Played The Crossings at Carlsbad for the first time yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Beautiful weather, oceans views, great company and a fun shot makers type layout (my favorite kind). The conditions of the course were not as good as I expected them to be because the greens were currently under maintenance. A couple days before our round the golf course aerated ½ of all the greens. I’m glad they did because it looked like they needed it. Given how fresh the maintenance was and the fact the greens account for 40% of Greenskeeper.org’s playing condition rating, I don’t feel rating the course would be a fair representation of the common conditions. In general the fairways on the front nine were dormant and thin yet on the back nine it appears the course overseeded so many lush lies where found. Same conditions pertaining to the rough in that the back nine was more lush and better maintained. Overall the bunkers contained good quality sand and tee boxes well maintained. In general I’d say the course was in GOOD shape.

Although the course was currently not in great shape the layout, especially the back nine, is outstanding. If you like risk/reward golf, this is a dream track for you. It’s tight off the tee but fair. It has many forced carries but none too difficult to clear. Most par 5’s are reachable in two but will punish you with deep bunkers, forced carries over hazards and difficult green complexes if you fail. Perhaps is the most enjoyable element of the course besides its scenic tee shots are the greens. These greens are big and shaped like potato chips. There are severe undulations and many bowl type edges that allow you to play creative chip shots. They will test your putting skills to the fullest. What also makes the course gorgeous yet treacherous to your scorecard are the green complexes. Heavy bunkering with deep/steep faced traps await to challenge the best of short games. Personally I love it. Like I said above I’m a shot maker type of player and get inspired to take on creative visually intimidating layout.

Before the round I had lunch at the Canyon Clubhouse Restaurant. The food was delicious and the place was busy mostly with non-golfers. No surprise as to why. It’s beautiful with ocean views, large dinning area, vaulted ceiling and terrace patio. I highly recommend a bite to eat before your round.

I’m looking forward to playing here again.

Played mid-morning on Sunday, 12/26/10, on a cool sunny day with only light breezes. Had recommendations from 'zachary' for this course so gave it a try. Thought it would be dried out after all our SoCal rain before Christmas, but apparently they got a lot of rain the night before, so course was very wet, with bushy fairways, soft medium slow greens. 'Cart path only' everywhere, so I didn't rate the course. Since it's draped over hillsides above Carlsbad, I would have thought the course would drain better, but there were many fairways with standing water, and mushy conditions in many areas. However, the course was very playable and interesting, although a lot of walking on these slopes really wore me out on the back nine. Much more elevation change than I expected, great views of the coastal hills and ocean, attractive bridge 'crossings' of creeks and arroyos, with the bridge over the creek gorge on #16 especially spectacular, both from above and below.

Pricey ($95 SD County resident rate on 'holiday' time) but upscale facilities and appropriate for good conditioning and ambiance. Cart girl came by several times. Snack shack at the turn. Very nice clubhouse and facilities. Very 'deliberate' group in front of us was 2 holes behind on #10, so we had to call the clubhouse to get the marshall out. Some blind tees shots on par 5s - one of the marshalls was acting as a running spotter on #15, so that's somewhat labor intensive, but no other way to know if the group ahead has cleared. No yardage book, no GPS. Was told the course was 'well-marked', but that means hunting for sprinkler heads, and we were already doing enough walking with the CPO. Greens on the back had a LOT of humps, tiers, and movement - if greens were running fast, those back nine greens would be brutal. Recommended.

Played Saturday 12/11, teed off (at) 9:30 done in alittle less than 5 hours, but with the distance between some of the tees it will add to your total time on the course! Great customer service and practice facilities, saw the cart girl 5 or 6 times! course was in very good shape for this time of year, greens have multiple tiers and being on the right tier will make a big difference in your total putts. Enjoy the changllenge and the views! Will definetly be back!

Played on Weds the 17th and the course is in fantastic shape. Greens are as fast as I have ever seen them and it makes for a true test and very hard to read. tee boxes were a little fluffy, but in good shape. Fairways were perfect and rough is up and tough. The sand in the bunkers I was in was good. Course is great fun and except for the slowww group in front of us, Day was great. Marshalls did move the group along as best as possible.

Played this course 9/17 and carts had GPS. Played on 10/22 and GPS units have been removed. Couple holes require lay up yardage and cart location of the group ahead of you need GPS due to blind shots.... Continue »

Played for the first time at The Crossing on 9-28-10. I loved it. Half of the greens were aerated and the other half were recovering nicely from the previous weeks aeration, but my putts rolled true. Greens were nice and soft from the watering. Like the layout of the course, but walkers beware, a lot of space between tee boxes. The back tee boxes were also aerated and sanded, but we played from there any way. The course does not play that extremely long, because a lot of holes had doglegs. A few holes had blind tees shots, starting at the 1 hole. The greenside bunkers were consistent with nice amount of sand. Saw some fairway bunkers with compact sand due to sprinkler water. Greens had a lotof undulation. Luckily I was on the green at the right tier or slope. Friendly customer service. Pretty much enjoyed the whole experience.

I have played this course several times and really enjoy it. Varied hole layouts; some fairly flat greens and some VERY undulating ones; GREAT terrain changes. This place offers a reasonable chance for me to break 80 but not without my minimizing my errors and "brain farts". Just the way a great course should be!

It's the 6th of July and it's raining - this is California - what gives? The course was in nice condition, with the exception of a few areas on a few greens. Otherwise no complaints! The staff was perfect! Always a fun course to play, and with their lowering the green fees, makes it worth the extra drive compared to paying a little less and taking 5+ hours to play in L.A.
