We played Simi Hills last Tuesday 5/4/21 and were able to have 2 matches in the GK Cup.

The course is shaping up nicely after recently punching the greens and in anticipation of the City Championship the first week of June. Tees are flat and lush with a few bare spots on edge, but typical;;y not in play. The fairways are much the same with nice grass and occasional bare spots along edges but not normally in play.

The greens are firm, receive shots well, and are running medium fast but true. There are a few difficult multi-tiered greens but for the most part, although challenging with minor undulations and a few false fronts are nice sized and well manicured.

Customer service is great. We saw the cart girl all day long, orders food on the turn and it was ready when we got there, and the desk guys were welcoming and friendly.

for a muni that gets a lot of play, I don't think you can do much better for the price. The marshals do a fair job of keeping the pace moving and although it is my home course, I highly recommend this to anyone coming out to Ventura County. You won't be disappointed.

Walked the silver tees on Monday, 5/10/21 in 4 hours and 20 minutes. Simi Hills GC overall is thoroughly enjoyable and in great shape. The fairways are semi-lush to lush. Although there are a few thin and brown spots, if you are in the fairway you'll have a very nice lie. There is a good cushion under your ball. It made ball striking easy. The rough is a bit mixed. Some areas are lush and 1-2 inches. Other areas are thinner; easy to hit out of. I was in two greenside bunkers. They had very adequate firm sand; easy to hit from. The greens are in very good condition. They are running medium-fast and smooth. The greens are firm. I hit several approach shots that came in very high, yet did not leave much of a ball mark. The course is a blast to play right now. It should get even better over the next month, as it prepares to course for the upcoming city tournament. Go play this gem.

Match play last Tuesday afternoon with PokerGuy0826. Took advantage of a senior replay at $19 riding. Probably the deal of the year right there. The course is as nice as I remember it. The greens were medium fast to fast, especially downhill putts. They did hold most shots but were firm enough to not leave a lot of ball marks. The ones I did fix were shallow. Fairways and rough almost always gave me a good lie with plenty of turf under my ball (except that one time I was in a divot in the rough). The sand seemed plentiful enough, although it seemed like they all had a layer of crust. Even though there were rakes (I was told they just put them out that day) many bunkers had unraked footprints. We all played the Gold tees and they were fine with no issues finding a level place to tee off from. Good times, not too far from my house, and a nice rate. I guess I will have to make time to come back soon.

Rode the Golds (6381/70.4/125) for 36 holes. 4H 20M morning POP, slightly over 4.5H afternoon POP. Clear, breezy and around 80. Played with John and Alan both rounds, and Kevin C. in the morning and Kevin V. in the afternoon for a group of 4 GK Cup matches. $26.50 to ride on the replay rate was excellent, which somewhat balanced out the $66 (including $5 cart key deposit) I was charged in the am. Select well on your cart. They have leased carts with PGA West emblems that do not have GPS, the non PGA West carts have good GPS. Tees adequate. Some lush, some not very good. But to their credit, they were sanding and filling in the weak areas as we played. Kikuyu fairways mostly good coverage with a few hardpan areas. Kikuyu rough hit and miss. Not overly tall but often the uncertainness of what you will get is the penalty. Some wood chip areas where they reduced the amount of turf they have to water from several years ago is challenging to play off of. Sand traps decently maintained with medium to large grain brown sand. MUCH better when wet in the morning round than when dry/crusty in the afternoon round IMO. Greens were excellent. Smooth, medium fast and firm, downright fast on downhillers. They held approach shots well. Customer service was very good from all. Drink cart gal around several times, open restaurant. Large practice putting green that is very comparable to the on course greens, small practice chipping area. Decent driving range with mats 5/7 days. Excellent club repair facility beside the driving range that is usually manned. SH is a fun layout to walk and play with few tees far from the last green. Front is hilly, back is flat with tree lined fairways plus a few lakes to keep things interesting. Medium difficulty course almost always in good condition @ reasonable prices. Recommended.

Our foursome teed off at Simi Hills on Monday, 3/29 late morning. It was a pleasantly warm day with nice breezes. POP was right at 4 hours. We never waited on a shot. I thoroughly enjoy the layout of this course. It has a lot of variety and fun holes. The course is just now coming out of full winter condition. Clearly, the conditions are not what they usually are at SH. However, it is very playable and enjoyable. We knew the greens were punched just 6 days earlier, so our expectations there were low. The greens were still somewhat sandy and bumpy, and breaks on the greens were a bit unpredictable. But we worked through it.

The fairways, though a patchwork of grasses and colors, were fine. They weren't lush by any means, but every time I was in the fairway I had a good lie. There was a nice amount of roll out on the fairways. No problems there. The rough is a mixed bag of short grass, wood chips and other sparse vegetation. The areas surrounding the greens were mostly thin and firm, with the occasional areas of clumpy grass. This made chipping from these places iffy, depending on your lie. Teeboxes were fine. If you're looking for smooth and semi fast greens, I would wait another 2 weeks before playing here. But it is still a fun track to play. I do recommend it.

Back in 2019, this place played as good as any course around. Conditions were mint. Unfortunately, since then, and with covid, it has been on a slow decline. Fairways and tee boxes are really beat up. Places where they have ground under repair don't look much different from the rest of the fairway. Rough is super spotty. Greens were decent but lots of ball marks. Sand traps were good. I love the layout and the staff is super friendly but for now, hard to recommend.

Played this AM as first off. Wow was it cold. Never warmed up until we finished after 3 H. Cart path only for the front 9. Check in fast and courteous. No food/beverage available early AM. Covid rules in effect around the clubhouse, putting green and driving range. Carts have a very nice GPS system. Course is in very nice shape. Tee boxes all clean/playable. Fairways are green and provide very nice lies and roll. Traps are not in the best of shape (but that seems to be everywhere). Very little rough to deal with. Greens are nice and they are fast. One of my favorite courses in the LA basin. Wish it was closer. Recommended.

Walked the Golds (6381/70.4/125) with Jesse in 4H, 15M twilight. Clear, windy and around 70. $27 to walk after noon was a good price. First time here in over 3 years. SH is a fun layout to walk and play with few tees far from the last green. Front is hilly, back is flat with tree lined fairways plus a few lakes to keep you interested. Most tees decently maintained, good coverage with few unfixed divots except for the par 3's. Kikuyu fairways were playable. Winter thin with a few bare areas. Teed off at Simi Hills at 11:40am Monday, 10/5. Pace of play was 4 hours 20 minutes. We waited on every hole. The course was "Covid" packed. I call it this, because since Covid it's very difficult to get a good tee time and a lot more people are playing golf during the week. Overall the course is in good, not great, shape. I haven't played here in several months, and the course has digressed some from that time. The tee boxes are OK. Some are unlevel and quite thin. But stick a tee in the ground and you're fine.

The fairways are a mixed bag. The front nine fairways are thin, with some bare, dry areas, and some nicely padded grass. Some of the holes on the back nine were much more lush. Overall, the fairways are quite playable but range from lush to bare, but mostly are adequate. I was in 2 greenside bunkers. One had crusty sand and the other was a little less crusty. Both had enough decent sand to get out just fine. By the way, the bunkers DID HAVE rakes in them. This is the first I've seen this.

The greens were punched a couple of weeks ago. For the most part they ran smooth and at medium to medium/fast speeds. Some greens were a little bumpy and did affect your putt. But not too bad. The greens were soft and receptive. Other than the slower pace of play, I enjoyed the round. I do recommend.
