Day two of our Central CA getaway. We attempted to play 36 holes, but ran out of time and only got in 30 holes. I could have played more, but there was a dinner reservation we wanted to keep. Most disappointingly, it was well over 5 hours for the first 18. I felt the course conditions were better than last year with the rough not as bumpy due to gopher/rodent controls. Still, there are plenty of gopher burrows and holes in the rough and the outer areas, so you should be careful not to hit into those places because you might find your ball sitting down deep. Also, parts of the rough were mowed inconsistently with some patches either missed or allowed to get extremely longer than the majority of the cut. The fairways were lush and mowed nicely; not too tight, so you had some cushion under your ball. The greens were soft and wet, but fairly fast. I was running putts well past the holes most of the day. Sand was rather poor in most areas; mainly a thin layer of crust over hard pan. However, it was not too bad to hit from. The grill has good food; I noticed the breakfast burrito was only $8. It's huge. Too bad the grill closes down early, maybe 3:00 or 4:00 p.m., so stock up on supplies accordingly.

played 9-7. 9-8, 9-9. course in great shape as usual, staff excellent, greens true and fast, fairways showing some signs of wear, rough spotty in areas, one complaint, played three days in a row, and they did not change the tees for all of these days, Sunday, we had a 7:30, the next group was 8;20; how this course stays open is something, play this gem while you can, who knows what the future holds, a real shame to maybe lose one of the best in Ca.

Came up to Santa Ynez Valley for some wine tasting and golf. My wife and I played The River Course at Alisal yesterday and teed off at La Purisma at 930 am today. Was great weather for golf and the course is in excellent shape. Greens are ridiculously fast, and the pin placements were nasty. The rough was punishing, if you could find your ball in there good luck on your next shot. This course plays long (played from blues) and was extremely unforgiving on bad shots. That being said, we had a blast and enjoyed the course views and challenge. Our oonly complaint was that like yesterday at Alisal there was no cart girl, maybe it was because it was an early Tuesday. Also, there is no Marshal to enforce pace of play, so we got stuck behind some old guys who hit every shot OB and spent 10 minutes looking for their ball only to drop and shank another OB. Didn't have the common sense to let a faster twosome play though, but we finally went ahead on the turn...ended up with a 4 hour round.

TIP: Bring an extra sleeve or box of balls!

Played today (Friday), went out as a single at 8:15 and passed a 5 ball and a 4 ball on the front and then saw no one to the end. I love the course and play it every time I pass by. This time on my way home from San Francisco with a stop in Santa Maria for the night so I could have dinner at Jocko's. If you have a chance to play here do so, you will love it.

Played early Thursday morning and there was one car in the lot when I got there. Went out as a single and finished in a hair over 2 hours in typical Lompoc fog/mist. The course is amazing and was in very good shape. Two greens had some strange burned patches but those were toward the edges and away from the pins. They were not particularly receptive however making tucking pins impossible to get to. They rolled extremely well and had a lot of undulation. Fairways were excellent and I don't remember having anything other than a very good lie. Rough was thick an wet with the mist, making it a bear to get out of. Bunkers were very good despite the damp conditions. The tee boxes were also very good with limited divot damage. This is an excellent course and I recommend it to anyone coming out to the area.

played 6-22 early morning. they had a problem with there automatic sprinkler system so they are having to turn sprinklers on and off manually. that means they can only water during the day when golfers are out so they cant get as much water on the course as they would like to. this has resulted in the tee boxes, fairways, and rough being a little dryer then normal. fairways still have good lies, and rough is easier to hit out of because it isnt as thick. greens are still in great shape a little slower then normal but very firm and rolling real nice. sand traps here looked to be in good condition. pro shop and guys on the course always great. hope they get there system back up and running soon.

La Purisima strikes again. I returned to my old stomping grounds, only to get reminded how tough this course is.
Service was good. Girl that checked us in was great. The marine layer hung around longer and more densely than I expected, so when I needed to buy a long sleeve she gave me a discount. I appreciated the gesture, as she said because she knew I didn't really want it but needed it.
Practice range was a little beat up but balls were fair to good. And of course the practice chipping and putting greens were perfect. Definitely gave me a hint of what was in store on the course.
The course is in very good shape. The fairways as lush and full as I remember them. Greens were very firm, but they held shots from the fairway. From the rough not so much but I think that was more a result of the thick wet rough than the greens. You just can't score or at least score well from the rough - controlling distance and trajectory from the rough, given the huge elevation changes is near impossible.
Tee boxes were excellent except for the par-3's. Three of the four had massive divots and especially #3 - hopefully the staff stacks up the tees on one box for periods at a time so it gives the others a break.
The greens weren't scary fast, but fast enough to make some of the pin locations absolutely impossible. I even had a couple missed putts horseshoe and come back at me after passing the hole. But as smooth and clean as they are, get a putt started on the right line at LaP and it's going in. Good luck finding that line though.
Overall, I still have only played a few places which offers the bang for the buck that LaP does. But adjust the expectations and plan on getting stomped on, because LaPiranha will knock you down a peg or two if you're off your game. I saw something in the shop that their "Impossible Open" was coming next month, but any day at LaP is near impossible for me.

Drove up for a buddies day on Monday 6/11/2012 to La Purisma with Robstretch, RGM2525 and two of my other buddies Steve and Mack. We teed off around 10:30am playing the blue tees. They were cool enough to let us play as a fivesome. Weather was low 70's with a wind that picked up on the back nine. La Purisma is in great shape. This is as green as I have seen the fairways. Great lies ball sitting up with lush grass. The tee boxes had lush grass on them except for some of the par 3's. The 3rd hole is a tee box that they need to level and sand. The bunkers were in good shape with enough sand and nicely raked. The greens were in very good shape and were firm. Several greens even with wedges were releasing to the back of the green after landing on the front or middle half of the green. I love this challenge. The greens were putting medium fast with little to no ball marks. They were a treat to play. La Purisma is having a special just for this month where you can walk the course during the week for 24 dollars. If I lived anywhere close to here I would be playing here twice a week at this rate. This if golf heaven and a nice stern test. My only complaint at present time is no yardage markers in the fairways for walkers and very little yardage sprinklers. Overall the conditions are great...good job La P.
