Played Steele Canyon - Ranch/Vineyard today and teed off at 9:06. Beautiful cloudy day that ended around the 9th hole and warmed up quite a bit. The breeze kicked up midway through the second nine and kept it cool enough to enjoy. It has been 12 years since I have played this course and I had forgotten what a delight it is to play. Course is surrounded by luxurious homes so be careful with errant shots, you might just damage something expensive. The course was a bit dry and mowed short making the rough somewhat nonexistent. The greens rolled well, but some slower than others. Lots of tight lies around the greens which made me break out my putter from 10-15 feet off the green. Putter was a good choice. The fairways were patchy, but provided a decent lie most of the time. Again, the highlight was just playing. Even though it was not pristine, I highly recommend this course at this time. Beautiful surroundings and definitely a challenge. Play well my friends.

Had an omelette at the bar before I teed off, great food and great service, very reasonably priced, too. Great staff all around, hats off and kudos to them.

Teeboxes were nearly perfect. Never a problem.

Fairways were great, I never had a bad lie.

Rough, not a big deal. mixed bag, the bermuda is going dormant and I never had any problems with the rough.

Traps were ok, nothing fantasitic. I found two of them and they were just ok, a little hard underneath.

Greens were pretty good. Held shots very well. A little bumpy and they were very fast down hill, so beware. There were some dead spots on them, but didn't notice them on my putts. The guy putting in the cups this morning was having a very bad day, the pin locations were diabolical crazy...

Overall, great day. Conditions were very playable and with the Costco voucher, it's a great value. The layout is just amazing, get out there and play Steele Canyon. Ranch/Canyon arguably the best 18 holes in the SD County.

Played the Canyon/Ranch on a birthday deal (thanks Steele Canyon!). Found the course to be in great shape, greens have fully healed rolling well at medium speed and accepting well struck shots perfectly. Fairways were in good shape with decent roll out, good to hit from. Rough is minimal, bunkers were firm in some and fluffier in others, but all were a pleasure to play out of. Customer service was great, POP was 3.5 hours as the place was pretty empty (I have never seen the parking lot that empty on a beautiful day like today?) Get out there and play it, especially if you can find a deal!

Played the canyon/ ranch combo today in the morning. Course handled the recent rains very well. Some areas of the fairways were covered in silt from runoff but nothing to bad. Tees were great never had a problem and level. Fairways are dormant but still very playable. No real rough to speak off so not really an issue. Greens were great. Held shots well and still had great speed with all the rain. I was only in one bunker. Sand was wet and heavy but still got out ok. Had a great time on a great course. If you haven’t seen the deal on Costco it is awesome. You would be hard pressed to find to good courses for $40 each.

Pretty much everywhere in San Diego county is moist due to all the rain. Steele Canyon seems to be the lesser evil during the rainy season.

Pretty much everywhere in San Diego county is moist due to all the rain. Steele Canyon seems to be the lesser evil during the rainy season.

Course is absolutely beautiful dormant. We played Canyon/Ranch. Greens are running a little slower than normal due to the saturation, so if you're used to the 11 or baked out 12+, this will be a small adjustment in breaks.

Pace of play is excellent, as usual. Staff always amazing.

Played the Canyon / Ranch combo yesterday. I haven’t played here in a few months and was happy to be back. Both courses are in good to great shape, with Canyon being better than Ranch. The only down side to Ranch were the greens were still showing signs of recent vericut. It didn’t affect roll that much but did seem to keep the ball from staying on the green.

Tee boxes were in great shape, nice and lush with plenty of flat area to hit from. Fairways were nice with extra roll. Seemed a little dry but what course in SD isn’t dry right now. No real rough to speak of and wasn’t an issue. Greens are great on Canyon but ok on Ranch. Canyon held shots and rolled at a good speed, not to fast but not too slow. Made it around without hitting a bunker, but they looked ok, maybe a little crusty.

Pace was great and if you can find a deal, check Costco and Groupon, may be worth playing. Only downside is cart didn’t have a pencil and one of the sand bottles was empty. For what they charge I think those kinds of things shouldn’t happen. Maybe it’s just me being picky.

Played here today (5/26) with fellow GK member jpeairs85 and a friendly twosome on the Canyon/Vineyards combo. Was bummed we couldn’t play Ranch today, but had an enjoyable round finishing in just a shade under 4 hours, so no complaints there. There was a huge tournament out there in the morning that was not done when we tees off at 2pm but they seemed to play determined and quickly. On to the review... Tee boxes: Okay to good condition. A few of the par 3 boxes were pretty chewed up, but I would say that is to be expected. All others had good turf to stand on (level) and there are a few tee options on the course. Fairways: Great condition. The recent May gray that creates morning mist and drizzle has greened up the fairways and left them with good lies throughout. Roll seemed fair today (even on holes where the slope was unfair) and visually they were appealing. Rough: As Jim mentioned in his last review, there’s not much rough to contend with, rather the ESA and lateral hazards that frame every hole are far greater in quantity and difficulty. The rough that does exist was not overly penal. Bunkers: Varied but overall okay. I was in only two bunkers today but they were on the low end of the “okay” scale; more dirt than sand and rather coarse. I did see a few on the fluffier side, just not enough of them. Greens: The highlight of the round. Very good condition; the roll was very smooth and the speed varied all day from slower than thought to lightning fast, depending on the wicked slopes and pin placements. A real test today! ETC: Staff was very friendly, from starter to cart girl, they made a real effort to make you feel welcomed. I love the layout here and the course played tough, especially with wind at times. Range could use some love and GPS on the carts would be benificial. Pace was excellent today and the price was right for a weekend. Recommend!

Had a 10:27 this morning, check in was quick, friendly and informative, perfect. Got sent out by the friendly and once again informative starter a bit early. We played the Canyon/Vineyard combo. The course, although not plush green from wall to wall, played excellent, great lies on nice fairways with some run out. Rough was minimal but made you take notice. I wasn't in any bunkers but I could see they were firm but very playable and manicured. The greens were in excellent condition, firm but accepting of well struck shots, rolling very smooth, fast in spots, tricky to read, just excellent! Layout keeps you interested with some tough holes and nowhere you can coast . . . not overly difficult, but if you want to score well you need to pay attention. Course knowledge is a plus as there are some hidden features that you can't quite see from the tee. Recommended
