Golf Course Reviews: California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Utah, Florida, Hawaii!I see the nice white, pristine looking bunkers and think these are a cut above the vast majority of golf courses in Southern California.....until I try to hit a golf ball out of them. I think I'm a pretty decent bunker player. You open the club face and hit an inch or so behind the ball and let the sand pop the ball out of the bunker with a soft landing on the green. Not these bunkers. What they appear to do is pack the sand down very tight throughout the bunker and then put a thin layer of loose sand in the middle. This would seem appropriate for a fairway bunker. In a greenside bunker the ball will always come to rest in the middle of the bunker, you'll never have a fried egg or be plugged in the face of a bunker. I watched shot after shot of mine and my playing partners being unable to penetrate the packed down sand. There simply was not a deep enough level of loose sand in the middle of the bunker to play a proper sand shot. The leading edge of the sand wedge bounces off of the packed sublevel of sand resulting in a skulled shot time after time. This is the dumbest set up of a greenside bunker I've ever seen.
We used to book this place several times a year but have been a little disappointed the last few times. It seems like the course maintenance has been a little lacking lately. A lot of brown grass and bare lies on this course recently and it's only June. It was obvious by the weeds and grass growing in the bunkers that the sand has not been turned over in a long time. However, it is high quality sand and in spite of the neglect the bunkers were playable. Complimentary range bucket was nice but I'm not sure it was worth $65 plus the gas required for an hour and a half drive to get get there. I expect better from a resort golf course and I bet the casino/hotel next door charges resort fees to stay there.
The bunkers (except for hole 1) are as hard as concrete. In no way are they playable in any traditional way of getting out of a bunker. If you don't want to do any maintenence, that's fine but stop pretending to be a golf course. Just do us all a favor and fill in the bunkers with dirt along with some grass seed. That would be the respectable thing to do for your customers.
Generally speaking, this is still one of the better courses in the area. When the guy at the desk said that the green fee was $94 on a weekday, I aked him if the course was in pristine condition for this price. He said it was. It wasn't. This is premium pricing but not a premium golf course. There were just too many cases where I had to declare my lie unplayable. At least half of the bunkers meet this description. I like to play by the rules of golf and when I have to remove my ball from the bunker and set it on grass, I'm essentially forced to cheat due to poor maintenence. Not what I expect for $94. Spending $10-15 on gas just to get there doesn't help matters either. These bunkers are full of weeds and have seen no maintenence in years. Don't even try to blame this on COVID. There were also too many grass areas that were burned out or bare. Finally, I'd suggest comparing the GPS numbers to your range finder. There were many discrepencies. Try making the needed repairs before jacking up the rates. I'll post pictures in the photo section.
This was a mid week round played a couple of weeks ago. Not much in the way of value at $95.
TEE BOXES: Generally good condition. I've seen worse but nothing outstanding about them either.
FAIRWAYS: A little on the thin side and wet. Far too many bare spots. I never used to cheat, but I've decided to start moving my ball to grass areas and bumping my lies. Why should I let poor course maintenance ruin my round of golf?
ROUGH: There really isn't any. You are either in the fairway or you have a bad/bare lie in the trees.
CHIPPING/PITCHING AREAS: Like the fairways, far too many bare spots.
GREENS: They've always had nice greens. They were in good shape with the exception of a few blemishes here and there.
BUNKERS: Although it appeared that there had been no maintenance done in several days, it was a pleasant surprise to see that the bunkers actually contained sand. A rare occurance these days in Southern California.
PACE OF PLAY: The reservation receipt said the expected pace of play was 4 hours and 40 minutes. We did a lot of waiting around and were over 5 hours. Anyone that teed off 20 minutes later than us probably played a few holes in the dark. Never once saw a marshall.
SNACK BAR: I had some of that government issued currency in my wallet that says "This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private". Los Serranos doesn't really care because they are like the airlines and don't accept cash which leads to another issue. I paid $12.50 for a hotdog and a soda. That seemed a little steep and after thinking about it for a while, I realized that she never showed me the touchscreen used for the credit card transaction or gave me the receipt. This made me wonder if she also added her own unauthorized tip. I guess I'll never know. If I ever decide to return to this golf course, I think that I'll just skip the snack bar.

This course doesn't change much. They've identified their niche and do it well. As long as you in or near the fairways and out of the traps, you're going to get decent course for the money. What I really like is that they don't run you through the pricing gauntlet. It's the same reasonable price every day. You don't need to be a certain age, you don't need to have at least two players, you don't need to bring an email, you don't need a coupon book, and you don't need a discount card. I walked on as a single and was teeing off 5 minutes later. Originally, I checked on Golf Now for a tee time, but couldn't find a course that was nearby that would sell to a single. Los Serranos and Eagle Glen have no idea how many times they've lost a sale because of this policy. I always seem to end up at El Prado when I want to play at last minute round of golf.

Course in very good shape overall and always a bargain especially for Orange County. Greens were a bit bumpy from recent punching but very playable. Greens not bad enough to blame for any lost shots.
Roger Dunn Birdie Card users beware. Check your receipt when paying. You are entitled to a 40% discount from the $35 greens fee (no discount on the cart) which is $14. Your receipt will only show a $13 discount. It has been pointed out several times to the indifferent employees who claim they can only do what the computer allows them to do. Yes, it's only a dollar but a deal is a deal. Somehow, I think that the people that run the computer would address this issue if the discount were mistakenly $15 instead of $13.
What a disappointment. I played here a while back and remembered it being a nice course. According to a member (who said he won't be renewing) and a course employee, the new management has determined that it's not necessary to water the fairways anymore. Hardpan everywhere after all the rain we've had this year. Target golf is not much fun when you hit the target and the ball bounds forward another 40 yards into the brush. Drives in the fairway that stay on the course are rewarded with hardpan lies. I can't imagine what this place will look like in July.
Goofy Golf on steriods. Greens were excellent. At least it was cheap to play there.
The course is in great shape, but I'm in agreement that the greens are a bit too fast for the average mid handicap golfer. The course was considerably more playable when I played there in November. I consider myself a pretty decent putter, but I had six 3 putts and one 4 putt with a total of 42 putts. Six of those were greens hit in regulation. Considering the amount of break to contend with on these greens, the speed was a bit much for my tastes. I managed a birdie-par-birdie rally (not due to the putter) at the end for an 88, but felt I played much better than the score indicated.
Played on a Tuesday morning at a comfortable pace. No evidence of overbooking. Course was in excellent shape considering the winter maintainance that was occurring. Some parts of the fairways had topping/manure spread out, but we just played these areas as GUR. An excellent value with use of the Birdie Card. Complementary Course Guide was included.
