Out Friday 4/28 for a 2:50 start as single joining a threesome. Conditions overall are very good with minor exceptions. Everything is green with good coverage— teeing grounds mostly level, fairways still had some runout to them. The rough was as lush as it gets here and where it was green it was frequently penal. There were definitely stretches where you could lose ball and while I didn't, there were a couple of occasions when I thought I had. I was in way more bunkers than usual for me and they were firm. The ball usual sat up in them and while they were playable, fluffy doesn't live here. Green side was good for short game and the greens themselves were the point of reservation. They are still showing the aeration pattern as they are in recovery and will probably need another week before they are fully normal. They were not slow but there was a discernible deceleration on longer putts to factor in. I thought they putt better than they looked. While not crisp, the speed was still medium and the balls tracked pretty well. I didn't see much diverting or jumpiness in the rolls. If you come out expecting clean greens you might be put off, but if you know what you are getting into, the adjustments are minor and consistent. Don't let it stop you from getting a round in here. I'd play it again without hesitation. Pace was unusually good for a Friday afternoon and we got around in something like 4.25 hours. A bit warm for a good portion of the round, it was perfect at the end. I think I paid under $15 to walk which made it a ridiculously good deal. Good times.

Apologies in advance for the brevity. Played Friday 2/11 teeing off at 1:30 as single joining a three-some. For this time of year the overall conditions are pretty solid and better than some as munis go. A fair amount of rollout in the fairways, bunkers were generally groomed and a little on the firm side, the greens were quick and reasonably clean. The group I was in were a bit slow and hindered the pace of those behind us, but we got around in under 4.5 hrs and enough dusk at the end for us and a couple of following groups to finish. I played like goose poop (there was a little of that along with the geese), but I'd happily play it again.

Played here for my first time today. Earlier this week, a single spot for 10:40 popped up on the LA City Golf booking site, so I nabbed it. $44 green fee + $16 for cart. Check in was smooth but as our tee time approached, the pro shop kept calling two of the players booked at that time, who never showed up. So he stuck another single from the wait list with me and another single already on the tee. I rode, sharing a cart with the wait list guy. The other guy walked. Started right on time and POP was good at around 4:15. We never waited until the last two holes got a bit bunched up.

Conditions are mostly good. It's a lot of "good, but..." Greens are smooth, medium-fast to fast, and medium firmness. The "but" is quite a few ball marks and some greens seemed to have small bare spots. Fairways are green and have good coverage for the most part with some less than ideal areas. Rough varies from bare spots to about two-and-a-half-inch deep turf. Black tee boxes were mostly good, but a couple weren't. Bunkers were very well maintained, but some only had a very thin layer of top sand over a very firm base.

Unfortunately for me, it was my third consecutive round playing in very strong winds. As a result, there was lots of tree debris (pine needles, mostly) on the course. I enjoyed the back nine more than the front. In spots, it reminded me of a little nicer Green River. Overall, a solid course and recommended conditions.

I'm surprised HD hasn't been reviewed in almost three months. I got out yesterday, 9/17 for a 12:50 start as a single joining another single and twosome. I walked, they rode. Start was on time and the twosome, running late, joined at the second tee. Overall conditions were solid. Teeing grounds here are large, generally level, and you are usually teeing up with green coverage — no issues there. The fairways were good, predominantly green and even a bit lush, reducing rollout more typical for here — not exactly shaggy but about mowing time. With all the recent heat, good to not see extended brown and hardpan. While there were some isolated thinner areas and also a few overwatered spots, these were exceptions. Rough varied between very playable and a little punitive but was generally green fairway-adjacent. I was in one bunker in which the sand was a little moist and heavy but it had give and I escaped adequately. I think most were drier. The areas surrounding the greens were suitably grown in and supported the short game. The kikuyu effect is on display here though and approach shots coming in and hitting short of the green would frequently bounce straight up and die rather than kick forward. The greens were in pretty good shape. Reasonably clean and no excess of ball marks, they ran medium, a touch on the slow side on the front, and by the back nine had dried out to medium on the quicker side. Weather was nice, warm enough to generate some sweat but breeze enough to cool it off a little and a relief compared to the recent heat wave — certainly not cool but seemed it by comparison. The group was congenial and the pace was right around 4.5 hrs. As Hansen goes, definitely recommended.

Just wanting to provide a quick update since no one has submitted a review since my last one. I just played this morning on Sat June 25. The course is back in great shape now (for an LA City course). Fairways are giving very good lies to hit from, and the greens are back fully healed and rolling great. Tee boxes are a little chewed up where they placed them today, but really not much of a problem finding a good spot to hit from. The rough is inconsistent which is fine to me. I stayed out of all bunkers so can't comment on them. We were out at 6:00 am, so the pace was very good in just under 4 hours. The gentleman at the pro shop was great as always, and he was on top of calling out groups to the tee which I always appreciate to keep things moving along.

Played Hansen on Sunday 5/1, because I love this course and wanted to see how the greens are healing after aeration about 25 days ago. Unfortunately the greens are not that great right now. It's playable, but not anywhere near as good as they usually are. The holes from punching are still somewhat visible but getting better, but the sand is still quite prevalent at the surface and the grass itself is somewhat long and makes for some very slow putts. With the grass on the greens being as long as they are, the grain of the grass plays a significant factor which is not normal for Hansen. There were also a couple of holes (#9 and #12) where the front part of the green was soaked by the sprinklers and had a large section with standing water (6:10 AM tee time mind you, so perhaps that was evaporated by later in the morning). Oh and the blue tee boxes were very chewed up, but that doesn't really bother me that much.

On the bright side, the fairways were in great condition overall, so was nice to hit approach shots from good lies. The greens being as soft and sandy as they were, they are very receptive to approaches -- just tough to make birdies with the greens in this shape unless you're right on top of the hole.

Pace was decent (sub 4 hours) but could have been better if the first group wasn't so slow. They picked up the pace after about 7 holes. No one behind us all day. Beautiful weather didn't hurt either.

Again for those who don't mind, it's still playable right now. But for those who are pickier, I would wait a couple more weeks.

Played at 10am on 3/6 with Mr. Kich. Course is very playable right now. Greens rolling really nice save for a few areas. Fairways surprisingly consistent. Not terribly lush but no bare areas either. Rough, as usual, a mixed bag. The defense of this course is the trees and subtle 1-club elevation changes. Tees were fine. Sand Traps also very consistent somewhere between fluffy and hard pan. Waited on almost every shot but still finished in about 4:20.

I played Hansen Dam last Sat. The course is in good winter condition.

No issues with the tee boxes, some chewed up but always found a good spot.

No issues with the tee boxes, some chewed up but always found a good spot.

The fairways were real nice, good coverage. Winter thin, good runout on drives.

Greens are in good condition. Slower than most would like, but it probably helps pace of play. Collar areas are mixed bag, some bare some good. Shaved back enables TX wedge from 10 yards or so if the wedge isn't working.

Bunkers are fine. Not CC deep soft sand, but consistent muni bunkers.

No drink carts here. Snack bar (can't call it a restaurant) no bar area, no TV's in the small indoor area. Has basics & ice cold schooners.

POP was almost 4.5 starting at 9:00am. Group in front got 2 holes behind by 7th, finally got moving after some heckling. Still slow. No Marshall here. Driving Range (Mats) & decent short game area.

I still really enjoy the Dam. Fun course, not killer tough & a bit easier to get on then most city courses.

I Recommend.

Back again yesterday morning; tee off at 8:40, payed $47 to walk. We finished in 4.5 hours. There was a CA Junior Golf tournament being held later in the day and the course was trimmed up nicely for it. The greens, fairways and rough were in as good as shape as possible. Lots of roll out on drives. The rough was barely longer than the fairways in most areas and were not at all penal. Greens were all good: smooth and fairly fast. The only real drawbacks were the bunkers: almost all were a thin layer of sand over hard pan. The tees were somewhat firm but mostly level with ample areas to hit from.
