Golf Course Reviews: California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Utah, Florida, Hawaii! The Resort is in fantastic shape - tees, fairways, and greens are all running clean and smooth, no major brown spots or excessive divoting on the greens. One complaint is 17 - it is a stupid gimick hole, completely out of place on the course. Staff is mostly locals who have been there a while and they are fantastic, they just love the game and that makes it enjoyable. The pace of play could be accelerated, but it generally plays under 4 hours.
The Emperor wears no clothes!! This is the season of my discontent... I have not posted favorable reviews about 3 of the other 4 pga west/la quinta courses, and this one absolutely took the cake. The customer service bordered on obnoxious, the course played like a mine field, yardage was poorly marked, greens were a mess, pace of play was a joke, we saw the cart girl 3 times - once on 9, once on 18, and only once on the course itself. Other than the practice facilities, there is nothing positive to write about this course - I was so sad, I almost cried, I remember back when this course could command a premium rate, now it fails in comparison to Silver Rock, the Norman, and even Terra Lago. Just sad, sad, sad. PGA West needs new ownership.
Absolutely the most under-rated course at the PGA complex. It was lush, fast, well marked, great greens, great customer service - absolutely cannot say enough about this course and its facility. Practice areas were tour caliber, the course is so fair, so playable that my 16 handicap brother-in-law fell head over heals in love with the place, even though he couldn't break 90. That is the mark of a great course!
Other than the poor customer service, this course is one of my all time favorites. Even for the end of summer, the greens and fairways were in excellent shape. Pace of play was fine, course played long and seemed to gobble up balls that rolled of the fairway, quite punitive in my opinion.
Far better than the Dunes, the Mountain had faster, smoother greens. No real complaints - there was even a cart girl in the late afternoon. The course was empty, but the thing that really surprised us was that there was virtually no yardage markings! You had the 100-150-200, but that was about it - you had to pace everything off and that caused us lots of grief and aggrevation :(
Oh boy, this was brutal - over 5 hours, teeing off at 8am on Saturday the 1st of September. The greens were in terrible shape, probably due to the course's inability to cut them too short because of the heat. They were bumpy and slow as sin. The worst, though, was the pace of play - I have played munis on Saturday afternoon that were faster.
Wonderful course condition, play here as often as I can. Two big problems, the course is very monotonous, many holes (6 and 9 / 4 and 15) are exact replications of each other. Also, the staff is absolutely terrible. Bad attitudes, poorly informed, generally sour people - entirely unhelpful.
