After a couple days of rain, I was trying to be selective in choosing a course to play - one that drains well. I choose Marshall Cyn because I never have a problem getting out early and I knew the course would be playable. I was right on both counts.

Except for a few muddy areas in the low spots, the course was perfectly playable. No casual water and even soft spots. The fairways could use a cutting, but otherwise were just fine. One of the best aspects of playing this course are the greens, which can be a challenge. However, because none of the greens were cut they were super slow - probably somewhere about 5 or 6 on the stimp. A struggle to get the ball to the hole and no fear of the ball running out. Too bad, because it took the best part of the course out of the equation.

I always enjoy playing here, I think that it is just so beautiful with the trees and views, plus this morning there were deer EVERYWHERE. What a great morning to be out on the course totally alone except for Mother Nature. That coupled with the senior rate of 15.75, it was pure heaven at a discount.

Play here a lot, and rarely review, since the sum of this course is greater than it's parts.

Pro shop staff is always amazing. My golf instructor, bruce, from claremont golf course works here now, amd will be giving lessons to my son soon. Rest of the staff is always amazing to me and anyone i bring along. Let me walk on as a single any time of day, amy day of the week, and do not mind if i hop around holes to skip slow playing groups. POP today was about 3.5 hours, which is good for a saturday on a muni course.

In any event, played 18 here today (January 14) and will play another 18 here tomorrow. Course was pretty muddy today as a result of all the rain we have been having.

Tee boxes were muddy and unlevel. Lots of divots on tee boxes, as well (some mine, unfortunately).

Fairways were decent and had good coverage of grass thanks to all of the rain. Few muddy spots but not so bad that my cart got stuck.

Rough is penal here. If you are in the rough, you are in the trees. Good luck getting a clean shot out.

Sand was actually pretty decent today. No standing water, and they were not hard pan.

Greens were soggy, but still fast. As is normal, the greens are impossible to read. They break the opposite direction of what they look like. After playing Marshal for 7+ years, i still cannot get good reads here. Very few ball marks though, and the few i saw, i went ahead and fixed.

As much as the conditions here are iffy, i adore this course. Beats me up each time i play, but i keep coming back (i moved to la verne to be near Marshal). Views are awesome, no houses around it, and deer everywhere. Quite proud to call it my home course.

Played Marshall Canyon Sunday Oct 16th and 7:45, for the first time. It is an older course, allot of mature trees and most of the fairways slope down away from the mountains. I was told the greens do the same. The greens were recovering so the grass was longer and therefore slow and I never adjusted, just looked at the slope and babied the speed way too much. There were allot of deer and it was cool to see. Well we paid and it was $51.50, I thought wow what a weird price, then it hit me, 5150 is the code for "be crazy" so I guess the course is trying to tell you something, like if you are out here on a Sunday you are 5150 lol. The tee boxes were very hard, actually broke one of those unbreakable plastic tees, allot of the fairway were bare, was in one trap and luckily I was on the up slope and had sand but my partners found allot of hard dirt, like I said the greens were longer grass and really slow. This is a course that really requires knowledge of the course. Over all it is an interesting course and I would play it again to just to see if I could read the greens better.

I had not played here for a while, and based upon the most recent review, did not have high expectations. Played first thing Monday morning, teed off at 5:30 (Nobody around) It was beautiful except that I had sprinklers in the fairways on almost every hole!

The greens are not good! While not as bad as I expected, they are bumpy, patchy, and slow (I only had about 4 cut greens in all fairness) These greens are enough of a challenge, without having to factor in the bumps. The fairways are not too bad, with the exception of a few bare areas. Not in any bunkers but they looked OK.

The staff was perfect, and for $15.25, it was a steal Always enjoy this course, because it has lots of birdie opportunities, great views and setting, and normally fun greens to try to figure out. Hope they can get them back in shape.

Suffice it to say this is a Government (LA County) owned and operated facility. Conditions were poor. Greens would have been smoother with acieration holes and sand. Kikuyu has taken over much of the course and it appeared they have tried to dig it out of the greens; the holes filled with sand were much smoother than those that were not filled. On the plus side some interesting holes. A number of drivable par 4’s and all par 5’s are 2 shot holes, makes it a short course with fun risk reward opportunities. Mature trees tighten up most driving lanes. Par 3’s are challenging with the winds and some pins positions are “dangerous”. Many greens do break away from the mountain even when you’d swear that it couldn’t.

Played here for the first time 4/5. I'm thankful for this website (GK) as it warned me that the course was aerating the greens 4/4-4/5. If I book a round I always check here first to see if there are any maintenance alerts. However, my friend had already booked the round. He was annoyed that there was no such maintenance alert on golfnow.

On to the course. The layout is pretty traditional. Tree-lined fairways all throughout. You gotta know where you want to be off the tee and hit the appropriate club. Got to hit lots of different shots, lots of different clubs off the tee. There are quite a few risk/reward holes here.

On the greens putts generally break away from the mountains. Seems like the greens would be pretty nice if they aren't punched and sanded..

There was no marshall to be seen and slow play was throughout. Lots of 5somes. Even saw 2 5somes join and make a 10some! The waiting was frustrating until we passed the group ahead.

Overall the course is enjoyable and interesting. With a few tweaks this course could be really nice. Just needs a couple touches here and there. I'd say check it out in a couple weeks when the greens are back(?) to good shape. Afternoon seemed to clear up and no one was out there so I'd recommend twilight times maybe. Meh, hopefully this is helpful to some people. Cheers

We decided to play here today. Love the layout of this old course in the hills. We had a great POP of 3 hours. New EZGo carts (very nice). Course is in good condition, with lots of green grass and tough rough (there are some bare areas still). Fairways were mowed, clean and provided good lies all round. Tee boxes were clean and could use leveling but they are what they are and playable. Sand traps were filled with sand, but very hard and compact. Rough very high (1/2 inch) outside of fairways. Greens were in good condition (though soft) and putted slowly, except for those with slopes (very fast above the hole). Noticed that many trees did not survive the winter, let alone the drought and there will be many coming down (sad) in the future. Great customer service at check in. While not the most pristine course in the LA County line up, the old fashioned layout (love the par 3's) is one not to miss, just to say you played it.

Played Wed. 3/2 early morning. Got there at daylight and walked right on. This is always a nice course to play. Get there early and you will end up playing solo which is cool, particularly if you’re getting in some practice.

The course is in better shape than I expected. The fairways still had a lot of bare spots but not nearly as bad as I have seen before. There really isn’t any rough but there a hell of a lot of trees. Tee shots need to hit in certain areas as the fairways all run away from the hills that border the course. Tee boxes are beat up but playable. Downside there is the tee boxes are not level.

Greens aren’t great. Were fast but very bumpy and therefore did not roll true. Also, the many deer which roam the course can cause problems on the greens. When they walk across the greens, they leave paw prints which dig deep. #11 is very bad a result of numerous paw prints. These are also the trickiest greens in the area. Unless you’ve played here before you will likely have a few 3 putts. They are very hard to read. I have played here a number of times and know them reasonably well but they still are challenging.

Sand traps are average. Some are hard pan yet some have soft sand.

This is one nicest settings one can play; beautiful trees, wildlife, very quiet, numerous deer roam the course but it is hilly. If you walk, you will get a good workout. The guys in the clubhouse are great and always accommodating.

There are a lot rumors about this place closing and that would be very unfortunate but it doesn’t look like its getting a lot of play. Tee times are always available. I will always look to play here though.

Played 2/27/16. Customer service was friendly. Wildlife everywhere, pretty much saw deer in every direction. Very hilly. The greens were pretty nice, but they were crazy, if you missed a put to the side, it would most likely roll an extra 15ft. The fairways, tee boxes, and rough were fair. Alot of the views were pretty cool, a few tee shots would have a cool background after you hit. Pretty good place to play for the price. So go play it!
