Good: Staff is always wonderful. Place is never overbooked. The setting is quite relaxing with Deer all over everywhere.

Bad: Tee boxes are not level. Fairways are all at an angle. Drainage ditches run through the fairways. The fairways are very thin in many places. The greens are impossible to read. Sand is thin in some bunkers (though they have recently added sand to some of the bunkers). No beverage cart in the afternoons.

All in all, this is my "home course", so I will certainly play again. Cannot say it is the best course in the world, but it is certainly decent enough for a casual afternoon round.

Love coming here to get a round in before work. It's never overbooked and on Thursdays Kevin is the nicest guy to deal with here. Great customer service friendly staff. During the week the course is mostly quiet and provides a good fun round and a place to really work on your game. Not really championship quality or difficulty. The greens will really test your putting and ability to read some tricky breaks. The fairways are decent with some bare areas but mostly good condition. Tree lined fairways throughout make you wanna keep your shots in the fairway . All in all a decent course for fun or if you're looking to tune up parts of your game.

It was my first time playing here.. It was okay. The course has a pretty fun layout and some challenging shots. I paid $38 for 9:30am tee time. It was okay for the price. Its prime time so I am okay with paying that price. The course conditions were okay.. rough was rough and the fairway seemed like it was just really short rough. Their greens were pretty long so they were soft and slow but thats easily fixed by being cut. Their greens there are fun because of how sloped they were and how challenging the putts were. Tee boxes were a little bad but nothing I couldn't manage. I would definitely play here again later on the day when its cheaper.

Strange, that when I called last week requesting a tee time, I was told that 11:15 was the earliest available time, but when I arrived, the lot was pretty empty and very few groups teeing off ? We were able to tee off 30 min early and finished in not too much more than 3 hours 15 min ??? where were all the people ?

Really enjoy playing this course. Lots of fun holes, birdie opportunities galore. Lots and lots of deer roaming around, which is cool! The only complaint I have is that the greens were as slow as I can remember them being. While it makes the course a lot easier, I prefer them quick .... makes for a much more interesting round. Otherwise course was a decent condition.

Played this morning in 2:30 (used a cart of course). Course does not appear busy early so took full advantage. This is a course built in 1966 up in the canyons of La Verne and part of LA County golf system. Not much has been done to the design and though it does show some wear, it is still a great test of golf on a course that uses the natural topography of the land w/o moving heaven/earth and some great views of the mountains and surrounding valley below. I found all the tee boxes to be level and needing nothing more than mowing (but they have had a lot of rain and were just getting after the course today). Fairways were mowed/clean and providing decent roll and good lies, though you will find some thin lies, just due to the time of the year. But the fairways are undulating, slanting, tree lined and tee placement is crucial (a slicer/fader is in for a long day). Not to mention the canyon carry required on # 2, 11, 12, 13,16. Bunkers were clean and raked and provided no problems. Greens had been mowed and were putting great as well as when you needed to chip to the hole. Many of the greens have slope and you need to be below the hole, instead of above it. This is (IMO) a great course that will be either loved/hated (loved by the golf purist - hated by the high handicapper) and should be played at least once. I had not played here in many years but will certainly put this one back on the "to be played more often" list for sure. And if for no other reason than to eat in the cafe. Believe it or not, the highest price item on the menu, was $4.50 and the food was great. Highly recommend you give it a try. And customer service was excellent.

Played Wednesday 6/11 with an excellent rate from Golf Now. Have not played here in a while because the last time I played here upon arrival to second hole (par 3) it looked like a used golf cart parking lot! This time however the pace was very nice and we finished under four hours. Condition over all was pretty good, as with most county courses it is choppy in spots but those are spots you should not be in anyway for the most part. The greens are what make the course great, very good condition and difficult to read. They are a bit bushy but that is a godsend because if they were cut and closer it would make for a long day. Over all a really good round at a great value, friendly staff and nice facility.

If wildlife is your thing here's your golf course my deer. Or I should say, my, there sure are a lot of deer on this golf course. This is an L.A. County course and you know the routine with those courses as far as conditions etc. but a little extra care goes into this one and frankly, the layout is so unique and the setting so beautiful, you tend to turn the other cheek and not notice the occasional rutted dirt path. There are deep canyons to traverse and large old oaks and pine trees that inconveniently get in the way and disprove that 90% air theory. The greens are a story all by themselves. Think "Haunted Shack" years ago at Knott's Berry Farm. These things defy the laws of physics and like at the Haunted Shack, your putts will go uphill when they should go downhill, but water still pours the right way. In this land of the three putt, many a dogmeat will be paid out and you'll need several rounds to figure the greens out. Summers can see the course get beaten down a bit and dry but in the spring it is beautiful and lots of fun. Deer, hawks, coyotes and lots of squirrels are regularly in the gallery to watch your bad shots and you definitely feel like you're far away and up in the mountains away from the hustle and bustle. Give this course a try but be careful on the weekends; its really popular and you may get a longer time to look at the wildlife than most biologists.

Made a visit to old Marshall Canyon this afternoon. Found a $22 hot deal on GN at 12:10. Figured it would be a slow round, but was surprised when I showed up and hardly anyone around the clubhouse. I ended up going off by myself around noon and it was awesome having the first 6 holes to myself, then I ran into two groups waiting to tee off on the 7th tee! I ended up joining with the threesome in front of me and we had to wait a lot after that. Front nine was 1.5 hours and back nine was 2.5, but I still can't complain too much about a 4-hour pace on a County course. The course was in pretty decent shape heading into spring. A little spotty as you'd expect from a course of this level, but very playable from tee to green. Greens were soft and receptive and rolling at medium speeds. These are some tricky greens with all the natural slopes, so you still want to be below the hole as much as possible. I was in one bunker and it was fine. Worst part of the course is the cart paths, which are terrible and a lot of areas throughout the rough/fairways are also quite bumpy, so it's an uncomfortable ride for sure. It's been quite a few years since I played here, but I always thought Marshall Canyon was one of the more underrated LA County-managed courses. Comparable conditions to the other courses, but with nice scenery in a secluded area and fun layout. Definitely a "target" course that requires more accuracy than length (tricky doglegs and tight angles) and the severely side-sloped fairways can be frustrating at times. Always aim to the high side!!! Drainage ditches are also a nuisance, but you get a free drop from point of entry, so they won't mess up your score. Not everyone will like this course, but I'd take it over a lot of the other more boring munis and county tracks.

Played on Monday 3/10, early afternoon T time. I can be pretty tough on LA county owned courses, just seems they are out of touch with their customers- they don't offer discounts or specials, like other clubs do, but today the course was in good shape and the pace was excellent, no waiting at all. Dozens of deer just milling about was pretty cool too.

T's: Good shape no problems.
Fairways: Good winter shape, hate the drainage ditches.
Sand: Fair condition.
Greens: Much better shape than the last time I was here. Second course in a row, that the blossoming grass, slowed the greens down and knocked them down in the ratings.
Layout: Fun, keep everything on the high side, the adventure starts on the greens.

Found a hot deal here that made it a bargain, their normal price is a little high.
