Carts are holding up well and the practice facilities are good. The tee boxes were all a little shaggy but had good coverage. The rough has been cut down but the clover and trimmings still will play hide and seek with your offline shots. Once located in the rough you were still able to hit from it better than you'd think. The fairways were firm and patchy grass wise with different types on each hole. Fairway lies ranged from good to poor with clumps of longer grasses mixed in with the bermuda that is trying to come out of hibernation. Most of the traps were in need of maintenance with the fairway traps being firm and weedy. The green side traps were thin damp sand and difficult to hit from. The greens were in good shape but every single one was full of poa everywhere. The poa trimmings from the mowers covered your putter and shoes when you walked off to your cart. They held well struck shots and were slow at first but sped up to near normal by the end of our round. The rates are still better than the local competition but the playing conditions are lacking. Great layout with some challenging holes. Hopeful the drier and warmer weather helps them out with the conditions.
Early morning Sunday four hour round on a very busy course. The staff is friendly enough. The practice facilities are good and usually very crowded. I was hoping that the really old fleet of carts had been replaced (they had not). The carts lack any gps, windshield, cooler or ball/club washer. They'll get you around the course but drive like an old truck with no power steering. The tee boxes were all in pretty good shape with good coverage. The rough was just BRUTAL from the first to last hole. If you were a foot off the fairway you were not going to find your new Pro V or anything else. The grass (but mostly clover) was anywhere from a few inches long to a foot! The fairways were still spotted with bare dirt sections throughout the round with many tight lies on most holes. The ball would have plenty of run off the tee right into that foot long clover!!! The traps were trimmed nicely but most were very damp or had standing water. The sand in most traps was okay with some having lots of rocks and pebbles. The greens are definitely the attraction here with most being in really good condition. Good shots held well for the most part but a couple of the greens were a little firmer than the others. They rolled at medium speed and were cover with poa on every hole. There were a few deer feeding on the front nine and hundreds of turtles in the ponds on the back nine (the highlight of the round). The flat front nine is quite a bit shorter than the back nine and has several forced carries. The back nine is a hike for those who like to walk with hills and substantial distance between holes. The setting and layout of this course are really nice - just wish the conditions were.
Early 4 hour round Sunday morning Oaks/Creek nines. The tee boxes were in better shape than in previous rounds but the par three tees were all beat to death. The rough has gotten out of control again with wayward shots impossible to find. They were cutting what they could on the Oaks nine but I guess the rain hasn't let them keep up. The fairways all are dark green with excellent coverage and nice lies. The traps were all in need of maintenance and some even lacked rakes. Those traps with rakes in them needed to be raked by those that had been in them. The greens are in great condition with the exception of the first hole on the Oaks nine. Almost looks like they are letting it go to seed (reminded me of a course I won't mention). The greens were all quite a bit slower than usual and surprisingly had few ball marks. I'm not sure if they've been watering the course or not? With the rain not having been around for a few days the course was still cart path only on a few holes.
Early am 3.5 hour round on a course that keeps getting better and better. Staff is very friendly and welcomes all guests. The carts are still from the last century but will take you around the course just fine. No windshields on a cool day is a bit uncomfortable and there is no gps. The tee boxes were all in great condition with good coverage. Rough was really not much to see but if you wander too far off the fairways you'll find nasty clover over a foot long. There are many forced carries to manage during the round. The fairways have excellent coverage with many tight lies on most holes. There are some holes here that resemble the Kapalua fairways with 30-60 yard runs from left to right which can be very frustrating. The traps are all in top condition with ample quality sand and plenty of rakes. The greens are probably the best conditioned we have played recently. Though they were a bit firm they held fairly well and rolled nicely with some tough to read breaks. The course sits down away from the homes in this custom community with great views. The management has kept rates very reasonable if you can manage to get a tee time. Highly Recommended
Early am round in around four hours. The staff is friendly and helpful inside and on the course. The carts are still the same old fleet they have had for years and years. They have basic gps yardage to green and are really showing their age! The practice area is well kept and adequate. The tee boxes were all in pretty nice shape with the first actually being dry for the first time I can ever remember. The rough was cut before we got out and was at a nice length where one could find their ball and put a decent stroke on it. There are numerous shots that require forced carries on many of the holes. The fairways were actually pretty dry considering the amount of rain we received in the area. The creek actually was flowing high from the front nine thru the back. The fairways had fairly good coverage but we had many lies in sections with little or no grass. The traps ranged from well to poorly maintained with nice to little sand. There was quite a bit of maintenance going on front and back. The greens were pretty quick as they usually are but seemed to have very little break. There were very few ball marks on the large to very large greens. The pins were set on more than half of the greens close to the edge where there was quite a bit of slope? Good shots near those pins would roll off the green altogether. The views and wildlife up in this area of the valley make this a course to play at least once. The rack rates have been increased to above the average of other courses in the area. With the conditions the course has to offer a round during the week is acceptable, but I spend my money on the other courses on the weekend.
Early morning Sunday round in about 4.5 hours. Staff is friendly and carts we had did not have any gps. The tee boxes had fairly good coverage but a few were a little beat up. The rough was not too long but noticeably thinner than the last time here. The fairway lies were mostly very tight and with the drier weather the thinner sections sat your ball down making for challenging times. The traps that had sand were in very nice condition (those that were still lined with black matting had NO sand in them) still? They have been doing some major work on a few holes which has now dragged on for over a month. If you found yourself in a lined trap you had to remove your ball and drop. The greens were a little firm from the cold weather early in the round and a little on the bumpy side. Most greens were in really good condition as they usually are. The greens held good shots and were rolling fairly quick. The green fees remain very fair and they continue to work on the course. Hopefully the work on the course continues to show with improved playing conditions.
Early morning 5 hour round on the Creek/Stone nines. Course was frosted over at tee time which kept the carts on the paths until 8:30 am. That slowed play as well as a group which included former MLB player David Justice. The tee boxes really show the amount of play thid facility gets (not in a good way). Many of the tee boxes were nearly just sand. The rough is a few inches long which is about right to keep bad shots from straying ob but short enough to hit from when you found yourself in it. The Creek nine still has a couple of holes where the fairway turf just does't fill in completely. Most lies were very good with numerous unfilled divots on a few holes. The fairways have dried up enough to allow for some roll off the tee. The traps are mostly well cared for with adequate sand which was pretty damp still and many needed to be raked. Hitting from the traps was not too penal if you found yourself in one. The greens were rolling very quick with way too many ball marks on several of the greens mostly on the Creek side. They held good shots with a little less break than usual. The staff is always on point and the pro shop is well stocked. Justice wants to be remembered as a Braves player!
Sunday morning round in 4 1/2 hours on a cold, windy and raining day. The staff is really friendly and pleasant from the pro shop to cart attendants. The carts are very comfortable with some having gps and others not. The tee boxes were all in okay condition with several being very beat up and thin from all the hackers. The rough has been cut down to a manageable length which allows locating balls in it not too difficult. The rough will definitely cost you some yardage if you find yourself in it. The fairways continue to fill in nicely with the same type of grass from the first to the last hole. There are still spots on some of the fairways that are a little thin but very much improved over the past years. The fairways actually have dried up some and allowed for roll on good tee shots. The traps are in progress from holes one thru eighteen. Many of the holes had the traps well trimmed and were lined with black matting in preparation for sand. If you were in one you had to remove your ball and drop? No mention when calling for tee time nor when paying green fees. It will be great to see them when they're completed but it would have the right thing to do and make the paying public aware of the construction. The greens have firmed up and quickened up to their usual great condition. They rolled well holding lines with less break than usual on this damp morning. The course is really looking good and with the conditions will bring those back that remember how nice this place was in the past.
Played the Oaks/Creek nines on a nice Saturday afternoon. The early morning frost delay pushed our start time back an hour which pushed our finish into the darkness. I asked why we would be charged the morning rate when we were not starting until the afternoon. It took a little complaining to have them charge us the afternoon rate. We had scheduled the tee time to be able to finish before darkness. Anyways the course was still CPO which added to the long round but it was obvious it was the right choice. The entire course was all GREEN from tee to green and in between. Most all of the tee boxes were in great shape with good coverage. The rough was not too long but locating your balls in it wasn't real easy. The fairways were all really damp and soggy in places. The lift, clean and place was necessary on almost every hole with no roll and plugged fairway shots. The traps were in need of a raking and many had standing water in them. The greens were in nice condition but many had tons of ball marks that were not repaired. Shots into the greens held well and they were still fairly quick with less break than usual. The course gets so much weekend play and many of those out there are not really good at fixing their marks or raking the traps. I'm sure that the CPO rule will be lifted by the coming weekend which will speed up play. Highly recommended
Early morning cpo 4.5 hour round on a damp course. Staff is friendly and helpful. Some of the carts have new gps but hard to judge at times from the cart paths. They have adjusted tee times to ten minute intervals which helps a lot with the pace of play. The tee boxes are all level and had good coverage but were shaggy with the inability to get a mower on them. The rough is thick and damp but you could find your ball if you ended up in it. Hitting from the rough was very penal though. The fairways are filling in nicely with thin sections and spots here and there throughout the course. The traps were all in excellent shape but many are still full of pebbles and stones. The grounds crew was working all morning on replacing the sand in the 18th hole bunkers. The new sand was nice and white and thick but we did not get to try it out. The greens were very quick for being so damp with much less break than is usual here. There were few ball marks and most of the greens had total coverage on the front and back. The head of maintenance here now was previously at The Golf Club of California in Fallbrook since that course was built. We had played there a couple of weeks back and found it to be in excellent condition. We are looking forward to seeing the playing conditions continuing to improve here to where they were years ago. The layout of this course is really great and the rates are very reasonable.
Four plus hour morning round with another group of hackers. The staff is always great and helpful. The carts are still holding up but showing their years (no gps). The practice green was closed for enlargement as they are doubling its size. The large tee boxes were all in really good winter shape and level. The rough really does not come into play as there is very little and it is not penal at all. Most of the trouble on the driving holes are forced carries with creeks, trees and bushes. The tight fairways all had the best coverage I've ever experienced in my rounds here over the last fifteen years. Every fairway has nice green turf and fairly easy to hit from.
The traps were all in excellent condition with plenty of quality sand. Greens were top notch rolling very smooth and quick. There were very few ball marks on the large greens throughout the entire round. The greens do have quite a bit of slope in sections on most which can be difficult for some. JC resorts has taken over management of the Club and kept the rates reasonable in comparison to others in the North County. The facilities original Super has moved on the the sister course in Murrieta (the old SCGA) , now The Golf Club at Rancho California. Hopefully he will bring similar playing conditions of that course to standards here at The Golf Club of California! I was really surprised to see this facility in such great condition and definitely recommend it to all.

Played an enjoyable round with Dan, Gary and Chris here in the Golf Moose outing this morning. The facility reminded me of a few courses from the past and the layout of St. Marks CC and the now closed Carmel Highlands. The outing was a little overwhelming as there were not enough carts for the entire group. The carts did have gps but it took us awhile to get the thing to start working. The tee boxes were all good size with level lies and good coverage. The rough was cut fairly short with much of it being kikuyu. It was pretty easy to locate your ball and advance it if it wasn't covered with leaves. The fairways all had total coverage with many ties lies which could be difficult to play from at times. The traps were all very well groomed and the green side traps had real nice white sand. There were a few holes where the traps really came into play, especially if you had not played the course before. The greens varied from really nice to a little below par. All of the greens were very quick with slope coming into play on most putts. Most of the greens were real smooth but there were a few that had a thin spot or two and were a little on the bumpy side. The greens ranged in size from fairly small to rather large throughout the the round with slope adding to the difficulty factor. The front nine was much easier with pretty straight holes that were all fairly flat. The back nine is where the fun starts with a few blind shots and dog legs on the par fours/fives. I never knew that there was a course in this area - probably because it is a private club. Speaking with a couple of the employees I heard that the course is looking for a super as they presently do not have one. I really liked the layout of the course and would think about a membership if I lived in the area. Thanks to the members for allowing us to play their course.
