Great layout, sever greens. The day we played, there was a PGA event, so the pins were 3-4 paces on the green tucked in the corners. Some of the greens looked like there we elephants burried under them, in some cases the whole family must have been under there. The sand for me, was too soft and made for difficult sand shots, but overall a great course. The staff was outstanding!

Played the course for the first time on Saturday, 1/26, between the rain storms. Layout and fairways are remniscent of what you'll find at Salt Creek and Arroyo Trabuco, along with dramatic elevation changes, especially on the back nine. Although dormant, the fairway turf was good, albeit a bit soft in low-lying areas. In fact, due to the topography, the ball had a tendency to funnel and collect in some of the drainage areas.

Golf course offers a good variety of holes and, in spite of other reviewers' gripes about the "quirky layout" and lack of enough land, I found it enjoyable to play. The nearby airport traffic, an annoyance to some, really isn't an issue as far as I am concerned; it had no impact on my game or enjoyment of the course whatsoever. The view towards the ocean is nice but when facing the opposite direction, El Camino Real and many industrial complexes give you an entirely different feel.

Fairways are fairly generous on many holes, tight on others, but you are definitely at the mercy of the lay of the land when it comes to finding a level lie. One major issue I see is the severely canted fairway on #8; all shots from the tee gather in one area of the fairway that is pock-mocked with sand-filled divots. Keeping the turf in this area in good shape is going to be a challenge.

Where this course really shines, though, is on the greens. Yes, I know the undulations are a bit extreme but I'll address that in a moment. Do know this: the putting surfaces are immaculate...very few ball marks, if any at all...and they roll smooth and true with good speed. Since the greens are on the firm side, due to the newness of the course, approach shots had a tendency to release, although a few well-struck short irons stopped fairly quickly.

I will agree that the mounding and terracing on a few of the greens is a bit over the top and some of these peculiarities are unnoticeable until you have played the course, but the better player will most likely be hitting a short iron into these greens to begin with. There is a high premium placed on shot accuracy and control from 150 yards in. Still, on #14 for example, you could hit your tee shot 6 feet from the stick and ultimately face a 50+ foot putt to the raised tier because of the contour of the green. It's a bit unnecessary, in my opinion, and will most likely put a few people off.

#18 is another example where the entire green seems to be a complex of four individual greens all melded together. With the pin cut on the extreme right side of the green, I doubt you'd face a tougher approach shot, even with wedge in your hands. Play to the "safe" part of the green and you've got to work like hell to avoid three-putting. I guess "unique" would be a kind way to characterize the green design; subtlety is not in the vocabulary. I'll try to upload some pictures to illustrate my point.

Staff was friendly and helpful; beverage cart made plenty of rounds during the time we were on the course. Pace of play was 4:30 (teed off at 10:00); not bad at all for the weekend, and we had to wait on a few holes. Range facility, although on the narrow side with a relatively small number of hitting stations, was acceptable. Grass tees were closed so synthetic turf was the order of the day. No real opinion one way or the other but it looked and felt more like real turf when compared to other types of hitting mats. 50 range balls, in new condition, cost $5. Nice practice putting area and a great looking clubhouse.

I was a bit apprehensive as I approached the first tee since I have heard, at best, many lukewarm reviews about The Crossings. My advice is to play it and form your own opinion. It's not all that difficult and the smart, control-oriented player can score well here while those who spray the ball may struggle. I will agree that the weekend greens fee is a bit steep, and most likely will rise within the next year, but I may find myself playing there once in a while just the same. It was fun to play, a nice change of pace, and the opportunity to putt on such perfect greens made it worth it.

(Or maybe I just left myself on the wrong side of the hole?) Since the course did not overseed, everything is dormant and does not look very nice, but play just fine! Sand was too fluffy for my taste, but was very well maintained, and lots of it, Staff was great! Enjoyed the course very much.

Not sure I would describe Crossings as last reviewer..."sweeping views, etc.." but this was a pretty nice course and I may have missed some of the views b/c I was playing pretty quick today. I will also qualify my review before I start by saying that I had pretty low expectations of this place after hearing a couple of bad things about the mediocrity of the course.

The layout has a lot of elevation changes and some really quirky routing in spots. Number twelve (i think) is just out in the middle of nowhere all by itself. The design is nothing spectacular in my opinion, there are at least a couple of courses in SoCal that feel exactly the same (Salt Creek, Arroyo Trabuco). However, if you like elevation changes, you will like this place. Not a traditional layout at all. Also, the green complex on 18 is like a miniture golf hole....undulations to the point of ridiculous.

The good parts are, the greens were in really good condition, almost impeccable. Only a few ball marks and rolled a good ten on stimp. Fairways are kind of hard pan, but they are green and not too beat up (there was a lot of patching going on in the fairways, especially on the back, but grounds crew has done an excellent job merging patches with original grass). Tee boxes were excellent, only one hole I can remember with unlevel box. Went in four traps, three of them were great and consistent with the type/depth of sand, fourth on 18 was totally different (not better, but worse).

Final positive thing to say is that the staff was super cool and this is a really nice facility (clubhouse, range, etc...). I arrived at the course this morning before pro shop opened and they made accomodations to get me out in front of the first group in the morning so I could make it to my conference in SD. Even let me hit some balls on the range before sunrise.

If you live in Carlsbad or SD, go try this course for sure b/c they give special rates to locals! If you don't live down there, try to get a twilight time. I paid $90 today and it was completely worth it! If you can play twilight and finish, this is be an awesome deal.

The bothersome part was the planes continually flying over at low levels, either just taking off or getting ready to land at nearby Palomar Airport.

First time playing this course! Wasn't exactly what I expected ..... much easier! Appears they are losing several of their greens. I ALWAYS walk, but this course would be almost impossible to walk. The distance between holes is incredible! Particularly 12 to 13. Wow! Would I come back, yes! Is it worth $90. No! I suspect that after the initial "hupla" wears off, there will be some "specials" offered here. The staff was very nice. course is new so don't want to be too critical of the condition. Best thing I can say is I had a nice experience at the Crossings.

And the noise from the planes taking off from Palomar airport, it is very distracting. Of course the plane crash, makes me very uncomfortable. It is way overpriced.....Torrey Pines is cheaper and 200 % better than this course.... I won't be back.....There are far better course around San Diego.....No Thanks.

Played Saturday8/23, paid $65 to play,tee time was at 3pm, needless to say we started at 3:15 and finished in the dark. The fairways are a lot of fun, and some of the views are really pretty. Some of the holes are pretty spread out. The greens? Oh man, black circles all over, some sort of fungus damaged them. The roll is weird and some of them have dramatic slopes difficult to do well the first time. The staff is very nice and helpfull, there is a temporary green in one of the holes due to the plane crash. I liked the course specially the back nine, but I find it over priced even for a resident. I was a single joining a thresome and I was forced to share a cart with the stranger. I never had that happen, and I play a lot.
I am disappointed and it will be a long time before I play it again, worst of all....I live around the corner.

I want to add a couple footnotes. The staff is very friendly, but a tad disorganized. I'm sure that will get better as they move forward. The carts are equipped with coolers and GPS and it is a goo... Continue »

The carts are equipped with coolers and GPS and it is a good thing because the course is not marked otherwise. The beverage cart did not drive the course but rather parked near #7 and you pass it twice. The turn is right at the clubhouse so you can visit the snack bar there. The restaurant was not open yet and is due to open in September.
