Played 8/14 through 8/16 in an SCGA Tournament. Great area. Great golf course! The course is challenging. They have held U.S. Open qualifying here as well as the final stage of PGA Tour Q School. You need to play it at least once to know what to hit from the tee. In some cases the driver is not your friend on some par 4’s and one par 5 (15). The wind is a factor from about 11:00 am on. We played the white tees. The course maybe easier from the blues for most people as you can’t reach the really bad trouble. The black tees are for long hitters or players with accurate middle to long irons. The rough is punitive. The greens were great, smooth and fast with lots of break. The tees were OK, par 3 tees a little beat up. Fairways were good. The rough, as I said, is penal. If you get in it, even around the greens, you can almost count on bogey. The staff was good. I highly recommend this course

Played here 8/2. Always look forward to playing here but was somewhat disappointed this time. They really needed a starter (and/or a marshal!)- two groups jumped in front of us while we waited to be called and that SLOWED play way down. This track has some serious challenges and that usually adds to the pleasure of playing but this time there were challenges that took a lot of the joy out of play. There was some seriously convoluted and woven-in grass in the rough- including slightly adjacent to the green. Hit it and a foot square area would lift up! More bare spots and divot areas in the fairways then I expected. However the greens were rolling fairly true and moderately fast, the tee boxes were level, the views superb, and we got a great deal to play! I'll play here again without any hesitation.

Played 8-2-11. Started poorly with no starter on the tee and 2 groups starting in front of us without being called from the clubhouse. Had us backed up before we ever got to the first green. No marshals made for a long round. Course was in good shape but the rough was so thick you could lose your ball a foot off the fairway. Biggest disappointment was clumped areas around the green. Often had a clump right behind or in front of ball making controlled shots almost imposable. Greens were the highlight. Not to fast but true rolls.

Played one of my favorite tracks La P twilight yesterday 7/9 with my buddy Toprank....I am always giddy like a schoolgirl when getting to play this course. Upon arrival the usual 15-25mph wind greeted us in the parking lot. After an OK tri-tip sandwhich we were off to practice a little. They have a huge putting green and an adjacent chipping green next to the driving range. One of the nicest staff starters in the club let us go off a little bit earlier than our 2pm tee time. The course conditions were above average in many areas. The fairways were as green as I have seen them with only minor patches of burn marks here and there. Very good lies in the fairways and other than a slightly wet lie I had in fairway #4 I was very impressed. The greens looked super healthy with little to no ball mark damage. They held irons fairly well. I was surprised to see that the putting green was a little bit faster than the greens on the course. The greens rolled really smooth and several holes you did not want to be behind the pin. I do remember the greens being a tad faster last time I played here. The big difference that I saw this time out was the length of the rough. It was anywhere from challenging to very challenging. My playing partner had some great drives to only end up a couple of feet off the fairway in some nasty lies with a tough stance. This is one of the things that makes La P one of the 50 toughest courses in America. I was in two sand bunkers and I would rate them just above average with more firmer clay like sand but for sure enough sand to not have your club bounce. The tee boxes on several holes were chewed up especially the par 3's but for the most part you could find some nice ground to tee your ball up on. Holes #7, #9 #16, #17 and #18 will challenge the best of players. I also noticed this now playing it almost half a dozen times is how small some of the green complexes are. In talking with the staff inside they stated that they held the US Open qualifier earlier this year and if you really want to get crazy they have their "Impossible Open" later this month in July on a Saturday. La P will challenge every iron shot, chip and tee shot in your bag...love it and wish it was closer to me...it would be my home course for sure.

La Purisima has always been a favorite and after reading the Greenskeeper reviews and having 9+ rating we had high expectations. Sadly not realized.

La Purisima has always been a favorite and after reading the Greenskeeper reviews and having 9+ rating we had high expectations. Sadly not realized.

We also played Rancho San Marcos the day prior and RSM was head and shoulders in much better condition than La Purisima. La Purisima has a huge gopher/ground squirrel problem and there were holes and dirt piles everywhere in the rough. Looks like a scene from Caddy Shack.

The layout is stellar, the conditions a bit disappointing.

Just the best, greens are as good as I have ever seen them, fairway played fast and firm, maybe, they have cut down on some of the watering, rough still penal, but, are mowing some of it down, bunkers... Continue »

Played with stickboy on Monday morning. When we arrived starter said we could go anytime because there was hardly anyone there. Where to begin,...I noticed a sign as we arrived that they were having the city championship on the 16th and 17th and did not really pay attention to it. The rough on the course is about 5-6 inches thick and in some places you can't even see your laces. This course is an excellent test but, be prepared.. The greens are rolling true and fairways are in excellent condition, it just takes time to find your ball if it goes in the rough and there is no intermediate cut either. Anyways, course is playing long and tough but it still a great course and would play it again anytime
