FYI...Brookside Nay Course #2 just aerated and sanded the greens this Monday (3/11/19). May want to give it 2-3 weeks to recover.

Preparations for the Arroyo Festival have begun today as well as aeration of the greens for course #1. So for the rest of the week, the course is playing as an 18 hole combination of BOTH courses 1 & 2. Kinda odd and unique, but at least its not an abbreviated version of 15 holes like they had it during last years festival. They even have temporary signage and score cards printed up! That being said, course 1 is probably gonna be extra screwy for at least 3+ weeks.

Greens are firm and fast. Spoke to the Super this week who told me that there are no plans to aerate the Koiner greens until the week of the musical festival in June.

I reviewed Wilson last April and would usually not submit another until several others had contributed their opinions, but after playing here last week, I discovered a couple significant changes that have altered and will continue to alter the front 9 for many years (decades) to come. They removed TWO mature sycamores, one each from hole #6 and #7. Each tree played major risk v. reward roles on how a player determined how to best navigate each hole. Maybe I'm over reacting about the losses/changes, but those trees had been a nemesis of mine since I began playing here. I'll miss the sense of accomplishment having hit that perfect high fade or baby draw drives that were required get to the best positions on their fairways...or get buried or blocked in the woods (more likely)...RIP sycamores.
Other than that, the greens are quick and true. Tee boxes are decent, and plenty of sand in the bunkers. But the rough was extremely penal, very thick and tall. Easy to lose balls if you don't pay attention to entries and difficult to play out of. I'm sure its from the over watering due to recent high temps. Still a fun round...but with a little less challenge/character.

I was hesitant to play the "new" Sand Canyon CC after reading the previous ratings from almost 2 months ago. But my group found an offer online which we couldn't refuse...even just to check out the new changes. First the good. I've always enjoyed entering through the RR gates and the winding driveway to the classy clubhouse. From the road the Valley course looked mostly green but there were obvious signs of maintenance around the rough and waste areas. But that was to be expected. The pro was super friendly and even gave us free range tokens to warm up and tee off whenever we were ready. I hadn't played here in years and don't really remember the holes but the first tee box (like most of the tee boxes) was in pretty good shape, which really raised our hopes for the rest of the course. It's not an extremely long course but the fairways were pretty tight, and look even tighter from the tee boxes. The bunkers where mostly full and had thick wet sand and were very challenging. And the greens were pretty good. Not very hard yet held the irons shots without making much of a divot...strange. Putts rolled mostly true but a little on the slow side. The not so good. Maintenance crews are still a major presence throughout the entire round. The fairways had decent coverage and were in need of a mow but center fairways were fine, just as you move away from center the problems begin. The rough was hardpan and funneled most stray shots into the dry waste areas or brush. We decided that any shots that would be deemed in the rough were played as GUR just to be fair. Overall my general opinion is that it's great to see this place reopened and the major improvements and additions the crews were working on. Conditions are still sloppy but good enough to play and have a decent time...given the right day rate. SC is still challenging where club selection is a premium. If you don't expect great conditions, getting around here is still enjoyable. You can see the vision they have planed and are starting to implement which gives me high hopes that they can somehow keep this place watered over the summer and someday get the Sand Canyon back to its former best. But I wouldn't expect that to be possible for at least until the fall or another year. We'll be back!

Its been awhile since my last review of Wilson and while playing on this beautiful sunny Spring morning I found myself thinking how much the all around conditions have improved. I don't remember the fairways being so full and lush. There were a few bare and spotty areas but nothing like usual. The greens were fast, smooth and true and held approaches well. Bunkers were a bit on the thin and wet side but very playable. Normally I don't mention the tee box conditions but most were noticeably full, trim and neat. All combined for an extremely enjoyable round. (once the 4some in front of us sped up) Plans to aerate the greens is coming soon, so play 18 then grab a schooner of Stella and a plate of the famous chicken wings. Wilson is Spring muni golf in L.A. at its finest.

This was my first chance to return since almost a year ago and the conditions were some of the best I've played all year. We couldn't have asked for a nicer day, cool, partly cloudy skies with a gentle breeze. First off, the greens were great, a little on the soft side but very fast and smooth. Approach shots held well but a few became plugged. Fairways were very full and lush that didn't offer much roll but the coverage was excellent for the conditions I'm used to. Last time I played my partners thought it played too short, even from the back tees but lusher fairways seemed to lengthen the course significantly...for me anyways. The only problem conditions wise were bunkers are a little on the thin side and some of the tee boxes were a little too lush. It's unnerving sticking a 3-4" tee in the ground and only seeing an inch peeking above the grass. There are a nice variety of holes that require a good amount of thought to choose the correct clubs. The facilities and clubhouse continue to feel high end with the 19th hole is a great place wind down before my long drive back to the SG valley. It always feels like a treat to play here, hope it isn't another year before I return.

Overall course conditions continue to be similar as the previous reviews with a couple main differences. They have mowed a lot of the first cut of rough, so now you can actually find your ball if you happen to miss the fairways. I don't know when they did it but it looks like they micropunched the greens recently. I played last week and the greens were great, now they're very bumpy and much slower and sandier than usual. They should be fine/healed within a week or two. Still one of my favorite local tracks...just a heads up.

It's official, Santa Anita has been turned over to a brand new "regime". The rumors turned out to be true about the change of ownership. We quickly found out when we didn't see our old friends Ed or Gary at the starters window. Found a lone stranger/starter in an empty golf shop who could only take cash and a closed snack window/coffee shop. (Rate has increased to $30) This turnover probably explains the recent downturn in conditions for SA. I was told that his management group also runs Los Amigos and Eagle Glenn, so I'm hoping they can turn this place back around because the current around course conditions are far below par. Our group noticed that many trees were clearly "marked" for something, I hope they don't do anything too drastic. I'm willing to be patient and give these new guys time to bring Santa Anita (a former Southland Golf Course of the Year) back to what once was a favorite course where I grew to learn and love the game ...and hopefully make it even better!

Played 6/14/16 after finding a great online rate. Before booking, I obviously checked this sites previous review, which didn't sound great but definitely worth giving this place a shot. First off, I've always enjoyed driving through the gates of RR. It felt like I was entering someplace really special. But all I saw was browned out/dead fairways...wth?? Turns out I was overlooking the Mountain Course which turns out to be CLOSED (not yet indicated on this site).
Staff and clubhouse continue to be first-rate, and teed off on time. It was nice too see some green color that marked the fairway and greens, but my goodness, what happened to this place??? I always thought of RR as a premium track, but it's tragic to see what has become of this course.

Tee boxes were level and fine but my first tee shot was flushed, straight down the fairway...and kangaroos off and through into the hazard. Not a good sign. The fairways turned out to be thin green tufts of grass atop asphalt. My ball striking was above average today and I had very few clean shots to the greens. Just about every fairway shot was extremely thin and challenging. My partner brought along the divot mix from the carts to fill in our approaches and I we just laughed at the idea futility of the idea. The greens are the one saving grace. As stated in the previous review, they remain very firm and medium to fast in speed and rolled very true...but no divot tools required. This is a fun/challenging layout but they must be under some very strict watering conditions but have made care of the greens their priority.

This used to be a fav track but was fiscally restricting, but I wouldn't play here again without the deep discounted rate. My partner said he's never coming back and several folks from other groups we spoke to stated similar comments. I still recommend RR for now because it's still playable/fun despite the current conditions. But I'm weary of what may become of RR this summer if they don't find a way to properly water and treat her. I didn't see a cart girl all round, so definitely BYO(?).

I played here in a charity tourney over the weekend and found the previous course condition review by JohnnyGK remains spot on. Most of our group had never played CC before and we all enjoyed the course conditions and helpful staff. Definitely not a "bombers" course. Course requires quite a bit of local knowledge to score low, for several of my best (straightest) drives often went through the fairway and into the rough/hazards. The weekend rate was lower than I expected and was surprised at the seemingly low player traffic. Our group seemed to be the only players that afternoon besides a couple single players buzzing around. Not sure how they can afford to maintain the good conditions but I wish this place was closer to me, for I would definitely make it part of my regular rotation. The seclusion and views reminded me of the high priced tracks in Solvang and Santa Barbara. Cross Creek GC is a hidden gem.

A quick update after my last review a month ago...the greens were back to speed today. They're running fast, smooth and true. Why do they always "punch" the greens when they finally have them just right. Better play Wilson before the end of March!
