The layout was okay.. the greens were tough!.. it was $57 for a saturday morning.. I guess because its the weekend i was okay with paying that much.. but if it wasn't the weekend I wouldn't pay that much.. POP was decent for how busy they were.. I just wasn't impressed with the course.. but it was still a fun round with the buds.

Played 2/25 at 12:25 with Nickesquire, Jeff & Mark. Nick covered the conditions very well, as usual. I'll add that they win my vote for the ugliest tree in the fairway on 10 (I think). After having a day to think about it, I'll say it was a different course. I didn't care for groups 3 deep lined up to tee off in the small area around the first tee and the blue tee on No. 1 looking like an unpermitted bedroom addition. Most of the time you're routed through houses, usually there was enough of buffer, but in some instances you're trying not to look into someone's living room. The front side had many "ant hill" greens, most much bigger than they look from below. There were two shorter holes with Phil Spector walls of bunkers to protect them. This is a course with quite a few memorable holes, thinking back, however as a course SJ doesn't really flow to me, it's a collection of holes you don't see on most courses that aren't especially connected. Some are fine holes and some not so much. That said, it was fun. There were holes I'd love to play again. SJ could be like a Neil Young album, if you can stand to listen to it three or four times, you love it start to finish. I'll definitely play it again, but right now there are only a couple songs I really like. Thanks for the fun, Nick.

Played the Blues (6317/70.5/127) using Forelinx in 4H, 50M. Played as a 4some with Mark, Jeff & 140ver. Thanks for lunch & meeting up Mike! The weather was clear & a little breezy in the 70's. Par 71, somewhat quirky layout. Some 90 degree doglegs and some holes with fairly severe elevation changes. Hilly, tight but a fun course overall. Most tees were fairly lush, but several could use leveling. Excellent job by the greens staff of maintaining the old divots, almost all were already filled in. The kikuyu fairways were winter thin with decent coverage. However, there were many clearly defined GUR spots that were usually bare spots. At best average. The kikuyu rough had decent coverage for a grass and weed mixture in the winter. Not overly long but can still be penal because it's kikuyu. The traps were decently maintained with good sand but had inconsistent depths. The greens looked like a bent/poa annua mixture. Fairly smooth, not overly firm but medium fast & held approach shots well. A few had some bare areas around the outside edges. However, they were decent overall and putted better than they looked. Good customer service, quick efficient check-in and the Player Assistant was out patrolling. The beverage cart was out and making the rounds several times. The GPS on carts is to the front, middle and back of the green only. This would be a challenging course to walk, up/down hills and it cuts through tunnels several times as it meanders trough residential areas. Recommended = Yes if you want to be challenged by a quirky/hilly layout.

Played out here today using Forelinx with a 10:00 tee time. Expected it to be pretty empty due to the morning rain, but it was packed out there. Started just a couple minutes late and POP was around 4:45. Thankfully pace was pretty consistent; no long delays in any one spot. Saw the beverage cart on the 8th hole but not again. Oddly, the snack bar at the turn had no prepared food, just snack foods and beverages.

Conditions are surprisingly good! The greens are very good, fast, smooth and soft due to the rain. I haven't played here too many times, but I'm beginning to sense that the grain is strong toward the low-lying spots of San Juan, sort of toward the Mission when you can see it on the front nine. Putts headed that direction were extremely fast. Full shots stopped very quickly while chips ran out a bit. The fairways are quite good relative to other muni-level courses currently. Good coverage for the most part, a mixture of grasses mostly consisting of kikuyu and bermuda. I wouldn't call them lush, but they're better than most of the super thin fairways I've played recently. All bare areas were sprayed as GUR, which is always nice. Rough was a little spottier than the fairways, but not terrible. Bunkers were a little wet and slightly compacted due to the rain; they could all use a good raking, but the sand quality seemed pretty good otherwise. Tee boxes were excellent, although No. 1 was a little shaggy compared to the rest. Overall, the course handled the overnight rain very well.

The normal prices here typically keep me away because there are better options elsewhere for the money, but with Forelinx I'm very happy to play here. Good layout with lots of elevation changes, interesting holes and the conditions right now are quite good.

Some dormant, some green, some dead Rough mostly dormant and thin Greens rolled at a medium fast pace with lots of brake on many holes. They were firm and bumpy. Interesting mix with many dog legs and sloping fairways. Course knowledge very helpful.

01/20 0830 tee time off on time pop 4 1/2 hrs minimal waiting mostly on the par 3s pretty good for winter conditions fairways had some thin spots but also many areas were grown in and set up nicely. the greens are in really good shape and rolled consistently medium fast and as usual were tricky to read with quite a bit of break--- just stay below the hole. tee boxes were good with only #14 being thin and crowned. sand was soft and heavy. customer service was good. we booked on line for $35 thru the course web site sign up for their emails and there are even better rates and specials

I've been playing SJH quite a bit lately, usually around 4pm during the week so my review might not be applicable to you. I keep going back because I'd rather play golf than hit range balls. SJH is pretty awesome when it's not busy. The course is decent, and it's usually empty when I'm there. The greens on the front nine are in good shape considering that most people don't fix marks, and tend to drag their feet. The tee boxes are kinda beat up, but you should be able to find a flat lie. Fairways are not good, but the maintenance staff at least makes an attempt to mark "ground under repair".

FWIW~This place can get very busy during peak hours. Don't play Saturday or Sunday in the morning/early afternoon unless you're prepared for a 5+ hour round.

Date played: 9/25/2015 @ 3:00 pm I didn't expect a round where we didn't wait and flew through the course, but my God San Juan Hills, get your crap together. First off, the two employees I encountered, the pro shop cashier and the starter, need to take a course on customer service. I understand the starter needs to get people out on the course, but have some manners and act like you want to be there at least a little bit. It frustrates me because the starter is pushing people out to stay "on time", but then all the people do is sit on the course. There were no marshals out there, no one cared about pace. The front 9 took 3 hours and 10 minutes, after that, we just turned and played 1 - 5 again. Have some respect for yourselves and don't stack people out on the course. The first par 5 took 35 minutes to play and we almost were hit on the fly by a ball from the group behind us. This place is a joke. Only decent thing on the course were the greens, and even then, too many lazy people who don't fix anything. Sorry, but I have nothing good to say about SJH.

Played this AM in a nice POP of 3.5 hours. Course was very wet most of the morning (they have their own well/recycled source) allowing very little run in the fairways and soft greens. But you always had a good lie. Actually the course seemed over watered, but hey I am not the superintendent either? But the course was green, that is for sure. Tee boxes were clean and tee friendly. Bunkers looked a little wet but heard no complaints. Rough was high and wet and difficult to play out of. While the greens were some what damp, they rolled and putted well? I did see a lot of old ball marks most of the morning (not much effect on putting) which tells me most players who play here are lazy or don't know how to properly repair a divot (most likely lazy)? Customer service was excellent at all levels. The food in the 19th bar/grill was excellent. And they will still serve you a beer at the price of the lowest score on the card (nice idea). Look for great deals during the week from their email blasts, for those signed up.
