Took a "sick day" yesterday to go out and support the CBU baseball team in their annual alumni golf outing. I try not to miss this event each year as it is awesome to see some of the guys and catch up on old times.

This year we played at Canyon Crest Country Club. I had played this course one time in the past so I kinda of knew what to expect with the course. If you like traditional, old school golf courses, then this is the place for you. Some of the holes are tree lined (as you would expect with an older course) while other holes are lined with homes. The course pretty much flat so I think this would not be too difficult of a course to walk. There are a few holes on the back 9 that will make you out of breath though so beware of that.

The greens were outstanding. The were as smooth as glass and rocket fast compared to come of the courses I have been playing recently. A missed putt here could not be blamed on the course conditions. I think the greenskeeper was in a bit of a bad mood that morning though because most of the pins were in some pretty tough areas.

The fairways were in pretty decent shape. The all had good coverage. We were playing a scramble format so we were able to pick out lies but, for the most part, I don't think there were too many bad lies to be had out there.

The rough was a little rough. It was patchy and really wet in most areas. Some of the holes were just simply mud on the outer edges. The middle of the course is in a bit of a drainage area so I am not sure if it was still trying to dry out from the recent rains or if it was just from over watering. Either way, we did have a few shots from the rough and in some areas, we struggled to find some good areas to hit from within a club length.

We were in one greenside bunker on #2 and the sand was great. I cannot comment on any other bunkers on the course but visually, they all looked to be in about the same condition.

All in all, a fun day on the course. Personally, this is not my favorite type of golf course but that is just my preference. Others may love the old school feel and layout. I would come back and play again. I would definitely recommend that you give this course a try if you are invited (this is a fully private club, afterall).

Rode the Greens (6524/72.0/128) in 3.5H as a single mid day. Weather was in the 70's, breezy and clear. Old school private course that is tight and pretty straight forward. The holes cris cross roads in a nice, upper middle class housing track. The layout sits down in a valley and is set on rolling hills. It opened in 1968 and was probably a fantastic club back in the day. COVID-19: Masks only required when around people. Cups had a pvc insert that still let the ball go in. Water stations closed. Tees mostly lush with few unfixed divots. Fairways mostly kukuyu with good coverage. Rough a mixture of grasses. Not high but tough to consistently get good club on the ball. Sand traps were the only part not above average. They had mediocre sand and even though raked, looked more like sand traps on a muni than a private club. Greens were excellent. Nice to be able to hit high irons in and have them stop right beside the ball mark. Medium fast and smooth. No tiers, but they had a deceptive amount of break. Customer service was excellent. Friendly pro shop and cart staff and the drink cart was around probably 5 times. Driving range is uphill and was off mats today. Nice but dated facilities, they have a full sized pool that reminds me of private clubs when I was a kid 50 years ago. #12 they had a flood that damaged the fairway, so a long par 4 became a medium par 3 while the fairway was GUR. Recommended.

Played yesterday 4/26 at 1pm finishing in just under 4 hours on a beautiful day. The course is rough around the edges, and something tells me the quarantine had little to do with it. Conditions were mixed to poor, but the layout was interesting and staff was exceptionally courteous.
Tees: Just ok, mainly level but lots of divot damage. 5/10
Fairways: Probably the best part of the course, inconsistent but nowhere was it thin. 6/10
Rough: Needs a cut but not terrible. Maybe 2.5 inches. 6/10
Bunkers: Was in none, can't say.
Greens: I could see them being fast when rolled and flat, but they were neither of those today. Very bumpy, inconsistent speed from hole to hole. 5/10

Overall it was wonderful to be out. I am not sure I recommend the course currently but I will return at a later date and re-evaluate so they must've been doing something right.

It had been about 18 months since I last played here so was looking forward to returning. Being a Club Corp course, I can play for cart fee only so I try to take advantage of this when I can. I was concerned about conditioning due to the recent rains, but except for #12 which has been shorten to a par 3 due to damage to the 12th fairway, I did not find any other damaged areas. The course was in very nice overall condition, and I thought the greens were excellent. Much faster than I remembered, with more "movement" than I recall.

The staff here is fantastic. They seem to make every effort to make your golf experience positive. We had the third time off at 7:24. We played in 3:20 which isn't great, but not too bad. I enjoyed the course and have to make a point of getting out here more often.

Played here on Thursday at 11 AM in a Senior Outing and was pleasantly surprise with the condition of the course coming out of the winter season. The course is quite hilly with quite a few blind shots into the greens.

Greens: were aerated 3 weeks ago so they were a little bumpy but very fast and "holding"

Fairways: very good condition, very few thin lies.

Rough: between 1 - 3" high.

Traps: some hardpan lies but overall playable.

POP: right at 4 hours which is good for an outing.

Customer Service: excellent from the cart guys, they were right there to transfer our clubs from our car to the carts. The Pro Shop and restaurant personnel were very friendly. Nice that there was free coffee after the drive up from Oceanside!

A challenging layout, play it if you get an invite!

Played Canyon Crest Country Club on August 1, 2015, courtesy of my buddy Danny getting an invite from the General Manager. Was exceedingly kind of James, the GM, to invite us out to play. In any case, on to the review:

Staff - First rate all the way. Guys working bag drop, pro shop counter, cart girl, restaurant staff, etc. Everyone was genuinely kind and hard working. Cannot say enough good things about the staff.

Practice Facilities - Great putting green and great driving range. Used both quite extensively prior to my round.

Tee boxes - Pretty even, and lush. Never had a problem finding a good area to tee off from.

Fairways - Looked pretty good considering the water restrictions that are in place. A few dry areas, but not nearly as bad as they could be. Indeed, in many areas, the grass was deep enough that I wound up hitting shots fat.

Sand - The only area that I can say was not exceptional. Most were pretty hard packed without much sand to hit from. This is true for fairway bunkers and greenside bunkers. Not the worst I have ever played, but could use some more sand.

Greens - When I first approached the green, there seemed to be some discoloration to the grass. I am not sure if this is a watering issue or some sort of malady. In any case, the discoloration made no difference for purposes of putting. I never encountered a put that would hop or go offline. Each of the greens was playing exceptionally well (even if I was not putting exceptionally well that day).

All in all, this was a wonderful experience, and I truly appreciate the staff making us feel right at home. If this course were closer to home, I would certainly consider a membership.

Finally, one final thank you to James, the GM, for inviting Danny and allowing me to tag along with him.

Decided to return to Canyon Crest and give it another try. Greens much better this time, having well healed from the punching in April. Course conditions were good, about what I expected. A few of the bunkers needed some attention, but overall, acceptable.

Was able to get off second right behind a single in a cart, so pace not an issue. Finished in about 2 1/2 hours. Enjoyed the course more the second time around, having some local acknowledge was helpful.

This is the first time I have played this course. I looked at the review and photos sixpez provided in his blog, so I kind of knew what to expect. I actually enjoyed the course and found while playing it I saw similarities to several other courses in the area.

The greens still showed residual effects of recent punching, more on the front than back. There was a lot of movement on some of these greens, and with them being rather bumpy, it made for a difficult day on the greens. I suspect when they fully recover, they would be much more enjoyable to putt on, and while even quicker, easier to predict the roll out.

It felt like I was always hitting uphill from both the tees and approaches to the green. With the exception of #17, there were no real downhill holes, which was strange. Also, they seemed to have a lot of pins "tucked" today, which did provide for some challenging shots.

Staff was great, got out 30 min before our scheduled tee time and was able to get aroung in well under 4 hours.

Played here in a Senior (60+) event for the first time at this course. Greens: didn't look that great (looked bumpy) but rolled smooth and fast and would hold a good shot. Fairways: some bare spots but in decent condition for winter golf but not what I would except of a country club. Rough: not very penal. Traps: no sand and firm. again not what I would except from a country club. POP: was over 4 1/2 because it was a senior event. Good customer service to get over 140 seniors ready for a shot gun start.
