Played 9/4. Course has gone slightly downhill since I last played, but most of that are people's faults, not the staff's. Greens had TONS of divots in them (unrepaired)-most I have seen on any course. On almost every green approach shots would make big divots, but putts, once they were by the hole would go flying by on top of being already fast greens. Fairways were okay-it was a lot of patchy, different kinds of grass except for hole #4 which had some unmowed parts of the fairway. People don't seem to fill their divots around here. Tee boxes were like that as well creating unlevel lies.
Couple of bunkers I was in had good sand, although the edges of the bunkers were not really well-defined. My ball got hung up on the lip of a bunker where there should've been grass but was a mess of sand. This is especially evident on the 9th hole where the bunker (and hole in general) is very sloppy. Wherever they let the rough go wild on the hillsides bordering houses, good luck if your ball lands there. Lake between holes 4-5 was full of disgusting algae that wasn't there last time either.

Played Sterling Hills on 7/17/2012 with RGM2525, BigSwede and a co-worker/buddy who is just starting the game. I hope to get him on GK. Sterling is not in the usual rotation but wanted to give it a try based on a coupon that my buddy had. To make a long story short the coupon was confusing and the starter at the front desk did honor one of our groups for the 2:1 discount after checking with management.

The course itself was in pretty good condition. I was surprised how nice the greens were. They were semi-firm with little to no ball marks and were rolling pretty pure. I forgot some of the greens here have some undulaton to them. Kudos to the greenskeeper for keeping them firm and nice. The fairways were also nice and lush with good lies. There were only minor areas of hardpan in the fairways and chipping areas. The sand in the greenside bunkers as well as the fairway bunker looked firm on the top layer but contained enough sand underneath so your wedge did not bounce. The only real problem areas on the course were several tee boxes #15 par 3 comes to mind. They need to level some of them and fix some of the divot damage. I personally love the back nine here and am not that big of a fan of the front nine at all. Its a par 71 layout with 3 par 5's with some easy holes and a few challenging holes. A lot of the bunkers do come into play and our group was lucky to avoid most of them. From a condition standpoint I would tell others to come play it...just be aware if you have a discount or are expecting great customer service go elsewhere to play.

Issues...issues...issues. Forget about bringing any type of coupon! That will be your first issue. As the club house guy said, "i hate coupons!" It was a 2 for 1. We played super twilight. It was myself,longball23 and rgm2525, along with a friend. We had to start from the back 9, which I hate due to a progression that a course has. I feel a course progresses better from the start. Anyways, then we were told we had to finish within 2 hours on the back 9 due to a shotgun tournie starting on the back 9. When the reservation was booked, that was not explained. We got through it, but it was always in the back of my mind. My back was killing me, so that didn't help. Ok,i know,stop b$tch ing! The course was in decent shape. A few t boxes have seen better days. I like the course layout though. My biggest problem are the restroom facilities. I know, go pee in a bush,but when a course is surrounded by houses, and I don't want to get arrested for exposing myself to some 5 year old playing in their backyard, one needs to use the facilities. You can smell the urine coming outside of the 19th grill, where the restrooms are.floor was covered in ants and piss.come on man! Take some pinesol every hour or so and clean up! Overall, for the price, it,was good. I wouldn't pay $50 or more to play this course though.

played 7-16 with bigswede, longball23, and one of his buddies. course is in fair condition. tee boxes where not in the best of shape with a couple different types of grass on them at different heights made you search to find a good stance. fairways where in good shape for the most part with a few dry spots here and there. rough was not that long and not much of a factor except for a few spots where it would really grab your club. found one bunker which was a little crusty on top but good sand underneath. greens where probably the best part of the course a little firm with medium pace but rolled true.

Played here Saturday afternoon on July 7. Although it was a slow day with lots of waiting, it was a very enjoyable round. The course is in fine shape right now. Fairways are mostly lush with good lies everywhere. The rough is about 1 - 2 inches not too penal. The greens are smooth and medium fast. They rolled well. Sand is firm but consistent and easy to hit from. The only negative is that some of the tee boxes need to be leveled better. This course is very enjoyable to play. Good mix of holes and just enough challenge. I highly recommend it.

I played Sterling Hills yesterday afternoon. I had a GroupGolfer voucher that was good after 11am on Saturdays, so it seemed like a convenient time to use it. The voucher was good for unlimited play, but I only ended up playing 18. Still a good discount compared to the rack rate others were paying at the same time on a Saturday.

The weather was pretty much perfect out there, so I was surprised the course wasn't very busy. I got out there about 11:15 and they sent me right out to the first tee by myself. I did run into a couple in front of me and joined up with them on the third hole. There were plenty of foursomes in front of them, so it made sense to play together and enjoy a nice relaxed pace.

When I've asked others about this course, the excitement level is never too high. So my expectations weren't too high going in. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The course was in really nice shape and I personally enjoyed the layout quite a bit. Interesting green complexes ("amoeba-like" as JohnnyGK said to me today) and a good variety of holes. The back nine is more visually compelling and challenging as it runs up and down some hills. There are a few funky holes out here (#6 with all the water and skinny/awkward landing areas and #18 with a severe dogleg left at the end both come to mind).

The conditions were nice and green out there. The front nine fairways were nice and fluffy, which meant not much roll on drives, but very nice to hit approaches from. The back nine fairways were a bit more dried out but still in nice-looking shape. The greens were in good shape, but a little inconsistent in terms of speed. Some definitely seemed to run a little faster than others.

Overall, I really enjoyed this course and it was a great deal with the GroupGolfer discount. Not sure I'd want to pay full rack rate here (at least not on a weekend), but it was well worth the visit yesterday.

Played here for the very 1st time yesterday, 6/15/12, as a single. Used a $45 voucher via GroupGolfer.com that included a cart, small bucket, & replay (if available). I only had time for 1 round. Was paired w/a 3-some of seniors. Really nice guys who played the course before & was able to offer me lots of tips.

Pace of Play – 3.5 stars. Teed off from the blues @ approx 9:30am. Walked off 18 @ exactly 2pm. 4.5 hrs was decent, IMO, for a Friday morning. No wait on any hole whatsoever & ZERO pressure behind us. Could’ve easily finished the round in 4.25 hours or less, but our group took its time & enjoyed the “country-club” like atmosphere. Saw starter/marshall once (think his name was Steve) on the front-side & he just pretty much waved by & asked how the round was going. “June Gloom” might’ve had a factor & maybe scared some golfers away (was drizzling @ 1 point).

Tee Boxes – 3.25 stars. Very, very good boxes. For the most part, level & lush. Par-3 holes were “semi” beat up with a fair amount of divots. But that tends to be the norm for most courses. I can tell the course gets a lot of play. But the staff does a pretty reasonable job making it seem that it doesn’t. This will be a common theme all throughout this review.

Fairways/Rough – 3.25 stars. Again, very good. Well manicured & very good. Rough cut to maybe .75-1 inch. Not penal, but not FW. Still easy to recover. FW had divots 7 & maybe 2 times (in total) where I noticed brown and/or thin spots. Again, kudos to staff for making sure the FW in as best condition as possible.

Bunkers – 3.00 stars. Good. Today I found the beach (unfortunately). Both FW & greenside. More about this in challenge section. In terms of playability…front 9 = wet & “mucky”. But “June Gloom” and drizzle had a lot to do w/that. On the back side, started to dry up. However, nearly “powder-like” in all of the greenside bunkers (with only 1 exception). So, overall = good.

Greens – 3.50 stars. Just shy of excellent IMO. Nice in color, pretty big, & sloping. Not too marked up (a tribute to both players & staff fixing). Front played a tad soft. But again, “June Gloom” and drizzle had lots to do w/that. Back 9 started to firm up & play medium to medium-fast (at the end). Very well maintained greens IMO.

Challenge – 3.5 stars. For a course in the hills, its pretty wide-open IMO. You really, REALLY have to mess up to be in seriously bad trouble. HOWEVER, the bunkers (not that its “beach city”) are pretty well positioned IMO. And if you don’t hit towards the “correct” side, ball will trickle down either into a ravine, into water, or into bunker. Of course, this statement could be said for any course in the hills. But course knowledge goes a long way. And greens (esp on front) are mostly uphill putts. Thus, gotta be sure to give that putt enough juice (esp in June gloom conditions).

Amenities – 3.25 stars. Nice pro-shop. Excellent grass driving range. GPS on the carts (which I should’ve utilized/paid more attention to). Saw the cart girl 3 times (twice on the front & once on the back). Very, VERY friendly staff. The only knock here is that as a single, couldn’t have my own cart. Granted, I enjoyed sharing/playing w/the group I was with. However, it wasn’t a busy morning at all & they had A TON of carts lined-up outside. And post-round, these carts were still lined-up. Thus, I could’ve easily had my own cart for my round.

Overall experience – 3.5 stars. Really enjoyed the course. $45 voucher is a good deal, esp since it includes the cart & small bucket. And its an even better deal if you can take advantage of free replay. I would like to play again on a warmer day when ball will travel & roll & greens play medium to medium-fast (June Gloom made the air thick and the course a tad longer). If I had to pay w/out voucher & be forced to use cart, then $50 would be my weekday ceiling, $60-65 for “primetime” weekend ceiling.

Hey there golfers. Played Sterling Hills Monday 4/23. Wow, what a relief. Finally finished a round in the correct amount of time. 3.5 hrs. Teed off at 2:00, finished at 5:30. After a 4 some let us go thru on the 3rd hole we didn't see a group unitl the 17 fairway. Course was in good shape. Fairways a little soft. Greens were ok, not fast or slow. I like fast greens though. These were maybe a 8 or 8.5. Tee boxes were a lil long but flat. Overall good condition. It was worth the $20 Click4teetimes.

Played on thursday and finished in about 3 1/2 hours. Went out as a single and stayed that way as the 2some in front of me never invited me to join them, but still a quick round. The tees are being worked on and had top dressing on all of them but they still need to level some of them out. Faiways in pretty good shape and greens look like they tried to avoid full maintence on some of them and just punched a couple of greens and a couple of areas of those, so, did not really effect them. They were firm but did not put that fast. The bunkers need work, I was in 3 greenside and 1 fairway and all were very different, feels like they are getting ready to work on those as well because 2 were void of sand and 1 had too much. All in all a fun track and would play again but it is in below average condition right now. No cart girl and the clubhouse not the greatest, so bring your own beverages.
