Played Sunday 7/1 with 7 others. Course was in good shape. The thing that I like about Dos Lagos is that they hit the greens with water early in the morning, knowing that because of the amount of sun (course is on the east side of the 15), and due to canyon winds, they tend to dry up a bit quicker as the morning/afternoon round goes along.

Greens were still a little bumpy (showed signs of recent punching). Fairways were in mostly good shape. Very little bare. Off fairway was cut a bit thicker and made a bad shot pay.

Tee boxes were pretty good. Cart, came by 3 times during the round. And the Sunday Special (round w cart, drink and deli sandwich) was a good deal.

Remember when you get out to that 91/15 area, you are bound to run into a bit more wind, especially as you begin the back 9, so plan your shots accordingly. The good thing about playing the back 9 is that it is a bit more open, so those wind shots don't kill your score.

So we (4) hit Goose Creek with the beginning of twilight on a Sunday. I think they must space groups out every ten minutes, which sure helps pace of play. Our round was done in 4 1/4 hours and we only caught up to the 3 in front of us at 18. The tee boxes were in good shape, The rough & fairways were very good as well. Some sand traps had a little bit of mud accumulated. Greens were punched a couple of weeks back and it looks they could now roll them as there were some bumps in the road that made our putts go awry. Also there were many ball marks on greens (people...fix yours and one other). The course itself was in great shape and was easily one of the best in the IE. This is a very fair but challenging track. Be aware of flag positions on greens and take with you the hints cheat sheets from GK. It really helps out. A great afternoon of golf can be found at Goose Creek.

Here's the scoop with Strawberry Farms. It is a great layout, but even staff conceded that in an effort to cut costs, overseeding was cut in the last go-round. As a result fairways were uncharacteristically bare or thin in many areas. Additionally, beacuse I'm sure they had 2for1's from the golf show, it got a lot of play and as a result me and my buddies were constantly repairing more than one or two green divots. The greens though were in decent shape however. Rolled smooth a bit quick and on some holes were a bit bumpy. Greens are real greens with two cuts of rough around. Pace of play on a Sunday was fantastic (4 1/4 hours). Staff appeared to be cut back, but was nonetheless friendly and accommodating. Finished my round with a sense that I have played a really great course that was hit by the economic times we now live in. Although I would not recommend paying the rack rate for this course ($160 weekend prime), I would recommend playing a reduced rate and did enjoy my round and would come back.

I come back at least a couple of times per year to play a few Carson Valley/Reno courses with my dad and brother. Silver Oak is a great place to start. Challenging, yet very fair and has always been in great shape from tee to green. The front nine winds in and around the mountains and requires some well placed shots. The back is more like a Palm Springs desert course that winds through housing. The toughest hole (IMHO) is on the back nine (#13). It's a par 4 that dares you to take your 2nd shot over water onto a very shallow green. Get's me every time. A very fun course to play and don't forget Bully's down the road after your round!

Played Sun 9/16. You play 15 and come back and do three as a few holes are under construction. Course was in pretty good shape considering construction. Didn't notice the ball marks on greens as much as some others reported. Some bare areas across fairways, but its the end of summer. I think this course will come around nicely after construction is completed. A fun course to play with some beautiful views of OC. Red Dot had us in what I thought was a fair price for this course "as is". Will come back and play again.

Had a Sunday 11:30 tee. On the course at 11:45, finished at 4:30. Under 5 on a weekend is ok with me. Course was actually quite impressive. I think the course is now being run by Jay Miller (who brought Cresta Verde back to some semblance of respectability during his 5 years there). The course is a fun canyon course to play with exceptional fairways and some deep rough. Stay in the fairway. Wasn't to impressed with the traps as they were hard. Only got into one of them though! Greens were slow and ran true. A couple of surprises to my reads, I think due to canyons. Quiet and peaceful, with hawks soaring overhead. Really a pleasurable experience. Would love to go again soon and would recommend this to other courses further down the 15. Great job so far on this course. Can't wait to see what happens in the next year or so.

Played Sun 7/8 late morning. I don't know how new this is but Black Gold is guaranteeing a 5 hour round or less even on weekends.... yeah... in Orange County. They are serious about it. Had a marshal out that actually marshaled. Finished in 4 1/2 hours. The course was in good shape and was really a fun course. Landing spots from the tees were fair. Tee boxes were fine. Fairway bunkers seemed well placed on a few holes almost begging you to hug them around small doglegs. I got suckered into one. Traps were well kept although lacking a little fluff. Greens were med/fast, with only a few unrepaired ball marks. Looks like they were punched a little more than a week ago. Remember that most greens roll towards Disneyland. Really enjoyed our time out on the course.

Played Sun. afternoon (6/24). San Juan Cap weather was excellent. Just a really fun course in South OC. If you haven't played here, give it a go. Reasonable $$. Tee boxes in good shape. Fairways were well kept. Fairway rough was pretty consistent all the way around the course. Greens were med speed and held approaches. Has some funny holes like 10 with a tree in the middle of the fairway. 15 (I think) is a great par 5 where you have to rely on the flag out there on your tee shot. Bottom line, best bang for the buck in South OC.

Played w foursome Sunday afternoon (7/1). Friendly staff and very likable starter who kept up with sending groups out on time. Got going and noticed a couple of things right off the bat. Fairways were a bit bare and brown. Not what I was expecting this early into summer. Interesting course that winds in and out of the mountains. Some fun blinds. Some interesting short par 4s that require some well played shots to avoid bunkers. Speaking of sand (in one and watching buddies try to get out of others) we all commented on how unkempt they were. Hardpan with little sand in the traps. The bunker I played out of actually had rocks. Greens were in pretty nice shape (med/fast & true). Good pace of play (finished in just under 5 on a Sunday with no push and no real abnormal waits). If playing an afternoon, make sure you use the cart gal as you don't really get back the clubhouse until after 18. Grab tons of water/gatorade as it's getting hot out there. Wouldn't say the $130 rack rate is worth it. Could play Trilogy for less. Played RedDot ($65) so all-in-all, enjoyable day out with the guys for a very resonable price. They need to work on those bunkers though! (I know, I know...stay out of them then.)

Early AM round weekday 6/27 before work w buddy. Nobody within 2 holes on either side of us. Played at great pace. The greens actually have improved (ball-marks, bumpy) since the last time I played a few months earlier. Some aerating of fairways beginning. Tee boxes need work. Sand inconsistent. The course is short, but requires you to back off shots due to doglegs making it a good challenge. The thing about DeBell is that it is true muni, but is probably the most interesting and fun playing muni at a very reasonable price. Side note...go there warm as that range is just not right.

Played early Monday AM 5/14. Round went quick at 3 3/4 hours. Course (fairways) is coming back from dormancy nicely. Sand (especially fairway bunkers) was in need of some touching up. Hardpan on the bottom and "cave-in" fluffy near the edges. Greens were less than impressive. Unpredictably fast in places, and bumpy due to un-repaired divots. Perhaps greens would be in a little better shape if allowed to grow and slow a bit. Of course that's why I don't get paid big $$$ for course maintenance/management. Still, not bad to get out of there in less than 4 hours. A fun round before working to pay for the next round.

Played Wed early AM. Round took 4 1/2hrs. Not bad considering allowing 5s to a hole. Was not pushed and wasn't waiting. Sand was fluffy, greens were in decent shape (a little bumpy) but good speeds and pretty true breaks. Some fairways were well manicured and tee boxes well kept. Lakewood seems like a flat simple course, but there is enough length and differences in views and pin placement tweaks to make the round enjoyable and challenging. If picking between Skylinks, El Dorado, Rec and Lakewood for an early AM (before 7:30) midweek, I'd pick Lakewood.
