Played yesterday, twilight. And I was pleasantly surprised. Course is in FINE shape.

Greens rolled at medium/fast speed. They rolled true. Picked a line an hit the ball firmly and the results were predictable. Noticed the speeds varied from green to green but for the most part they rolled well and you could tell just by walking on them the speed of the greens.

Fairways had decent coverage. Nice cushion underneath. There were a few thin lies but playable.

Bunkers were ALL well stocked with nice somewhat compacted sand underneath. I prefer hitting this sort of sand where the bunker gives you a little feedback and decent bounce to hit your ball.

Rough varied from VERY thick around the green complexes to a little heavy along the sides of the fairway.

Tee boxes were level and playable.

Pace of Play (POP) a little over 3 hours as a single until the last 4 holes. Honestly playing this fast as a walking single that late in the day was FUN. The heat was bearable with a nice breeze towards the end of the day. For the money you get what you pay for and then some. I paid $19 to walk twilight. It was a workout but for the conditions of the course at present it's definitely worth the value. Recommended.

Played last Saturday at Los Amigos again and the conditions were pretty much the usual of late. Medium speed greens with varied surfaces from smooth to bumpy depending on the hole, mostly good fairways with some lush sections and some quite thin, non-existent rough in most areas that would cause any trouble, tee boxes in need of some love, and nice sand in the bunkers.

POP was actually quite good for a 9:25am tee time and we walked within four and a half hours while only doing a lot of waiting on the back nine. No cart service but a good snack shop at the turn. Customer service was good at all levels.

Haven't seen much change at Los Amigos for quite a while … it remains a decent option for a good round of golf but not one that's going to wow you for weeks after.

Having not played here in many months, decided to give it a go today. First off at dawn and POP was 2.5 H (walking). Found the course to be in decent playing condition. Most of the tee boxes were in fine shape, but did find a couple, that were chewed up (not a big deal). Bunkers were all clean and playable, with no issues (was in 2). Fairways had satisfactory coverage (found a few brown/bare spots) and provided good roll and lies, all round. Very little (if any) rough to deal with. Greens were all clean, in good shape w/o divot damage and chipped/putted just fine all round. Customer service was excellent at all levels. An enjoyable round of golf, IMO.

Sunday round at Los Amigos, walking with a push cart and playing from the back tees. Course is still a little rough around the edges but could easily get back into good playing shape with just a little more precipitation.

Fairways are mostly dry with the occasional lush area, and the rough is essentially the same. Frustrating to land perfect drives and be met with thin, dried out lies. But on the flip side, the greens are in pretty good shape right now. Not overly fast but had good coverage, seem recovered from aeration and hold lines and shots well. And the sand is in great shape. Tee boxes are varied from good to needs a lot of TLC.

Pretty straightforward, parkland style front nine, then things get interesting on the back nine and finish with three very tough holes. Many a great score have been humbled on that treacherous finish. But we keep coming back because Los Amigos is still pretty fun, and even better when the POP on a Sunday is just around four and a half hours. Wasn't expecting that at all and was very pleasantly surprised by that.

Sad to say it but Los Amigos has (temporarily at least) returned to its pre-makeover days. It's in the worst shape I've seen it in years and it's very concerning. Luckily it was only $32 to walk on a crowded Sunday afternoon, but not much else was good for the day. The fairways are brown, thin and burned out. You'll get some decent roll out there but likely end up in anything from a yellow patch to an exposed area of dried out dirt. The rough isn't too much better, but at least it feels like there's something under your ball to get it up in the air. Chipping proved to be very challenging based on conditions. Tee boxes were mostly okay but the greens were mostly bumpy, predominantly slow and showing all kinds of wear and tear. They did at least hold shots pretty well, but other than that you could barely keep a line with the bumps all over the place and varying speeds. POP was a nightmare as well, waiting on every hole until the 15th. Sand traps were actually in very good shape across the board - at least they got that right. But it's very upsetting to see the course that's made such a big comeback from many years ago revert back to the same old tired schtick. I know that this place will get its groove back when we either get some rain or more people stop showing up because of conditions, but until I see a good review again, I'll probably go elsewhere.

Tuesday 1/30/2018 – Played Los Amigos in Downey using the GK Coupon. Round, cart, and lunch for $27, after 12:30 pm Monday through Friday. Los Amigo’s seems to be one of the most popular courses in LA County, especially with walkers. Arrived about an hour early to stretch and warm up. Parking is almost always an issue at this course as it was today, but I found a space. The pro shop is clean and efficient and well stocked in the event your forgot something. The starter was very friendly and helpful. I was playing with my friend Bob, we picked up a large bucket of range balls to split, cost was $10. The driving range is very nice, with a host of good targets, all hitting bays were off the grass. The only amenity that was lacking were bag stands for cart bags. The café was efficient, the hot dog good, and the medium drink of reasonable size. There are a number strategically placed relief stations on the course, all were clean. The course was busy, our tee time was 12:50 and we got off on time as a foursome paired with a very nice and very good elderly couple. They are just about to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. We were behind a foursome, fivesome that somehow because a six some (slow) and a threesome. As might be guessed every par three was a backup. As a collective group everyone was friendly. My only complaint was that the six some had four very good players, that did not appear to know how to fix a ball mark. The putting and chipping practice areas are really good, spacious enough to accommodate the number of players lined up to get out on course. When we were called up to the tee, there was a fivesome on the tee, a threesome waiting to get off, us, and a foursome immediately behind us, most of us were practicing waiting our turn. That is really the extent of the good part of the round. I like the layout of this course a lot. Some water, dog legs that require accuracy but not extreme distance, and sloped greens that if they had been in good condition might have been fun. All of the tee boxes were beat up, and unlevel. With the volume of play this makes sense for the par threes, however the par 4’s and 5’s was no different. Most of the tee boxes were either rock hard, so much so that I had to use my foot to push down a tee peg (I was working on techniques playing only irons for this round so tee’ing it up low). The conditions of the tee boxes were very different from my past rounds here. Hopefully they will be aerated soon. Fairways were rock hard, and populated mostly with crab grass. Very few areas were covered in what I would call grass. This wasn’t typical hardpan, it was dirt, crab grass, occasional grass and very dry. On the positive side I hit a five iron thin off the tee, and out drove all three of my playing partners going out 230 yards. The roll was unbelievable on all the fairways. Areas to either side of the fairway centerline where for the most part exposed dirt, and crab grass. Rough, there was very little of what I would call rough, you know the 3-5 inch tall grass that makes shots harder. Today that would have been welcome vs. the spidery weeds that passed as rough. It’s one thing to have the grain of the grass go against you, but hitting into a weed surrounded by bare dirt barely covered by another spidery weed joining tentacles made basic chip and bump and run shots a crap shoot. This is primarily what was passing for greenside rough. Bunkers are challenging, most have excellent sand, a few have virtually no sand at all. Overall they are very good. An earlier review said the greens were bumpy. They were, and they are. There is a complete coverage of grass on most greens, they are pretty and greener than the rest of the course, and they were challenging with some wicked ball placements, and slopes. The pin on 15 was on top of a pyramid that broke in three different directions at the pin. But ultimately getting the ball in the hole was as much a matter of luck as skill with the number of bumps. Because the coupon is good for rounds after 12:30 and pace of play is slow, at a little over 5 ¼ hours completing the round is a challenge. We just made it the 18th green before full darkness perhaps helped by a bright full moon. This will likely improve as the coupon is good through March. Downey is a longish drive for me, I live in Mission Viejo. My friend however lives in Lakewood so this is a decent drive for him. Our playing partners and the layout of the course worked together to make this an enjoyable day, on a course that clearly needs to be aerated, seeded and watered. Did I enjoy myself yes, was it worth the money yes, am I going to rush back between now and March, not likely.

6:35 am tee time, but at 6:20 there was nobody on the tee, so the shop said it was OK to go. Good thing as we probably finished 5-6 holes ahead of the group we would have been behind, and we certainly did not play all that fast, just a tad under three hours. The greens were very bumpy ! In addition, they had the pins placed on such severe slopes that on a number of instances, the ball would run up to the cup, then roll back anywhere from a few feet & in two cases, off the green! Considering the greens were not fast, I can not imagine now unfair they would have played were the greens smooth/fast ? Fairways were decent as were the bunkers, in fact while not in any bunkers, they looked really good. I enjoy this short course, as I find it interesting and fun. Noticed they added about 30 yards to #13, which now measures 429. I hit a good drive and barely made it to the dogleg to have a clear shot to the green. Plus #17 is 223, which is not exactly short for us old guys. But for $16.50, what a bargin to play these county courses

Played here a couple of times in December. One on Sunday 12/17 with a tee time around 10:30 am and the other on Saturday 12/30 with tee time around 1 pm. Pace of play on 12/17 was around 5 hours and 15 minutes and POP on 12/30 was around 3 hours and 45 minutes (twilight start time).

Course is an LA county golf course. It's not a destination golf course. It's just an ok golf course to play for me. It was reasonable to play here. Water comes into play on 4 holes. First time playing hole #16, I lost two golf balls. You need to layup on your tee shot on hole 16 short of the water (toward the bridge) and then you need to carry the water on your approach shot to the green. What I didn't know was there is water to the right on hole 16 on your second shot. Did better on hole 16 the second time I played it (almost got a par).

Fairways had fairly good coverage but there were bare and thin spots here and there. Landed in a few bunkers. They have sand in their bunkers, which is nice compared to some courses that just have dirt. Greens were very nice. Parts of the course are next to housing. You need to be careful not to hit your shots into their backyards. Some of the holes have severe dog legs.

They have a driving range here and short game practice areas here. Course is pretty flat if you want to walk 18.

Played here on 12/24/2017 as a single. I am not a big fan of this course for a few reasons. The conditions are always just okay, the pace is usually slow, and the lay out is nothing to get pumped about. I give everything about 5 out of 10 with the exception of the greens which were pretty nice. They rolled well, held well, and were semi-fast. This is not a destination course but it is good place to work on your game from all different type of lies.
