Played 6/20/20 It had been a while since playing here and forgot how much I like the layout here. Challenging, but fair. Fairway's were fuller then I've ever seen them. Mostly great coverage with good to great lies. Greens were in very good to great shape. Held shots. Running at medium quick with good rolls. Check in was easy. Easy Recommend.

Played GC-Cal early on 5/28. My first time back out in 3 months! Course is in very good shape. Greens are as good as I have seen them since their private club days. Fairways are good. Traps were nice as the staff must have raked them before we started.

Still one of my favorite tracks in the area. Highly recommended with the following warning.

Weber is correct, that fence on #12 is awful. After reading his review, I expected a fence brought in from the farm boundary. However, that fence runs right down the middle of the tee boxes, which effectively means you have 1/4 tee box remaining. The fence cuts off a good 20 yards from the left boundary. Yes, those 20 yards are in the trees, but with the left to right fairway slope to the lake. that means you have a safe landing area of 1/4 of the left edge of the fairway. 10-15 yard left - OB. 10-15 yards right - pond. And it is a 200+ plus yard carry from the tee to the safe landing area. It used to be a miss left rattles in the trees, then drops down the slope into the fairway leaving a long approach. That option is gone now. It requires a 225 yard shot more accurate than a par 3. It is just a bad hole now, I'd vote for turning it into a short par 3 rather than a bad par 4.

I inquired about the reason - apparently Bonsall ISD has that area marked for a new high school, but has lost the finance vote over several elections. So they have fenced off their land. Must have been a surveyor issue as it does take a hunk of #12 away.

Course is in nice shape, greens rolled well, but were a bit too slow for my taste. Fairways provided plenty of coverage. Rough & tee boxes OK. The bunkers were the worst part of the course, and had nothing to do with no rakes. Kind of a hard pan type clay.

They have placed a wire fence along side hole #12 on the left side, which gives this already rather tight hole and much more challenging tee shot. No idea why this was done? Otherwise had a great quick morning round under beautiful weather. Too bad my game was not up to the same standard.

Out with Sr714 for our GK match at 10:40 on leap day. Steve had a ClickitGolf voucher for a $70 twosome. A steal of a deal. As for the course, everything average to above average. Fairways were probably as lush as I've seen them out here which means instead of the normal 40 yards of roll you only get 20. You still have to be mindful that shots roll-out out here making attack angles that much more crucial. Rough was not overly penal and inconsistent in spots. Bunkers looked decent (I was only in one so can't speak to play-ability too much). Tee were typical, uneven in spots and a little chewed on the par 3s. I thought the greens were inconsistent in their reaction to pitch shots. Some bit, some spots couldn't be bothered to hold any spin. Really strange. They rolled well overall and several greens showed signs of recent sodding that will take a few years to look like the rest of the green (ie Poa takeover complete). Overall a good value play in North SD County.

1/28 birthday golf $20 cart fee week before and week after window-- link to print out voucher is down so id only is sufficient. Easy friendly check in. Had time for a little warm up and then was informed that we could go early so had a 25 min head start. Tuesday is ladies golf so they wanted us out so the ladies could start early too. We were warned that the front groups play fast and that was no joke. Hustled for a 350 POP waiting some on the 3 some ahead. Beautiful day and scenic surroundings with a special coyote serenade for a couple of holes.Overall conditions have improved since we were here in December. Fairways are still winter thin giving good roll but better cushion and lies. Still tight but seemed to have just enough more grass to make for an easier strike especially with fairway clubs. Rough is minimal along many fairways but a definite factor around the greens.
Tees lush and level. The 5 bunkers that I played out of had fine newly groomed but nicely compacted sand of sufficient depth to reward well executed shots.
Greens are very healthy with dense grass smoothly cut with the dew brushed off so speed was consistent right from the get go. Medium fast firm for hips but soft enough to hold well struck shots. Big greens with ample opportunity to find some challenging pin placements.

Played CG Cal on 01/27/20 after paying La Costa in the morning. I was surprised to see GC Cal in significantly better condition than LC. This is as good as I have seen it here in years. Greens are in good shape, rolling very smooth. Best grass on the fairways that I have ever seen here. Rough is good, although patchy in spots. Sand is fine. This is a definite positive sign for this course. Course was in really good condition, and the tee sheet was pretty crowded for mid-day on a Monday. Recommended!

12/16 using their December promotion $39 after 11 with a sleeve of pro vs. Got there early what with good traffic and was warmly welcomed by Mark at the desk and while over on the practice area--driving range/pitching area was also greeted by Mike the starter who let us know that it was not busy and we could go when we were ready which we did at about 1020 for a leisurely 340 POP only briefly waiting on 17 and 18.
Great weather and overall good conditions--we were here 2 weeks ago and today was even better. Fairways gave us good lies overall with the occasional thinner lie but very playable. Limited rough with thicker areas close to the greens. Tees level with some needing to be mowed.
Bunkers of which I found 5 were mostly ok 3 were nicely groomed with a thicker grained sand that was playable, 1 was wet with a thin layer of sand over damp dirt requiring a more squared up shot and 1 was a fairway bunker also nicely groomed but softer than I prefer.
Greens are quite healthy rolling smoothly ant medium speed firm but receptive to full shots and having good roll out on chips.
Layout provides good variety, some elevation changes, scenic with water occasionally in play.

One of my favorite courses to play. Staff is always super friendly and accommodating. I have to agree with Gary00's review that the course has some issues with respect to conditioning. Several of the greens have bare spots, but they are still very puttable. Fairways are a mixed bag, depending where your drive finishes. Some nice areas, some thin, some even bare. Both bunkers I found had thin sand.

I guess because I enjoy this golf course so much, I tend to over look the conditions, which is in conflict with the review process, so I'm sure my rating is not as objective as it should be. The course is not in bad shape, it's just not in great shape. It's OK. But because of the staff, the "bones" of the course, decent pricing, and easy access, I tend to return here more often than other places. I only thing about this course which I do not like is the frequent long distances between holes, which makes what should be a great "walking course" - not practical to walk.

11/19 using the clubs $39 after 11 with a sleeve of provs(($49 before 9 and $29 after 2 promo good until end of year) on a mixed weather day warm and calm followed by breezy cool and sprinkles. Followed a 4some that looked really slow but still had a 4hr POP and came to find out that one of the players was a 92 year old woman with her 50 something son and daughter visiting from the east coast and staying at Welk but momma wanted a big course and from what we saw she went after every shot and the kids wanted to stay in the will. Great testament to the lover of the game!!! Fairways were so so with some really nice areas and some not so much being on the thinish side, overall lies were mostly ok. Rough was spotty with bare areas vermin damage but good around the greens. Tees ok. Bunkers have a fine but compacted sand generally quite playable even with some areas having small pebbles. Greens had some issues in places with some bare spots around the perimeter neglected or marginally repaired ball marks with some occasional bumpiness but overall played better than they appeared rolling medium to medium fast and receptive to full shots. Friendly welcoming staff. the score came out a little low woulgive it more like a 6.5
