Played here 4/28/18 at 6:30 am. Pace of play was good at 4 hours for us. The greens on this course are ridiculously difficult to read. Everything slants and some greens were wet with others being dry so reading speed was very difficult. The staff at the front were very friendly and nice. Fairways were in good shape and tee boxes were ok. This course is pretty decent for a public course. All the fairways seem to slant.... I played terrible because the one thing this course lacks is yardage markers. the front 9 seems to have them with stakes but there were none on the back 9! You think youre 150 yards out when in reality youre 180. This course needs to spend a few bucks, get yardage markers set up and fix a few sand traps. The greens are very very hard to read. Some look like they have a break and they are straight, others look straight as an arrow and they break right before the hole.... CRAZY! Other than that its a fun course to play!

Played today in a nice POP of 4 H, as course (surprisingly) was crowded. Having not played here since last fall (and last review was by Weber in Nov) decided to see what was going on? Course is in typical S CA early spring (w/o rain) conditions. Grass is beginning to grow and found (for the most part) decent lies and roll in the fairways (but they still have a ways to go). I had no issues with the tee boxes, but they do need to be leveled (come on LA county, spend some money here). Bunkers were playable. Very little rough, but there are numerous OB areas and ravines to avoid/carry throughout the round. Not to mention the many elevation changes and tree lined fairways, that are not prevalent at most county courses. Greens were very nice. The front 9 was slow and it appeared they had not been mowed (but still acceptable) and the back 9 were very good and you did not want to be above the hole. Personally, I think this is the hidden gem within the LA county golf stable, but the county is not only cheap, but too stupid to put some money into this course. It has character, elevation changes, unique hole designs and no homes around the course. The citizens of E LA county are being deprived of a great golf course (IMO) by the County of LA not spending some money here. But no doubt they appreciate the revenue that it generates (hypocrites). Customer service excellent at all levels. I encourage all golfers to experience this course at least once. You may hate it or love it, but the true golfer in you will see what this course has to offer and could be with TLC. Oh and you will love all the deer?

We had the first tee time which was 7:00am. (Wow, I sure hate this time of year, can't wait unit the time change next week) I arrived at 6:20 and there were people already mulling about. Teed off at 6:30 (In the dark) but we could see by #3. The foursomes behind us never got close so we took our time and strolled through in a little under 2 1/2 hours. I was concerned about the greens based upon the prior review, but that was the best part of the course. Very soft, too slow for my taste, but reasonably true. Fairways had many bare areas, plus places where the grass was a foot thick ? Bunkers were all raked and both that I found had sufficient sand. Tee boxes were "iffy" It was like being up in Washington state. The overcast, cool conditions, with the fog settling around the mountains. Love the trees and lots and lots of deer, to the point where you needed to "shue" them away so you could hit your shot. Loved it ! Using the senior discount, it's a deal to play here. Staff was great and enjoyed every moment. Fun short course with challenging greens, even with their slow speed

I just played this course today (Oct. 13, 2017) and the last time I played was approximately 10 years ago. I remember the course neatly kept, greens nice and clean, fairways smooth with green grass and even the cart paths smooth. Today when I played it was totally opposite. The tees boxes uneven and unkept. Fairways are decent with grass. The greens are extremely unreadable. If you know the term "Broccoli" then thats exactly how to describe the greens throughout the course. Your able to finish the hole but is non-enjoyable. Now the cart paths leading to and from the hole are like your riding a roller coaster from hell. The price to play is no where near the level of condition of the course ($40).

Final thoughts.......if you don't mind playing to practice your accuracy off the tee box, due to narrow fairways, then this is the place to be. Otherwise they to due some major work in order for me to go back.

Based on the last review by Weber, decided to give this place a try. Starter got me right out and finished in 2.5 hours and totally enjoyed the course and the surroundings. I concur with his review (look it over) and only have a few things of my own to add. If you are going to ride (as I did today) be aware that due the pathways being in such bad shape, you will be have one he!! of a bumpy ride, so drive slow (I think I need my kidney's checked after today). It is also a shame, that the County of LA has avoided spending any funds out here, like they did with Los Verdes; La Mirada; Los Amigos and others and then spent $14 M (yes million) on the 9 Hole course in Norwalk. This course has it all, IMO (go see for yourself) and could be a tremendous course with some updating? That said, go play it if you have not done so, it really is an enjoyable "old school" layout.

There are so many reasons I like playing here, from the wonderful staff which is always accommodating, to the great rate as a senior, to the beautiful setting with all the deer. The greens when they're good, and they are very good right now, makes this course a joy to play. Local knowledge is critical when reading these greens, and even then they provide a test.

While the course is not long, it has a number of interesting holes and provides many good birdie opportunities, while also offering a few difficult holes ( 5, 6, 12 & 18) If you have not played here for a while, get out and enjoy some of the better conditions I have seen here. A wonderful morning spent ..... like a walk in the park.

Played here 6/25/17 at 6 am. This course has improved! I was amazed with how great the greens were and the sand traps! Tee boxes were in great shape. Fairways were good and rough was true ROUGH! I loved playing here! The groups in front of us didnt fix any of their divot marks. The golf shop needs to enforce this there or those beautiful greens will go to crap. I must have fixed 60-70 divots in the green and used all my sand in the fairways. I really wish people would take care of their swings and chunks. It makes it better for everyone else. No one like hitting into the fairway only to have to play your ball off a mud spot because some A hole didnt put seed there or replace the chunk they took out of the fairway. This is a great course. It's worth the$50 we played. I would pay up to $65 for it but no more than that. Watch out for hole #11 par 3 (i think this is the hole, its the first poar 3 on the back 9) It plays a hell of a lot longer than the scorecard indicates. I used a 7 iron and landed in the trap in front of the green and i nutted that ball pretty good. Great course hope they continue to maintain it its a beautiful area with many deer roaming around.

Teed off at 8:27, finished just before 2. The round didn't feel that long, but we did wait on every shot.

This was my first time here, and it was very fun. This course is right at the base of the foothills, and as such has many uneven lies and elevation changes. The conditions are overall quite average, but the setting makes up for that. Not a dog track by any means, but definitely no Goose Creek either.

A word to other first time players: You will not score well. You will three-putt. Often. You may even four-putt; I did on #5. Missed the hole, rolled back, rinse, repeat. The greens are unreadable your first time out. With a few more rounds I'm sure I'll learn the nuances, and I will be back. Bonus points for all the deer hanging out and watching you bomb your tee shots!

Marshall Canyon is not as bad as some would lead you to believe. Yes there are a few areas where the fairways are thin, but all in all the course is in relatively good shape. Tee boxes need a little work,but nothing that closing them for a couple of weeks to let the grass take hold. Greens are in good shape and are very receptive of just about any shot thats fired at them. Even low shots were holding pretty good. What makes this course play tough is the slope in the fairways and trying to figure out the break in the greens. Most of the holes run east or west and the slope runs south away from the mountains so landing on the proper side of the fairway is imperative to make sure that your ball doesn't roll down the slope and into the rough and trees. I can't say to much about the bunkers because I didn't hit in to any so no report there. The greens can be tricky to read and unless you have played here before or are playing with someone who knows them it can make for a long day with the putter. If you are riding be prepared to have your teeth rattled loose. The cart paths are horrendous and are in need of serious replacement. Staff was very friendly and even let me tee off about an hour early. Not many people out on the course on a monday morning so play was a little over 3 hours to play. The morning sports some wild life as there were about 20 deer grazing along the first few holes. If you hit your driver long and can work the ball then holes 8, 9 & 12 are reachable off the tee and can lead to some eagle attempts. Holes 1, 10 & 17 are par 5's and with good tee shots are reachable in 2 and with the way the greens are holding hitting a fairway wood or a hybrid is not a bad choice. For a county course this course is not that bad and it can be a great place for all skill levels to enjoy.
