Since it’s my first review I’ll start with a background of myself. Over the past six years, I have been fortunate enough to play more than 200 different golf courses and close to 2,300 rounds, although not all of them were full 18 hole rounds. Safe to say, I have experienced the full spectrum of golf course operations, from excellent to disappointing. Unfortunately, this course is the first and only one I have ever placed on my never playing again list. While the course itself has several positives, ongoing issues with management and the overall atmosphere ultimately outweigh them for me. I have played this course for years, and this review is based solely on my personal experiences. It is not intended to degrade individual staff members or discourage others from playing here, but rather to provide an honest assessment. From a design standpoint, the course layout is very enjoyable and consistently challenging, particularly off the tee. Playing from the tips, the course initially appears to favor long hitters, with flat terrain and what seems like generous space on both sides of the fairway. However, mature trees line nearly every hole and heavily protect the approach shots into the greens. Even shots that are not severely offline often leave no clear look at the green. While there are a few opportunities to recover, accuracy off the tee is critical, as par is difficult to make if you are not consistently finding fairways. Water comes into play on a handful of holes, but nothing feels overly punishing. The greens present a different challenge altogether. Many holes feature large green complexes that can be difficult to read, especially if you are unfamiliar with them. Local knowledge goes a long way when it comes to scoring. To put it into perspective, during one round I hit 13 of 18 greens in regulation and finished with just one birdie, which came on the first hole, along with four three putts (yikes!). It was a humbling reminder of how demanding these greens can be. Course conditions are about what you would expect for a city park course. They are not pristine, but not terrible either. At times the course can feel overwatered, and the greens often become bumpy later in the day due to the heavy amount of daily play. Unfortunately, the primary reason I will not return has nothing to do with the course itself. The pro shop staff, the general manager, and the overall atmosphere they have created have made the experience consistently unpleasant. Without going into excessive detail, the management style feels overly distrustful and unnecessarily restrictive. Policies such as refusing refunds when no shows are replaced from a waitlist, not allowing single players to go out even during empty late afternoons, and having a marshal closely monitor pace of play when the course is wide open all contribute to an unwelcoming environment. These practices, combined with frequent micromanagement, make it difficult to enjoy what should be a relaxing round of golf. It is disappointing, because the course has real potential. However, based on my repeated experiences, I have decided I am done playing here. There are simply too many other courses where both the golf and the overall experience are more enjoyable.

Played on 12/10 in 80 degree weather. The course is in really good condition after the November rain and warm sunny days. The fairways we're in really good condition except for all the unfilled divots. As usual the greens were nice, they were pretty firm and fast. Overall a good experience. I should also add that the new carts are equipped with great new GPS monitors.

Played MSQ on 12/12/14. Fairways / Rough / Traps all in very good shape for a muni. Greens were quite good, smooth and quick, but not too quick. Surprisingly, not an ocean of ball marks on greens. Need to add this one back onto my bargain rotation, it was a fun day.

Highly recommended.

Still sad to see the Players course remnants out there, with nobody at all using the new park facilities.

Many tee boxes need improvement and are in bad condition but the fairways, rough and sand traps were all in good condition.

As Previous review mentioned, the previously best greens in Orange County are now a ttrain wreck! Looks like a fungus issue post aeration. Greens are bumpy,sandy, with frequent bare spots. It’s just ... Continue »

As Previous review mentioned, the previously best greens in Orange County are now a ttrain wreck! Looks like a fungus issue post aeration. Greens are bumpy,sandy, with frequent bare spots. It’s just a luck of the draw once you get on the putting green. The fairways, traps, and two boxes are all in better than average shape.. Hopefully they get the greens under control.

I have been playing Mile Square for about 15 years now and I average about 50 rounds per year, I lovingly call it my home course. This year, April 2024, MSP aerated their greens as usual, but the healing process is nothing less than atrocious! The best greens in OC are now the worst! Two months after the aeration, the greens now have dead spots which, I think, is related to some sort of fungal issue. Anyway, it is really difficult to write this review, it is my hope that it puts some pressure on the course to improve the quality of the greens. I look forward to going back but I think it will take some time to remedy the current issues.

Very late review. Got out to Mile Square with a high school buddy on Friday, 2/23/24 at 1:40pm. I was late to look at the MS site so only late times (unable to finish) available. Saw GKer NutNButCup’s review playing a few days after I did and reiterate his observations – good greens rolling at medium speed, course still pretty wet after all the rain we had and so good fairway coverage but little roll-out. Sand damp and heavy but in good condition. Tees were in rough shape and needed to be cut. Rough was generally pretty short but could get juicy farther off the line of play and under the trees.

Greens showed lots of old and new ballmarks. Play jammed up on each of the par-3s, with 2 or 3 groups waiting on each of those tees. Overall pace was slow and front side took 2.5 hr; we finished hole 14 at around the 4-hour mark and packed it in in the fading light. Still recommended.

Walked on Tuesday early Tuesday teeing off about 6:45 finishing in 3:45. Aside from a couple of small roped off wet areas the course drained really well from the previous weeks rains. The greens rolled smooth with medium+ speed and held shots. The fairways had good coverage with nice lies to hit from. The rough along the fairways has good coverage. Among the trees there can be some thin/bare spots. The length of rough definitely affected shots (especially in the early morning wet) but was not overly penal. The bunkers appeared to be well groomed and in good playing condition. I was in only one good conditioned fairway bunker but my playing partners had no complaints of the greenside bunkers. The tee boxes had decent coverage and are mildly unlevel.

I wish this course would allow singles to book online when a threesome and/or twosome has booked into a tee time. I would play here more often if I didn't need to show up and get on the wait list. The staff was friendly.

Played mid morning a week after all the rain and the course is in excellent condition and had dried out nicely. The fairways were the best I've seen and were mown tight, the greens were in really good condition and ran at moderate speed. Even the sand traps were dried out and in really good condition. Had a great experience and would highly recommend.
