Played August 14th with a friend (not a good golfer, but a good friend). Got a great afternoon rate, course was wide open (probably due to the heat). Course is in very good shape with only a couple exceptions – some bunkers are a little thin and/or crusty on top, and a couple tees are pretty worn (as noted in a prior review, #4 is at the top of this list). There are some bare spots, but didn't find any in the middle of the fairways. Still a great course, especially if you can get a discounted rate. Greens a little slow compared to other visits but again, probably due to extra water because of the high temps. Very receptive to good shots, and rolled true. Several pins were tucked in some nasty places, but others were fairly easy to get at so it all balanced out. Good company + good course = great day!

The course is in great shape and I would say that nothing has changed from jayman369's review from a week and a half ago. Tee boxes were good apart from a few that were a bit beat up (#4 comes to mind) but there was plenty of room to find a lush spot. Fairways were very good and the rough was not as penal as I've seen in the past. Greenside bunkers do need a little bit of sand but the fairways bunkers were nice and firm. Although they may not look like it, the greens are in good shape. They are slower than I usually see them, but they still roll true and shots around the greens were checking like crazy.

In my opinion it's one of the best layouts in Southern California for a very reasonable price. The only problem is that it's so far away! Still highly recommended though.

After a short hiatus from golf, I went back and played Oak Valley this past weekend. The course was in very good shape. This is one of my favorite tracks and it's never crowded (maybe I've been lucky). Tee boxes were level and had very little damage. Fairways were lush and well maintained. Bunkers could use more sand, but were very playable. The greens were not as fast as they normally are at Oak Valley, but they were undamaged and rolled true. Weather was beautiful. Warm but not unbearable, with only a light breeze. There were a couple of hole in the front 9 where you're next to the freeway and you can hear the noise. It didn't bother me. Pace of play was just over 4 hours for a relaxed round. This is just a beautiful course with a couple of holes that are Pete Dye-esque (#11, #16). I would definitely play here more often if it weren't so far from me.

As a first timer here, I witnessed an amazing example of architecture and innovation of design while truly enjoying hitting each shot. Quite the vistas from everywhere of surrounding mountains and hills (ok a few houses too). May 13, 2pm, Shazza and I had the pleasure of teeing it up with Addictedtugolf and Gadgetgirl; such a pleasant afternoon. Nice staff throughout, good prac-fac, all grass range. Most on course grasses are lush, with a mixture this time of year of bermuda, rye and even poa. Tees are very 'experienced', with sparse areas to find good footing (white tees). Fairways were quick (2pm), mown nicely and easy to hit from, and lots of filled divots. Rough was lush rye, and varied in length all over the course with a few bare patches. The bunkers I was in today were good, for the most part, but there were some sizable pebbles in a lot of them. The greens complexes are inviting and pleasing to look at. Perfectly manicured approaches and collars, with the designing of classic Curley/Schmidt contouring and lurking danger. Soft enough to hold a shot, medium to fast pace with bumps and lots of un-repaired ball marks. Reading them was quite tricky due to the mixed salad of grasses displaying various shades of green. I loved the layout for the 4+20 that we played, was thankful for the ample water stations (no drinks cart today), and grateful to addicted for his guidance around the course. It's always a real treat coming out to Oak Valley. I drive 91 miles to the course, try to play 36 and beat the traffic back to Hermosa and the pro's are always willing to work with me to let me go off first so I can get teh first 18 in quick. Great guys. Great attitude.
This fine morning it was pretty foggy, so the first 9 holes were done by sonar (thud! yep! that sounded like the green......woosh! nope, that's the rough....etc) memory and the little guide book.
Course was in great shape as ever. Greens slower than I imagined (around 9?) but true as they can be. The course is a magnificent, thinking golfers design. Room to hit, but you have to be careful. Wonderful, graceful elevation changes (not cliffs) and some wicked pin placements.

Finished my 36 by 12.45 and off I went...home by 2pm. Great day out.

Pros- This course was almost perfect today. Greens rolled great, probably around 10.5 or so on the scale. Fairways were very lush and the course has greened out a ton since I last played. Rough was fairly sticky but was totally playable. Staff is friendly and pace of play was 3.5 hours.
Cons- Could use another 1/2 inch in the only bunker I was in... Pretty nit-picky if you ask me.
Overall- Love it... its a long drive, but worth a play this time of year and will play 4 times a year.

Played Oak Valley last week for the first time in a few years. This place has really kicked my behind in the past when my game wasn't very good. Warning...high handicappers should stay away. Oak Valley is just a beautiful, rugged, and demanding golf course. Tee boxes, fairways, and greens are in great shape and the course is lined with mature trees and lots of trouble if you don't find the fairways. The first two holes are short par 4s that are relatively easy. The 3rd is a dramatic, downhill par 3 that plays two clubs less (if no wind), and the course just gets tougher, and tougher the rest of the way. The greens are large but most have multiple tiers, lots of undulation, and often have tricky pin placements. If you find yourself on the wrong tier, you will do well to two putt. The layout is one of the best I've played. Water only comes into play on a few holes (par 3 11th, 16 and 17), but no two holes are alike and lots of variety with elevation changes, and mounded fairways. Some holes like #7 leave very little room for error from the tee or on approach shots. All of the staff are great and there are active marshals that do their best to keep slow groups keeping pace of play. Our foursome finished in 4.5 hours. Would have been a faster round but the group ahead of us were high handicaps playing from the blues (7000yds). My only other gripe is that the sand traps were very firm. I highly recommend Oak Valley. It is a great test of golf if you have a decent game.

Played Sunday A.M. pace was 3 hours. course was excellent. Worth the drive to play a PGA style course. Snow in the mountains looks awesome. Greens are in tournament condition, just a little soft from the rain. The sand wet from rain, but still played nicely. Fairways good as any I have played this time of the year. Go play.
