Played 3-7-18 for $34 walking in a little under 3 1/2 hours as a twosome with some waiting on the back nine. Tee boxes were mostly level but very thin and some had a lite sanding. Fairways were on the thin side so a lot of roll out, but they are starting to fill in more from whenever they last punched. Rough was cut very short and had some minor bare areas. Was in two greenside bunkers that had a thin layer of soft sand over a much more compacted layer of firm sand. Greens were in pretty good shape firm and medium/ fast, rolling pretty true with an occasional bump.

Had a 9am tee time on Monday, 2/26 as a twosome. It was about a 4 hour round, even though we were following a "slowish" threesome. Well, the conditions of Simi Hills have deteriorated substantially since I was last here in November. We played the gold tees. Every tee box was in below average condition, with patchy grass and MANY bare dirt areas. The fairways are DRYYYYY. They have not been watering them much. There are many bare areas in the fairways, as well as some thin grassy areas. Everything is very thin and hard. The best part of the course right now is the bunkers and greens. I was in two greenside bunkers. They both had nice firm brown sand. They were a pleasure to hit from. The greens were fast and smooth. Putting on them was great. They would hold approach shots that had a good amount of spin. But other shots would roll toward the back of the green. I really like this layout, and the challenge. But the conditions of Simi Hills right now are below average. We played Balboa golf course in the Encino area last week (a L.A. city owned course) and the fairways were in better shape than Simi Hills. For the $22 senior walking rate, it was worth it. But the drought is very evident here.

Played Simi Hills Monday morning 11/13. My friend and I were paired up with a very nice couple. Pace of play was around 4 hours. Weather was perfect with a high of 76 and little to no wind. The course has significantly improved since my last time here over a month ago. The fairways are great. Mostly green and lush, with just a few areas that were thin. The rough is pretty nice at about 1 - 2 inches. Bunkers are filled with nice firm sand. A pleasure to hit out of. The greens are wonderful. Smooth, medium/fast and held shots nicely. Not too many unrepaired ball marks. The only negative is that many of the tee boxes are a little chewed up. But they are mostly level, and you can find a good spot to tee up your ball. This course has a nice variety of holes and terrain. I highly recommend it.

Played SH on Thursday, 10/5 with a 9:39am tee time. As a single I was paired up with another single and a twosome that rounded out our foursome. We were playing behind a couple of slow foursomes. Had to wait on every hole and between shots, except for the last 2 holes. This resulted in a 5 hour round. When I play here on Mondays our group is usually done in 4 hours or less.
Onto the course review. The current conditions have deteriorated since I played here a month ago. Tee boxes are chewed up some, and a little unlevel. The fairways are only in fair condition. Last month (and before that) they were very lush and a treat to hit from. Now they are thin and blotchy. I'm not sure this is due to their recent aeration or that the summer grass is dying out. The fairways are playable, but not up to their normal standards. The rough is a bit spotty and cut somewhat short - not too penal. I was in one fairway bunker and one greenside bunker. The fairway bunker was VERY firm, which I prefer. The greenside bunker was somewhat firm and thin, but OK to hit from.
The greens are the best part of the course right now. Today they were medium to fast, held shots well and rolled smoothly, with just a few minor exceptions. I enjoy the layout of this course. Hopefully, the conditions in the fairways will improve.

Played 10-2-17 twilight rate $25 to walk playing as a single on the front side in 1 hour 20 minutes and joining a three some on the back and finishing in another 2 1/2 hours. Tee boxes were in okay shape, recovering from a recent punch. Fairways were also recently punched with a lot of brown thin areas mixed in to some nice kikuya lies. Rough was cut pretty short and not much of a factor even around greens. Was in one bunker that was a little firm and thin. Greens are recovering nicely, rolling pretty smooth with an occasional bump holding shots and rolling with medium/slow speed. Overall course is in descent shape and when fairways heal up should be pretty nice.

Played the Golds (6381/70.4/125) with John in 3.5H in clear, breezy conditions around 80. SH is a nice layout to walk with few tees far from the last green. Fun layout to play with plenty of hills, trees plus a few lakes to keep you interested. Most of the tees were decently maintained, good coverage with few unfixed divots except for the par 3's. The Kikuyu fairways had good coverage with a few brown spots. Overall, nice to play from. The Kikuyu rough here is tough. Not overly long, but it is overly thick. Even a lie seemingly sitting up can be penal. The sand traps have a decent amount of medium to large grain brown sand that played well. The greens were recently top dressed, but they putted okay overall, medium speed & were consistent from green to green. They held approach shots. The customer service was excellent as usual. Saw the drink cart gal several times today. Nice practice putting green that is very comparable to the on course greens, small practice chipping area. Decent driving range with mats 5/7 days. Excellent club repair facility beside the driving range that is usually manned. Medium difficulty course in good condition @ reasonable prices. Recommended = Yes.

Played the Golds (6381/70.4/125) as a single in clear, breezy conditions in the high 80's. Amazing to play a mid afternoon weekend round a hole behind a 2some with 4 full holes open behind you. Cut 2 holes ahead of the group in front on the back then circled back... never waited a shot the entire round, awesome POP! Most of the tees were decently maintained, good coverage with few unfixed divots except for the par 3's. The Kikuyu fairways had good coverage with a few brown spots. However, I always had decent to good lies in the fairway. The Kikuyu rough is not overly long, but it is overly thick. Even a lie seemingly sitting up can be penal. The sand traps have a decent amount of medium to large grain brown sand that played well. Nicely maintained. The greens putted okay overall, medium speed & were consistent from green to green. They had some browned out areas but held approach shots. SH is a nice walking layout with few tees far from the last green. Fun playing layout with plenty of hills & trees to keep you interested. Nice practice putting green that is very comparable to the on course greens, small practice chipping area. The customer service was excellent as usual. Saw the drink cart gal several times today. Large, refillable lemonade in the snack bar was delicious on a hot afternoon. Decent driving range with mats 5/7 days. Excellent club repair facility beside the driving range that is usually manned. The course is in decent condition for mid Summer... but not nearly as nice as it was a couple of months ago. Most of the tees were decently maintained, good coverage with few unfixed divots. The Kikuyu fairways had good coverage, almost shaggy on a few holes. A few brown spots, but I always had decent lies in the fairway. The Kikuyu rough is penal. Even though it is not overly long, it is overly thick. The sand traps were very nicely maintained. A decent amount of medium to large grain brown sand that played well. The greens had some browned out areas but putted okay overall. They were medium speed & were consistent from green to green. They were not overly firm and held approach shots. A complaint I have here is the areas of encroachment from the Kikuyu collars into the edges of many greens. Fun layout with plenty of hills & trees to keep you interested. Nice practice putting green that is very comparable to the on course greens, small practice chipping area. Medium to somewhat challenging course to walk, constantly up/down rolling hills on the front 9, the back 9 is flat. The customer service was good and saw the drink cart gal several times today. Decent driving range with mats 5/7 days. Medium difficulty course in good condition @ reasonable prices. Recommended = Yes.

Teed off on Monday at 8:20am as a twosome. Played behind a foursome that was very speedy, as we rarely had to wait on a shot. The pace of play was 3.5 hours. During the morning hours it never got too hot. Just hit low 80's when we finished. The weather was perfect and the course is in terrific shape. This has to be the best conditioned municipal golf course in L.A. and Ventura counties.

The fairways are very lush. They are nearly perfect to hit off of. There a few well marked areas from which you can get a drop that were stressed. But they were getting water and appeared to be improving from the last time I was here. Tee boxes are OK for the most part. The bunkers looked good. My friend was in the greenside bunker on hole 9 and said it was thin and too firm. Not sure how the other bunkers are on the course. The greens ran medium fast and very smooth. They were soft and very receptive.

I really enjoy this course. It is in top shape, and has a nice variety of holes. I highly recommend playing this course.
