Well after driving by here a few times lately, I saw green and got my hopes up? Be careful of what you wish for? It was just a mirage. I knew they had done the greens, but that was 10 days ago and what I was expecting, was not what I found? The greens are at least 2 weeks from healing (the work appears poor). From the tee boxes (which are clean and level, all of them - good) you see a green fairway? But the fairways are hit/miss with some areas of good grass and grass growing in (causing bad lies) on the whole course. And the back 9 fairways are a "skosh" better than the front, but still not great. Bunkers all appeared good/clean. There are areas of rough, but not difficult to play out of. Customer service was excellent and the price I paid ($11 walking) was great as well. Just sad to see, what once was a "decent" course and maybe at one time a very good course, has now become less than appealing? I hope they are not trying to make M C C the next Victoria (great greens/crappy fairways)? I sincerely hope the City of Montebello is working on improving this course? At this rate, even Whittier Narrows will be a better course?

Longer version- I really hate to kick someone when they're down but what in hell happened to this place?? It's not like it was ever great but it was at least your basic muni with a nice layout and tree lined holes. At least the trees are still standing and the layout hasn't changed, but those are the only good points from my round a couple days ago. I'd agree with everything the previous review stated. Tees were ok with decent coverage. Rough was lush near greens but off the fairways was thin and/or bare. Fairways themselves had some decent areas but quite a few burned out and thin areas too. Greens were atrocious! Many were diseased and so bumpy and slow that you're better off putting with a hybrid just to avoid the plinko boards they call "greens". At least the bunkers provided the highlight of the day. One of my playing partners short sided himself and he hit a high flop that came up short...only to BOUNCE out of the bunker and onto the green to about 5 feet! Can honestly say I've never seen a flop shot bounce out of a bunker and onto a green before!

GK consider this your PSA, don't play MCC until it's been verified that conditions have improved. Just know that I won't be the guinea pig!

Now that twilight starts at Noon and the weather today was comfortable, I went over to get in 18. Course was fairly wide open (though I did play through 2 groups) and ended up covering 18 in under 3 hours. But, I did find the course in much different shape then when I played a few weeks ago? Tee boxes were mowed, but dry and needed water? Fairways had been mowed, but they all looked like the sun had burnt them out? Way to much brown grass for my liking? They did provide good roll, but you could end up with some horrendous lies. The rough outside of the fairways was patchy and full of weeds. Rough around the greens was lush, green and deep? The one trap I was in, was hard crusty dirt? I noticed that many others looked the same way? Greens appeared OK? Many of them appear to have a fungus (maybe like what happened at Los Verdes ?) And they were slow, very slow? Customer service was fine at all levels. But, I think it might be some time before I venture back to play? Perhaps someone else will write a better review, that would motivate me also?

Played today in a great POP of 2.5 hours. Course is in good shape. Tee boxes were clean and level. Fairways were providing decent roll but good lies. Rough is 1/4 inch (IMO) but playable on some (not all) shots. Bunkers need work, as they were hard packed and not loose sand. Greens were good, but a bit slow (compared to putting green) but very playable once you got the speed worked out. Customer service was excellent. With the June gloom we are experiencing, I would expect the course (with proper care) to stay in relatively decent shape over the next many weeks?

Played today in a nice quick pace of 2.5 The course is in very nice shape at present. Tee boxes were clean and playable; fairways were good, with good lies and roll all round; bunkers were raked and appeared (not in any) very playable; rough on outside of fairways and around greens is about 1/2 inch and sticky (like it should be right); greens were in great shape and chipped/putted very well. Customer service excellent. IMO it is in the best shape I have seen the course is some time.

Had a "rain check" scribbled on a business card from my rained out GKCup match. The guy at the counter accepted it without complaint and got me out quickly so I wouldn't have to wait 45 minutes for a small outing to head to the tee. Customer service has been great the last few times here so it seems the days of poor customer service might be over.

Conditions were not the post rainy season lush I had envisioned months ago. Fairways seemed a bit dry and patchy but the rough seemed good. The bunkers I was in were hard with a thin layer of mud on them.

I'm not sure what happened with the greens - it's been like 2 months since being aerated and they still seem to be suffering. Like the group in front of me they were slow and lumpy. It took me two 3 putts to force myself to swing like my putt was traveling through a yard of fringe before heading to the hole.

You can watch the progress of the expansion of the hotel from the 6th tee as you bang an iron through a cloud of dust.

Played 2/28 at twilight. Course has improved greatly (what course has not right) with the rain. Fairways are green and providing great lies, with deep rough on the outside of every fairway. Tee boxes are fine; sand traps are all clean/playable. Greens are in good shape (though did notice some areas of concern on some edges) held shots and putted great with good speed. They did loose many trees throughout the property. Pace of play was very slow on this particular day. Customer service excellent.

We played as a twosome on Saturday, November 19th 2016. We tried to check in about 30 minutes before our tee time but the pro shop wouldn't do it. They said they'd call us. I tried to get him to tell me WHEN they'd call us, because I knew we wouldn't be able to hear it if we were on the driving range, which is all the way on the other side of the parking lot. He wasn't interested in that; he just knew he couldn't take our money yet. Whatever. The gentleman that runs the driving range greeted me with a shocking racist slur. Not directed toward me, but shocking still the same. I didn't acknowledge his quip. After warming up, we headed back to the pro shop to pay and get a cart. Montebello has no problem putting fivesomes out there. However, they didn't have anyone to pair us with, so we played as a twosome, following a threesome and ahead of a fivesome. So, it was a pretty slow round. The course was in just fair shape, overall. The tees were very level but quite gouged up. The fairways were just OK with some bare spots and lies were a crapshoot. The rough was just fairway with longer grass. The greens were the best part of this course, very nice and not too marked up. They ran medium speed but very fun. Bunkers were very firm with not a lot of sand. Fairway bunkers were easy to hit out of but greenside bunkers were iffy as to what kind of lie you would get. There was a drink cart, which was good because as we made the turn, we were informed that the snack bar was closed due to flooding. As we drove past it on our way to the 10th tee, we discovered that the flooding was apparently raw sewage. So, something catastrophic must have happened. Overall, not great but not too bad.

It's been almost 10 years since I have played here and I can understand why. I am not complaining. Ok well I may be a little but for the time of the year and the type of grass I would have expected better coverage in the fairways. Instead I had a bunch of thin lies on more than 5 fairways. Tee boxes are good, level and flat. Bunkers placed in some of the toughest spots -- i.e. landing areas from the tee box so you have to really plan your shots. I enjoyed the fact what you saw is what you got. No surprises just golf but the thin lies in the fairways was a tough pill to swallow especially when you don't have that shot.

Greens rolled true but to a med/slow speed. They did speed up later in the day. Overall I was happy with the conditions except for the fairways but like I said I remember only 5 fairways where the landing areas were on the thin side.

Pace of play was a decent 4 hour round but we were playing behind a walking foursome of seniors and were consistently a hole behind the group ahead of them. Lots of fun holes to play just since the course sits on a hill the grass just doesn't seem to grow along the fairways. Play here again? Perhaps when I can find another deal like this one.
