between the two rounds. I enjoyed both rounds.
