Played on 12/2 with Mr. Kich and some new to golf friends on a windy day. Scholl should be a nice place for a relative beginner in that none of the holes are very long and things move decently well.

Greens were both the highlight and the lowlight of this course. They ran smooth and on the faster end of medium. There were a few bare areas and obviously a lot of unrepaired ball marks. The starter mentioned off the cuff that some of the pins were in tricky spots. That was an understatement. The pin locations were absolute jokes. On multiple holes, it was physically impossible to putt your ball and have it stop within 5-10 feet of the hole. For example on 10, the pin was back left on the ridge. I hit 4 putts (FOUR!!) up the hill 3 feet past the hole and each one rolled back 15-20 feet.

Fairways don't come in to play much, except on a few holes. They were fall/winter thin with some decent lies to be had.

Rough is practically nonexistent.

Tee boxes had lots of divots, which is to be expected on a short course. However, they were severely sloped which made it hard to get a level stance.

Sand was actually really nice. Slight crunch to the top layer and plush sand underneath.

I enjoy a shorter, quick course to work on my irons and short game. Scholl SHOULD be the place, but the combination of the unfortunate tee boxes, trash pin positions, minigolf holes on the back, and insanely overpriced range ($10 for a "medium" bucket?!?) mean I probably won't be back unless I'm really jonesing and can't get on anywhere else.

Played out here on Saturday afternoon in 3 1/2 hours. Course is an executive of 3000 +- yards. Took over 4 hours if you count when our tee time was supposed to be. They had apparently run out of carts but all their times online come with carts.

Tee boxes were not the flattest but could always find a flat place to tee off from where the tees were placed. Fairways had grass on them and pretty short. A few places where coverage was spotty. Rough wasn't penalizing at all and coverage was even more spotty. San traps were playable with maybe an inch of brown colored sand. Greens had been aerated not long ago but mostly recovered. About the only maintenance they seem to care about besides mowing the grass.

Overall the course works for what it is, a bunch of hackers, who are enjoying a leisurely afternoon with amazing views from downtown to Santa Monica. Does not appear to have a lot of the greens fees being put back into the facility. Would make an amazing high end pitch and putt if they really wanted to gussy up the place.

Driving range was hitting off the grass. If you're looking for grass definitely call over and see if it's grass everyday or what days it is. They also do the Players Club so $30 a month for 2 buckets of balls a day. If it was closer to the freeway I'd be there all the time for that.

Noticed while practicing on the putting green that it was punched. A lot of greens were punched on the course -- not all. But those that were punched, made your balls roll a little slower. The punched holes were very big and had a lot of sand. Felt like putting in a sand box on some holes. The fairways had a lot of bare spots. Not fun hitting off dirt patch. The lies were getting a little thin on the fairways. A lot of the tee boxes were not level. Love the views on some of the holes on the back 9.

Like playing here to practice your short game. The par 4 holes are not that long.

Played in a two-man scramble tournament at Scholl today at 7am. Brutal. Besides fact it was 40 degrees when play started, conditions did little to make the $50 entry fee seem even remotely justified. I played Scholl once when I first started playing golf, so I was anxious to see it again with a more keen eye. Well, that's now stink eye.

Besides the impressive views of the LA basin, there's simply not much reason in terms of actual golf to come here. The first hole is now an abbreviated 100 yard pitch into a hole in the middle of the dirt fairway. After that, you're greeted with more sad looking fairways, thin bunkers with as many rocks as dirt, rough comprised of more dirt, and tee boxes that would make a carpenter's level hurl.

The greens are the short course's defense of course, but they're chock full of ball marks and usually on such ridiculous slopes that it's more about luck than skill. Even ones that you get close just roll away into oblivion. And the layout (especially the back 9) is a tricked out mess.

In summary, glad I came back as now I'll remember there's no need to ever come back again.

Played here today, 4/25 as part of a tournament. Like playing here to get some practice in. It's not an easy course to play especially the back 9.

Played here today, 4/25 as part of a tournament. Like playing here to get some practice in. It's not an easy course to play especially the back 9.

We didn't start on time but we tee off about 10 minutes past our scheduled tee time. Course conditions were ok for this time of year. Grass was a combination of yellow and green (more yellow and with a lot of bare spots). Fairways were very dry. Balls seems to roll a lot more than usual with the dry conditions. You can tell the fairways were still recovering from being punched. Greens were in great condition for this time of year. The bunkers tend to be hard packed. Plus while we were playing it had rained, so the course was getting a little soggy.

Love the views from the course. You can see downtown LA and century city from a lot of holes and from some of the holes on the back 9. Playing back 9 is always a challenge especially holes number 13, 14 and 15. You can lose a lot of balls on these holes.

This is not a flat course. You have uphill shots as well as downhill shots. It's a great course to work on your game!

My fourth time here in the last 15 years; including the three times in the last three years with our league. If not for this three-club event, I probably would not bother to come here at all. If the course were more local to me it might be a different story. Probably a good place to work on your short game, if you don't mind crowds. Generally poor course conditions, save for the greens. Those were soft and steeply sloped, making for quite the challenge. Unfortunately, the practice green has no severe slope to it. Fairways and rough were thin, dry, and steeply sloped (like everything else around here), so balls have a way of rolling into trouble. This course was built on top of a landfill and it shows. Some fairways appear to have slid a bit in the last few years. They are still filling to the southeast of the course. Maybe some day this will be a bigger course. Anyway, I hate to bash too much, so I will say that given what they have to work with, the greens crew has done a fine job keeping that portion of the course fairly nice.

Played out here today with the LA Golf Group. GK'ers kviser and Mattias were in my 10:00 group along with Brian, who will hopefully join the site soon. The course had a big scramble shotgun this morning and that was still finishing up amidst other groups going out ahead of us. We teed off probably closer to 10:30, but the on-course pace was OK once that shotgun finished. Total pace of around 3.5 hours I think. $23 walking rate.

The course was in typical winter condition. Some tee boxes were okay and others were pretty bad. Fairways tight and dormant with lots of roll-out (usually into trouble). Rough cut down and not much of a factor. I was in a few bunkers and the sand was generally good. The greens were a bit bumpy in places, but mostly decent. Didn't seem to roll as fast as the other times I've been here, but still pretty slick on anything downhill. These greens are always tricky and there were a handful of really nasty pin placements today.

This is always a fun executive course with mediocre conditioning and some great views of LA from up on the hill. With the Golf Group, this is always our "3 Club Monte" outing where we can only use 3 total clubs (putter counts as one of the clubs). That always makes this course even more interesting, especially on the back nine with some tricky holes along the canyon.

FULL DISCLOSURE - I have worked at this course since 1998, working currently as a independent contractor Golf Instructor. I will do a slightly longer review of this course. Yes, I have worked here since 1998 as an Ambassador, Starter and now an instructor. Over the years the course has seen some changes, most recently a few greens and tee boxes were leveled. Quite a lot of money was put into the course to make these improvements. I would say the course is the best condition I have ever seen. The current manager/superintendent have been doing a great job of keeping the course up. Tee Times - call or use Golfzing.com. Usually plenty of tee times available, Scholl Canyon gets a fair amount of 'walk-ups'. Plenty of parking, as it is extremely rare that the lot gets full even with multiple tournaments going on. There are also 10 tennis courts for rent, some have recently been resurfaced. Pro Shop/Snack Bar - has everything that you would need, but not golf clubs. Good deals on shoes at 50% off clearing out models from last year. Prices are just average beyond sale prices. Snack bar with grill can make basic sandwiches, hot dogs etc. A couple TV's to watch golf or sports. Tee boxes - several were recently leveled. This is one of my pet peeves, I hate tee boxes that are uneven. Scholl had this issue for many years as it is built on a landfill and the ground has been sliding around for many years. It seems to have stopped for the most part in most areas. Overall the tee boxes are in good condition. Fairways - they are pretty normal for the LA area, sometimes they brown up when it gets hot. Some people don't under stand that is can be hard to keep water in areas that are hilly depending on the type of grass. The water is also very expensive, so course that might not be making a lot of money might cut water rather quickly. But Scholl is usually pretty good except during the summer for a couple months. Greens - again, several were recently leveled as they were getting too steep in several spots. The speed and quality of these greens is quite good on average. Saturday morning they are usually running 10+ There is a driving range where they hit off of grass MOST every Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday. Mats on the other days. Call the course to ensure that the grass range is open. The practice bunker was recently removed as a management decision, so there is no longer a practice bunker on the range. There is a putting green that is near the first hole, usually representative of the speed of the greens. Scholl is in the hills and there are some really nice views up there. On a normal day, you can see the ocean near Santa Monica. On clearer days, you can see the water/ships/cranes in San Pedro Long Beach area. Maybe twice in my life I have seen a 'water line' of the ocean near Malibu, but that is a long ways away and extremely rare to see that far. Go up there after the wind blows all of the smog away and you will see some nice views. The course is a par 60 executive course, no par 5's. It does have 6 par 4's and the rest are 3's. If the course isn't slow, a two-some can play in under two hours sometimes. Almost always rounds are less than 4 hours as the course is shorter. A good course for everyone, the front nine is pretty easy and the back nine is more challenging running through the hills and is quite narrow in some spots. Since I was in the valley playing Angeles National, I thought I'd stop here on the way home to check it out, as I have never played here before. Got to the course about 9:30 and walked right to the tee. Played two balls and zipped around until I caught a group of ladies on #15. Since the back side is rather a tough walk, I decided just to play behind them and relax as I was a bit tired at this point. I really liked this course! It was in decent condition, and actually offers a few challenges along the way. (Some tight driving holes on the back nine, and some of the greens were a challenge if you got above the pin) The views were incredible. Just had a good time playing here and except for the walk from 11 to 12, very enjoyable. Even waiting the last four hole, and playing two balls, was able to finish in about 2 hours
