Have not played here since 2005. I remember enjoying this course and my experience today only validated that. Overall condition of the course was very good, although the fairways were a bit long and damp, which made the course play rather long.

Staff was great. Tee'd off at 9am and finished as a threesome walking in just a hair over three hours. Very nice day on the links, Too bad this course is so far from home!

Played Sterling Hills on Saturday 4/27. Got out at 11:35am. Pace of play was right at 4 hours. Great for a Saturday. Overall, the course is in good condition. Tee boxes are mostly level, with a few of them having small issues. The fairways are lush, but also a little too shaggy. You won't get a lot of roll on your tee shot. Although I was never in one of these areas, there were several areas on many of the holes that were roped off as ground under repair. The rough was good. Mostly lush, about 2 -3 inches in length. The one greenside bunker I was in had very nice sand. The greens are smooth, but too slow for my liking. Even downhill putts weren't nearly as fast as you would think they'd be. Once the greens speed up and the roped off areas in the fairway are healed, the course will be in great shape.

Played here on 4/17/13. I had played here a couple weeks ago and greens were really slow and healing from aeration. I called early this week to confirm that they had been cut and was told they were also running fast. I was not dissapointed. it was like night and day compared to two weeks ago. Fairways are also really lush. It's a drive for me but conditions are great and worth it.

The course layout was really nice. The bunkers were full and fluffy. However the condition of the course was less than great. The greens were smooth but uncut and very slow. The fairways were full and the length of first cut rough. This made the course play extra long from the blacks. Furthermore the course is getting ready to replace their carts and many were dying or broken. That meant that when we wanted to turn and do a replay we had over an hour wait not to get a time but rather to get a cart. I would really like to come back and see what the course looks like when it is in good shape.

I generally don't comment on courses, although I play as often as I can. This course needs a comment. It started out good, nice drive up, good breakfast at the club house, then it seem to go south in a hurry.

1. Course wouldn't accept the Living Social coupon, although we had a copy with us, thankfully they had our tee time. We ended up paying twice, once to "Living Social" and once to the course.
2. We played in about 4 hours and 15 minutes, although we where visited by the "Head Pro" three times. Considering they expect a 4 hour 20 minute round, we where OK on time.
3. It actually appeared that the only reason the "Head Pro" visited, was that we had two woman in our group.

I shot 87, my friend shot 92 and both girls shot in the 105 range. We played the correct tees for our handicaps, we played under the allotted time and still got pushed by the "Head Pro". My wife's birthday golf outing, was fine outside of the poor customer service.

For the record, four greens fees (times two for the error), breakfast, beer and drinks and snacks at the turn, will now be going elsewhere.

Weather: 68 degrees 5-10mph breeze throughout the day

Fairways: 7/10 Very pleasantly surprised to see a Ventura County course with green and semi-lush fairways this time of year. Only minor hardpan here and there and some mud spots but for the most part very nice conditioned fairways

Greens: 7/10 Poa greens that were a bit firmer on the front side. Greens running close to a 9 on the stimp. Some minor bumps but putted decently. They were holding irons and receptive shots with spin.

Rough: 7/10 Lush in most parts of the course, nice shape

Sand Bunkers: 6/10...was in a couple bunkers nicely raked with clay like sand, moist in most spots.

Tees: 5/10...they were all lush but mostly every hole the tees need leveling.

Layout: Decent layout would like to see one more par 5 thrown in. Some birdie holes on the back nine....front nine a little more difficult. Had a terrible front nine today and a very nice back nine.

Overall: Impressed with the conditions...for sure worth the 25 dollars we paid via golfnow

Played Saturday 2/2/13. Played on a Golfnow deal for 50 bucks with cart, can't beat that. Although there is a some areas that are ground under repair, the fairways are lush in many places, and the green roll well. One of my favorite tracks to play.

Played here on Tuesday 12/31. The course is in good condition. From tee to green it's very playable and enjoyable. There are some areas on the course that are roped off, as they have been reseeded to repair damage. But these areas are good to play from, and soon will be open to cart traffic. The course has improved significantly from just a few months ago. I highly recommend playing Sterling Hills now.

Played Sterling Hills today with the wife, wish I would've read previous review prior to playing. This has always been one of my favorite courses, but like other comments it has gone down hill. The greens were the only part of the course in good shape, the fairways were a disaster for the most part...soggy here, muddy there, hardpan here, etc. I heard that the owner also own Camarillo Springs and instead of using a dedicated superintendent for each course, he is only employing one for both. Don't know if it's true or not, but it would make sense as I heard Cam Springs is crap too. I hope that the owner understands that Sterling has been and can continue to be a solid, value course in Ventura County, but he needs to make better decisions. Easy for me to say because it's not my money or investment, but I won't play here again until they clean it up.
