Played CG Cal on 01/27/20 after paying La Costa in the morning. I was surprised to see GC Cal in significantly better condition than LC. This is as good as I have seen it here in years. Greens are in good shape, rolling very smooth. Best grass on the fairways that I have ever seen here. Rough is good, although patchy in spots. Sand is fine. This is a definite positive sign for this course. Course was in really good condition, and the tee sheet was pretty crowded for mid-day on a Monday. Recommended!

12/16 using their December promotion $39 after 11 with a sleeve of pro vs. Got there early what with good traffic and was warmly welcomed by Mark at the desk and while over on the practice area--driving range/pitching area was also greeted by Mike the starter who let us know that it was not busy and we could go when we were ready which we did at about 1020 for a leisurely 340 POP only briefly waiting on 17 and 18.
Great weather and overall good conditions--we were here 2 weeks ago and today was even better. Fairways gave us good lies overall with the occasional thinner lie but very playable. Limited rough with thicker areas close to the greens. Tees level with some needing to be mowed.
Bunkers of which I found 5 were mostly ok 3 were nicely groomed with a thicker grained sand that was playable, 1 was wet with a thin layer of sand over damp dirt requiring a more squared up shot and 1 was a fairway bunker also nicely groomed but softer than I prefer.
Greens are quite healthy rolling smoothly ant medium speed firm but receptive to full shots and having good roll out on chips.
Layout provides good variety, some elevation changes, scenic with water occasionally in play.

One of my favorite courses to play. Staff is always super friendly and accommodating. I have to agree with Gary00's review that the course has some issues with respect to conditioning. Several of the greens have bare spots, but they are still very puttable. Fairways are a mixed bag, depending where your drive finishes. Some nice areas, some thin, some even bare. Both bunkers I found had thin sand.

I guess because I enjoy this golf course so much, I tend to over look the conditions, which is in conflict with the review process, so I'm sure my rating is not as objective as it should be. The course is not in bad shape, it's just not in great shape. It's OK. But because of the staff, the "bones" of the course, decent pricing, and easy access, I tend to return here more often than other places. I only thing about this course which I do not like is the frequent long distances between holes, which makes what should be a great "walking course" - not practical to walk.

11/19 using the clubs $39 after 11 with a sleeve of provs(($49 before 9 and $29 after 2 promo good until end of year) on a mixed weather day warm and calm followed by breezy cool and sprinkles. Followed a 4some that looked really slow but still had a 4hr POP and came to find out that one of the players was a 92 year old woman with her 50 something son and daughter visiting from the east coast and staying at Welk but momma wanted a big course and from what we saw she went after every shot and the kids wanted to stay in the will. Great testament to the lover of the game!!! Fairways were so so with some really nice areas and some not so much being on the thinish side, overall lies were mostly ok. Rough was spotty with bare areas vermin damage but good around the greens. Tees ok. Bunkers have a fine but compacted sand generally quite playable even with some areas having small pebbles. Greens had some issues in places with some bare spots around the perimeter neglected or marginally repaired ball marks with some occasional bumpiness but overall played better than they appeared rolling medium to medium fast and receptive to full shots. Friendly welcoming staff. the score came out a little low woulgive it more like a 6.5

A friend and I took advantage of a member-for-a-day offer of $20. I've played here several times before and figured that even if conditions weren't good that would be a great deal.
Our tee time was 7am and after a fast and friendly check in we were offered an earlier start. We decided to skip warming up on the range and headed out.

The conditions were ok. The fairways, while very damp early on, had good coverage and were well cushioned. There was, however, a lot of tree debris and animal droppings all over the course. There were many maintenance workers out getting things cleaned up.

I was in only one bunker. It was clean, soft, heavy, dirt - easy enough to hit out of. There has been a lot of turf reduction around the course. Most of it is around the tee boxes, creating a nice look and a longer carry from all of them. Those areas are currently all dirt but the plan is to put in drought tolerant vegetation. I was super disappointed in hole #5. All of the reeds in the lake have been cut down to the nubs and with all the turf gone from around the tee boxes, the hole just looked barren and ugly.

Many of the greens are in recovery from a fungus. They looked worse than they played, though. Putts rolled medium speed and, for the most, part smoothly.

There are so many fun and challenging holes here. I played well today and it felt so good when #9 didn't beat me up like it usually does. POP was nice at 3:45. I will definitely be back when conditions are better.

We had the second time off at 6:10am, but thanks to Mark in the pro shop, he allowed us to get out first, so obviously there was no pace of play issues. Nice smooth easy pace of 2 1/2 hours. Than... Continue »

Course was in better condition than I'd expected. Greens rolled well, albeit too slow for my taste. But they held the shots very well! Most of the fairways were green/lush and pretty nice. Rough was a mixed bag, but for the most part acceptable. The greenside bunkers were so wet and soft, it was really difficult to gage how much sand to take. And of course today I was I lots of greenside bunkers, which totally derailed my score.

I just really like this course, the flow, the mix of easy and hard holes, no homes adjacent to the holes, no street traffic, just a bunch of fun holes, a challenge but not so much to punish you. (Except for #6, which has my number !)

Staff is ALWAYS great and accommodating. A bit pricey, but sometimes you have to pay a few extra $$ to get what you want.

I play here 4-5 times a week , so I do not review often....greens are the best they have been in years, working hard to keep the fungus away, tees good, fairways just aerated, so they are coming around, not as thin as they were, rough is spotty, my only gripe is the bunkers, way too wet, also, working to improve the range...customer service is exceptional...wait, one more gripe. reverse shotgun starts really irk me, ask the shop before you set up a tee time, just to be on the safe side...drive safely, stay healthy, CGG...

POP: 3:25 Weather: Overcast/Mid 60's Time: 6:10am Date: 6/22/19 Service and Amenities: Staff is very friendly and pretty jovial for being that early in the morning. They have members only locker room but allow some access to the playing public. I have never tried their food as we always play here early morning before any of that stuff opens. Large putting green/chipping area near the first tee but the range is a trek from the clubhouse; definitely need to take a cart there. I have never used their range so I cannot comment on its condition. Greens: The greens are this course are relatively easy to read with the exception being the few with some large tiers and a deceiving slopes that blend well with the surround topography. Greens were rolling relatively slow, albeit true. The greens were a bit firmer than I remember but were still holding shots and even backing up wedges on a few. Fairways: The fairways were very firm and getting better than last time I played them. While there exist some barespots on the fringes of the holes intended play areas, if you keep it in the center of them, there is a nice lush grass pillow to hit off of. They provided very nice rollout and good lies for iron shots on average. Some of the fairways require local knowledge for tee shots because a well placed center landing may roll off into the rough or OB on a few holes due to severe slopes with quick fairways. Bunkers: Bunkers were a bit odd...greenside bunkers were very firm with thin lies while the fairway bunkers tended to have about 2" of soft sand in them. Our group had a few "Fried-Eggs" in fairway bunkers from tee shots but not a single one when missing an approach shot into a greenside bunker. Tee Boxes: Flat but thin. Could always find a level teeing spot, however some of the par 3s had pretty bad/deep divots. Rough: About 1" long in spots and but other spots were completely bare. Depending on how it was sitting, the rough was deep/thick enough to produce crazy fliers. Not too tough to get a club through at all. Overall: Not a bad course to play for the $64 price tag on the weekend but it is a trek from San Diego proper. It has a fun layout and but is still a work in progress. Go check it out to help them afford to keep their rehabilitation going!

Played here today (6/9/18) with fellow GK member Bill visiting from Michigan on a TeeOff.com discounted tee time (8am) for roughly $55. I normally don't announce the green fee but I felt that for a prime time Sunday morning tee time, the price was more than fair. Today was a story of bad play but great greens. Overall, it was an enjoyable time with good playing partners and warm weather.

Tee boxes: Probably the worst part of the course today; only mediocre condition. Tee boxes varied from rock hard turf to melted butter when driving in the tee. Blue tees were more than chewed up and some of the marker placements were just unfair.

Fairways: Good condition overall. They offered more than adequate turf conditions, visually pleasing to the eye, and a fair amount of roll. A few divots but those are from people stupidly not filling them.

Rough: Not overly penal, though what was really killer as always is the ESA. It's prevalent and it bites back on bad shots.

Bunkers: Was only in one today and it was in good shape. More beach sand than pearl white grains, but enough sand present in order to try for sand saves. Sand condition was good.

Greens: The absolute highlight of the round. The greens were fabulous; a wonderful forest green area of fine carpet. Varied in size but all rolled true and slow all day. Some of the best played all year.

ETC: Carts lacked in GPS and ice in the coolers, which on a 92 degree day, they really needed. Cart girl (the same one as from my very first GK cup match nearly 7 years ago!) seemed to be overwhelmed going around the course and barely made eye contact as she asked "you guys good?." Check-in was good but there was a huge tournament today that caused us to tee off a bit delayed. Pace was still good at just under 4.5 hours but we waited on the entire front 9, with the back 9 speeding up. A good deal warrants a visit for those less than 30 mins away.
