Played on 5-9-14, 2:00 tee time, POP was 3 hours. I haven't played here in close to two years, and I had played it many times while developing my golf game. I'm now used to much longer courses, and I was somewhat surprised to still find the course challenging despite the extreme shortness of many of the 12 par 3s (the par 4s are short as well). Some of the greens have severe slopes, and several holes have well-placed bunkers which help provide some defense. The fairways are thin, and the sand in the bunkers was crunchy. The views starting on hole 13 are great, and for $20, the round was worth it. More skilled golfers will probably be bored by this course, despite the views, but for those taking up the game, the course may prove the gateway to a more expansive golf game and experience.

A golf buddy was looking to get out yesterday, Wednesday, 5/7 with the possibility of getting 18 in somewhere. On GofNow, he found a 2:45 special at Scholl for $9 per person and included a cart(!). While I sometimes hit the range there, I have only played there once before and it had been years, but for less than the cost of a large bucket we were in for the change of pace. Because it is an executive course with only a handful of par fours, the greens figure that much more prominently. While visual traces of aeration remained, there were no practical issues and the greens were a highlight—fairly quick and rolled smooth. Overall,they are pretty challenging, frequently with a lot of angles and/ or slope to them to combine with the quick pace. Bunkers were on the firm side but short of hard. On the par fours, the fairways were quite serviceable, generally covered but with tight, frequently dry lies with a lot of roll. I didn't have the same issues with the tee boxes as the previous reviewer. Maybe they were situated differently on the day, but I don't much recall problems with coverage or un-level lies. Rough varied but was generally OK. For what it is, it is a surprisingly challenging course. Course knowledge makes a difference because there are a number of holes where you can't really see the putting surface or bunkers guarding the green. A key feature of this location is the view you get of LA and the surrounding area from various vantage points on the course—particularly the further elevated back nine holes. It's really rather unique, impressive and cool. It is highly unlikely I would play Scholl at full price, but that's just me. I very rarely play executive courses. For the bargain rate, it was a no-brainer to revisit it. We got around at a brisk pace with little waiting and I enjoyed it. Find a day that's not too busy, get a discounted rate and go at least once—you'll probably lose some balls but check out that view while you are looking for them.

Fairways were pretty good and the greens were interesting. Quite a few big greens, but they were really slow. The course was moving slow, so I had to leave the 2 guys that he paired me up with (they were 2 really good guys, I just had to leave soon so I wanted to finish up). The main problem that I had with this course is the severely uneven and sloped tee boxes! Who puts a tee box on the side of a hill so the ball is way above your feet? Apparently, Scholl Canyon does.

Played Friday 8/9 mid-day. $14 golfnow rate. Well worth it considering I usually just play Penmar (nine holes) for same price. Similar to Westchester - 18 hole executive par 3 course with a few par 4s thrown in. Good place to work the wedges / short game. Conditions are good - typical muni or American Golf - everything is acceptable except the tee boxes, which were rough, uneven in spots and chewed up. For $14 (with cart) I can't complain too much. 2.45 hour pace. Nice views, some stunning, of the city. Never played this one because it's a slog across town with the traffic, but I'll be back for sure. Recommend. Side note: We played the front 9 with a very sweet, elderly lady who had two prosthetic legs. Quite an inspiration on a sunny California day.

Haven't played here in a long time and overall conditions are better than they used to be but still needs TLC (although it is clear they have put some money into the place). For the good: tee box on 1 has been leveled so you are not hitting your first shot of the day with your right foot at the same height as your left knee, so that is helpful. Also, they leveled and resurfaced the two most chronically settled greens on the front nine which were #7 & 9. So those are now actually playable again! Looked like #7 tee had been re-done sometime too.

Fairways were a bit thin and burnt in spots but they were very wet in the morning so you can tell they are trying to maintain them - they are way better than they used to be (but it's not a big deal either way as only a few holes have fairways you might use). About 60% of the tees need to be leveled. The greens were slower than molasses and bumpy/soft but with nice grass coverage - looks like they had been double-verticut recently too. Sand was actually very nice and fluffy/deep for a muni.

The bad: the main problem here is not with the course (you get what you pay for) - but with your fellow golfers. The place seems to attract the worst of all worlds - clueless hackers. A brief summary of what to expect although I am sure you all know the drill. Holding play up by hitting off someone else's fairway while the group on that hole is waiting for you. Slow groups who fall several holes behind and don't give a d___ (same people who do 50 in the fast lane and see nothing but clear skies ahead while the rest of humanity piles up behind them I suspect). Means that you take 4+ hours to play a 3000 yard muni executive course. Fresh pitch-marks galore on each and every green. I gave up after fixing about 6-7 per hole.

If it's quiet it's a nice wee place to hit different sorts of shots - if it's busy then it can be frustrating to witness the shenanigans going on. Kudos to the management for sinking some money back into the place.

Played out here yesterday with our LA Golf Group. We had fun with our 3-club format and even a few brave souls trying to earn extra points by playing with only 1 or 2 clubs. This course is a good layout for this kind of format, but as previous reviewers stated the conditions are pretty poor. The greens are OK. They were very firm and fast and there are no flat spots on any of them. The pins were especially tough yesterday, making putting circus-like on several holes. The bunkers were pretty poor and a lot of the little rocks and larger sand pieces from them were scattered all over the greens, as well. Tee boxes were pretty horrible. Fairways firm, fast and dormant. Rough was pretty shaved down, as well, and pretty patchy throughout. Lots of extra rollout here, but that made things tougher because balls would easily roll into trouble or run off of the greens. For $18 to walk on a Saturday, it is what it is as a cheap muni executive track. One positive is the great views of the city throughout the course!

Played with the Meetup/LAGolfGroup 3-club event on Sunday. This is a small par 60 course. It appears that there is a distinct lack of t.l.c. given to many parts of the course. The greens were decent: fast and mostly smooth. However, there were a lot of ball marks and related ball mark damage from old, unrepaired ball marks. In addition, the pins were placed in very difficult positions on the greens, making putting almost comical at times. One pin (hole 11) was placed about two paces from the back, at the top of a steep slope. My group had a couple of guys hit five putts each on this par three. The tee boxes are narrow and longish, allowing for many different placements from front to back. Unfortunately, they are almost all unlevel. Fairways and rough are mostly dormant bermuda and kikuyu, thin, with many bare areas. On hole 9, a good tee shot rolled backward down the fairway because it was so thin. Sand was thin and brown. Typical of muni courses in the L.A. area. The price was right: we paid $18 to walk on a weekend. The pro shop person was nice enough.

Played twilight on Sunday 2/24 with the GK LA Golf League 3 Club Monte Event, although I only played with my pitching wedge, which is almost enough to get around this short little par 60 course with. Most of the 12 Par 3's are pitching wedge length.
The greens are madness here, some holes are more devious than others, where a putt that almost goes in will roll back past you for another longer putt. I swear at least one hole was on a downhill.
The grass on the course is pretty much crap, but nowhere near as bad as the tee boxes. These are utter pieces of crap, most had little to no grass and many without flat lies, just mounds of dirt really.
Layout is fun for a limited club event, and would be the only reason I'd go back here.

played on 2-16 saturday twilight. Found a tee time for 11 bucks with cart around 330 pm. This course is pretty much hackers paradise. Balls flying everywhere. Always i fun course to practice the short game and its always fun to drive the green on the short par 4's. Surprisingly the greens were faster than most high handicappers can handle. Pace of play really slow. Scholl canyon probably has the best views in the Los Angeles area. You could see the ocean on clear days.
