Out at 7:00 a.m. this Monday morning with a buddy. It was $66 to walk! MLK holiday rate. Ouch! The course is in fine condition. Fairways were somewhat lush with a mixture of ryegrass and dormant Bermuda, giving good lies just about anywhere on the short stuff. The rough was a little sketchy with areas that were either bare ground, patchy and clumpy, thin hardpan, or lush turf; you never know what you were going to get if you missed. We both had a hard time on the greens. They were fast and the break was hard to read. I had several three-putts on the day. Overall, the greens were really nice, without a lot of ball marks because they were fairly firm. The cart girl came around as we were walking up 13 fairway; good thing, too, as I was parched. There were a couple of missing water coolers on the course and I did not stop at the turn. The slower foursome we were following let us pass them on the first par three (no. 4) and from there it was smooth sailing as we finished in four hours.

Went up to Rustic for my Quarterly Arse kicking from one of my favorite courses. It never fails me. Virtually no one there at 7am and the place is in perrrrfect condition right now and such a great challenge.

The fairways are tight and solid. The bunkers are fluffy...and it's January! But it's the approach shots and the greens that make this course such a character.

The greens are pure right now: running at about 10 I'd say and you have to be so careful and so delicate how you putt. More importantly, where you try to put your approach shot - because two feet left and right can mean a chance of a birdie or hanging on for a par. This course has amazing green design. They look benign and easy at times, but the devil is in the detail and they are running true right now. Many a lip biter out there. You really have to remain calm, have your wits about you, grind away and play conservatively around the greens.

Always remember the local knowledge - everything slopes to the southeast corner of the course (the gate) - that putts up the canyon are more up than you think - that flat is really a little up hill and that coming back down is usually going to roll 3 feet more than you think.

Finished my round with the putt of my life. Hit my second into 18 over the green and onto the little practice putting area at the back. Pin was upfront on 18 so I was left with about 100 feet, with the pin in the middle swale. Hammered it up the right and it just caught the slope perfectly - at past the cup mind you - and curled like a beauty straight left and down and into the middle for a birdie and a round of 81. Well chuffed after a 44 out. Happy times at RC. Long may you make me tingle with golfing anticipation and delight.

Someone please remind me to check the weather before getting a tee time here last minute!! Was absolutely miserable today in hurricane-like winds. It was so bad that I'm not really counting the round because balls were moving on the greens.

Understand why some people complain about customer service; guy at the front desk looked completely disinterested. However he did give us a "discount" due to conditions (didn't seem like much of one though...)

Course was in typical winter shape. Tees were great, level & still very lush. Had some divots in areas but they were for the most part filled with sand.

Fairways were splotchy-green & yellow patches galore, but they were fine to hit off of. Got a lot of roll.

Because it was so windy approach shots were hard to stick to the greens. Feel & contact-wise I hit some of the best iron & wedge shots in a loooonnng time but either the wind would take them or the green wouldn't hold them when playing a knock-down. Made for some frustration Putting surface seemed dry but ran OK, bumpier than I played last time. When you actually putted though the greens, seemingly fast, ended up being really affected by the wind. It was a guessing game all day.

Rough is nonexistent in some spots but in others it is in very healthy condition.

Bunkers are typical for Rustic-always have the rocks in them and a thin, compact layer of sand to hit out of but doable. Seems like there is a little more sand though than when I played here last.

POP in the wind?? Forget about it! Won't say because it would be inaccurate. There was no one really on the course though. Will have better enjoyment when I play this course in the spring, when it is actually WORTH every penny you pay.

Played 1-2-14 afternoon with longball23 for $28 to walk. Course is in ok shape for winter time. Tee boxes are level with minimal divot damage on three pars. Would like to see them put some sand on the tees so you could fill your divots. Fairways are dormant with a greenish yellow color but you get a lot of roll with decent lies to hit from. Rough is the worst part of this course,not very long but very patchy and ball will most likely be on dirt surrounded by clumps of grass. Fringes around the greens are in real nice shape. Greens are the best part of this course very firm and fast and rolling true.

Have not played my home course in 6-7 weeks. Walked the blues today 12/30/2013 in perfect weather. POP was 5 hrs 10 minutes. Finished with about 10-15 minutes to spare. Ton of people on the course today. The greens here are in great shape. Kudos to the staff. Rolling probably a 10.5 on the stimp with downhill putts even faster. The fringes are also in very good shape. The tees are above average with just enough coverage and are level. The fairways are very thin and dormant with patches of green here and there. You get a ton of roll at present time. The pro-shop staff was nice considering the amount of hustle and bustle with a ton of players today. I will be back again soon as I love the condition that they have the greens in.

Drive a long way and passed up way too many great courses to try Rustic Canyon. I can not recommend this course. The $81 we paid was way too much for the conditions. The staff members were unfriendly and borderline rude. We rolled up there 16 golfers deep and not one player was fully satisfied. We spend a bit of money and gamble with each other so hole 19 is important. We decided to go to a local restaurant for our post golf activities. I will say however that the cart girl was a thick red head hottie and very sweet. She was about the only shinning star in this horrible place.

The good: the greens are superb and are the best I have seen theme in long time. Firm, fast they will hold a well- spun shot. They are so true you just have to get it on line and it will roll, roll, roll. Collars and fringes around the greens and the tee boxes are all good too with fine grass coverage.

Now for the bad: the fairways are the worst I have seen them. You could ( inaccurately) say they were dormant. But the actual fairway grass (which I think is rye) is still green. Those are the patches you will see out there. The rest of the brown stuff is basically a weed that has been encroaching over the years and is now almost completely dominant. Visually it looks terrible and doesn't play much better as it is ultra thin, hard and compacted. Sand is the usual rustic thin mud.

Probably one of the most over-rated golf courses in the country. Not a true links course, and not a very well maintained golf course other than the fairly decent greens. Fairways can be thin, patchy, some lush and others dried and crusty. There is no rough to speak of along the fairways, but there is a thick rough edging the outside rims of the greens, which makes no sense except to stop errant shot from spilling out to the hazard! Stupid design. Front 9 is far better than the back 9. Even though the course looks flat, it is not, and that is what makes old guys think they can walk this course in less than 4.5 hours, but they don't. The course is built into the long-sloped canyon that extends from the the hills all the way down to the houses at the south end. It can be a tough walk for those who don't have legs, to play on pace. The lush, extensive "fringe" areas surrounding the greens are almost always too soft, grabbing the ball if too hard or high, when in fact it should be the same as the dried out fairways so that the ball can be rolled up and through to the cup as on a true links course. But this is not a true links course, so it's still a typical target-oriented shoot at the pin with spin kind of soft golf course. The dudes in the pro shop are rude and unwelcoming, not even a smile on their faces, and they don't explain anything to you, ask you whether you played here before or anything. Didn't see a marshal on the course. The only time that the course gets interesting is when the wind blows.

Played twilight today 11/12/2013 1st group off at 12 noon with a couple buddies and a nice single. POP was 4 hours 20 minutes walking the blue tees. The greens are great here. The putting green showed me how nice the greens were going to be on the course. They rolled fairly true and were firm and fast. Just loved them. The fairways were a mix bag of lush grass with only some minor brown areas. The turf was semi-lush and in good shape. The tees were in good shape as well and are mostly all level here which is nice. The bunkers are generally firm here but they have added sand in certain areas which is appreciated. Our group really enjoyed the day and it was a pleasant surprise today to not have the usual swirling afternoon wind.
