Back with my monthly club at 915am on Sunday, 7/9/17. We got out a little early as the course was not crowded. My review from last week is still operative – course is in great shape and fun to play. It was hot and humid this morning, and with no wind it was like playing golf in a sauna! Got some breeze going on the back nine to take the edge off, but we sucked down a lot of water and eased along in 5 hr. No cart girl today. Staff continues to randomly drive into or through hitting groups.

Greens were good, faster than the practice green, and still with variations in firmness. Rough as you got off the beaten path is deep, wet, and sticky. Sand is wet and heavy early in the day. Bushes in front of the blue tees on #15 still need trimming.

No rating since I did that last week. Still highly recommended.

We played on Monday, 6:20 tee time, got out on time, with no waiting on next tee.

The course was in great playing conditions, lush, a little wet from the dew or watering, until the sun warmed things up. Tee boxes were fairly level with few unsanded divots, the fairways are lush, and not much run on front 9 due to moisture but got better when the sun came out. The rough was not too deep but grabs the club specially when it was wet, the greens were in beautiful shape. Lush, firm, rolled true, a couple ball marks on a few holes. The bunkers have decent sand, some were still moist, a couple I was in were dry, but one seemed to only have a couple inches of sand.

Great golf day, POP was 4.5 with only 3 holes where we waited for 2some in front to hit 2nd shots, 4some ahead of them were a bit on slow side but not much. Customer service was very good. 19th hole was OK, service was good but disappointed in the nachos we ordered. Chips were bagged ones, not fresh which was OK, the cheese was obviously Velveeta (shredded cheddar would have been better), the meat was ??? looked like it may have been previously cooked hamburgers, dry with no flavor. But the beer was cold.

An outing here with my monthly club is coming up next week, and recent reviews on GK have been good, so I got out to SL with my brother at 9am on a sunny warm Saturday, 7/1/17. I had received an email blast from the course, and when I booked on their website the rate came up even lower than the email - $57; a great rate for Saturday morning prime time. I’ve always had a good experience here and enjoy the layout and conditions of the course – today was no exception, as conditions were very good and we had very little wind most of the day. We got off only a few minutes late, paired with a couple of younger guys who work locally and were very amiable, and we had an enjoyable round. It didn’t seem like we were poking along and we waited only occasionally on the group in front of us, but overall the round took 5 hours, longer than I realized.

Greens are somewhat firm, look great and roll great, and with no obvious thin or bare spots. We overshot the hole a couple times early on after the practice putting green fooled us into thinking about a slower speed – on-course greens started medium+ and got quicker as they dried out, and downhill rollouts could be pretty substantial. Generally, greens accepted shots well, although I noted differences in firmness between greens and even on the same green. We saw an average number of old and new ballmarks. Greens and rough were a little damp to start the morning, resulting in after-mowing dried grass debris on most greens, although it generally didn’t affect putts.

Rough was 1-2 inches deep and very playable, although early on the wet rough really grabbed your ball and made it sit down. Fairway lies were generally good, with the grass close-cropped, although we occasionally had the ball sit down pretty good in the fairway. Lots of unfilled divots in all the popular areas. I wasn’t in the sand but playing partners looked like they had good conditions to work with. Tees were level and not badly damaged on the par-3s.

Even on Saturday morning the course was not that crowded and many spots were available on the small range mats. Excellent breakfast burrito in the grill. We started out with a short ration of sand in the divot refill bottles and ran out quickly – we didn’t see any refills and the roving marshal wasn’t carrying any on his cart, so I wound up stealing a little bit on the 13th tee for our own divots. That same marshal drove into our group as we teed off on hole 18 – clueless. Bushes have been allowed to grow too high in front of some blue tee boxes and unfairly restrict hitting lines (holes 12, 15, and others).

Still recommended.

Played today at 7:53am as 2some joined by a single. Although we waited a bit on the 4some in front during the back 9 play, it moved along well at 3 3/4 hr for the round. Unlike my previous round a few years back, I did see some browning in the fairways but in general fairways were lush and well groomed. Only problem I had were the tight wet lies if my approach happened to fall short. Greenside rough that I found were very thick, juicy and wet. I shouldn't have tried those 60 deg wedge lob shots. One greenside bunker I found had good sand but most of the fairway bunkers looked to be of dirt color. Probably best part of the course were the greens. Greens really held the lines well and were of med to med/fast speed. I don't think we found a single divot mark all day. Due to my balls generally ending up on wrong side of the hole, I did not putt well but it was nice to putt on such nice greens.
The only potential knock I would have is that many of the par 4s and 5s have similar type of look from the teeing ground. Other than that, it's a very very well kept and maintained course worth playing. Recommended.

Took a drive out to play Sierra Lakes with USCDodger on 4/23 at 2:30. POP right at 4 hours. 1:30 on the front and 2:30 on the back stuck behind a 5some that was at least a hole and a half behind the group in front of them at all times.

The course was in overall fantastic shape.

The tee boxes were level and lush. I'm sure if you looked hard enough you could find a poor lie, but I didn't see any. 10/10

The fairways weren't the greenest, but had excellent coverage and wasn't until 17 that we saw any real browning. 9/10

The rough was short in most areas, was a little longer in others, was dirt in spots too. 7/10

The greens rolled great. They were quick but not too fast and could be tough to read in spots. aside from some ball marks they were excellent. The greens were firm but held shots well throughout the bag. 8.5/10

The sand was.....not sand. greenside bunkers were okay but fairway bunkers were mostly rocks and hard pan. 4.5/10

Overall a fun course but not sure how often I'll make the hour+ drive out to play.

Played Sierra Lakes on Thursday April 20th. Weather was great and course is in great shape.

The Pro at Sierra Lakes, Ben Smith, is an outstanding teacher and with all the value added, lessons with him are a real bargain.

The pro shop staff is always good and courteous.

Recommend SL & Ben highly....!!!

Have played Sierra Lakes twice over the past two weeks, taking advantage of very good course conditions and reduced rates while they did course maintenance. As of Thursday 3/23 the greens have recovered about 90% with only the outside edge of the greens showing minor punch marks. The fairways have been cut down and remain in great condition with favorable roll out from the tee. The rough is short and playable but still provides a degree of difficulty when missing the overly generous fairways. No problem with the tee boxes but they did move us up on one day to compensate for the windy conditions. Don't recall seeing the cart girl, but we did play on weekdays and the low player activity could have contributed to that. The starter is a friendly fellow. Always a good little chit chat with him before you start your round.

In conclusion, scoring is optimum in Fontana. Good place for a friendly money game.

Played on December 28. Absolutely perfect weather out. Despite high winds in Rialto (driving on 210) no real wind to speak of here.

Played on December 28. Absolutely perfect weather out. Despite high winds in Rialto (driving on 210) no real wind to speak of here.

Course itself was in decent shape. The driving range was mats on top of grass, but was just fine. Starter got us out perfectly on time. Course was not busy, which was a pleasant surprise, so no waiting on most holes. Buddy's cart died on one hole, so the 10 min we waited for a new cart was the worst wait we had. Otherwise, a minute or two tops for a wait to hit. Round took us about 3:45 total.

As for conditions, the tee boxes were good. Few tees were moved for repairs, but not many were like this.

Fairways were somewhat thin, but not so bad that I was playing off dirt.

Rough was nice. Not too long, but pretty lush.

Sand was really good for the most part. Greenside bunkers were filled with fluffy sand. Fairway bunkers were good, but had some small rocks in them.

Greens were FAST. Really fast. Nicely manicured but way faster than I am used to. Ball would just keep running on even the softest putt.

All in all, was a great day out. Been a few years since I have played here, and was glad I got to play Sierra again.

drove out to sierra lakes, a course i played a few times while living in the IE, but hadn't been out to in many years. holy crap i forgot how windy it was here. course itself was in great shape, got out early from my tee time, teed off as a single, played through about 4 groups and finished in about 2 hours. teeboxes in good condition, all the tees would be moved up to the front on holes that played into the wind, holes that played with the wind, the tees were where they were supposed to be. fairways nice and tight, very good coverage. rough was perfectly penal and very consistent. bunkers were fluffy enough to play out of and the wind would perfectly blow all the sand into your eyes. greens rolled generally well, medium fast, some putts went a bit off line here and there. the wind though, my drives went anywhere from 180 yards to 300 yards. i'm sure a few of my wedge shots were going backwards as they came down. definitely a challenge of this course when it's blowing. generally good layout, a few forgettable par 4s, but still very fun track. would play it more often if it was closer to me and wasn't as windy near the foothills. just a personal preference of mine i guess.
