Nice hot day out at Hansen Dam with Nick, Ron, and Woody. Watch for large potholes driving from entrance to clubhouse. As you drive up to entrance, a big sign that the course uses recycled water. For a muni in Los Angeles, conditions were above average. Fairways were good shape with plenty of coverage. Rough was not too thick, but very sticky. It was hard to do any bump and run as the aprons swallowed up all approach shots. Sand traps were only fair, some maintained better than others. Looks like maintenance gave up on some bunkers. Drivable 1st two holes can slow starting pace. Greens were in good shape, but putted maybe at a 8. Customer service was pleasant and efficient. For $27 bucks to ride, a good value with POP under 4 hrs.

Played twilight with fellow GKers RGM2525, Cthuyen & Mswshu. Thanks to Ron, Kong & Woody for a fun afternoon! $27 with a cart, which was needed because it was 101 degrees when we finished @ 530pm. Played the Blacks (6669/71.8/121) in slightly less than 4H. 2nd time playing here, played with the late TTucker2 back in 2008. I came away with a much better impression today than I did on my 1st visit 7 years ago. They have flopped the 9's since I played here last. It is now a little strange in that the 1st 2 holes are both short par 4's. While only super long hitters may drive #1, many people are going to wait for the green to clear on #2, which guarantees a slow start. However, the course flows well from #3 on. The tees were OK, level, decent turf, most of the par 3 divots have been filled in. Both the fairways and the rough were fairly lush. Much better than I remembered. Nice lies in the fairways and the kikuyu rough was long enough to be penal, tough to make solid contact even with mid to shorter irons. The greens looked great, but they do not putt as well as they look. They were fairly bumpy and medium slow to putt on. A little kikuyu creeping in along the borders. An added challenge is the kikuyu fringes, which will catch chip shots like velcro. The only thing really negative was the traps. I was in one that was pretty bad, and none looked like they had been raked recently. Typical L.A. muni in that regard. While there are no holes with a "wow factor", this is a decent course for a county muni. Customer Service was good, efficient check-in and the snack shop was decent @ the turn. I wouldn't play here often, but I won't go another 7 years between trips.

Played early August 5. Paired with two walkers, I took a cart. 3.5 hour round. Very surprised how well it's maintained. Everything is in above average shape considering the CA drought. Fairways, greens and tee boxes - all are good. Didn't find the sand today, but the traps looked ok.

Starter and Lady in the snack bar were both nice. I golf once a week at Woodley, but this may be my new spot. Not terribly difficult (I usually play the white tees) or visually stunning, but Hansen Dam works for the casual golfer like me. Price is pushing my budget - $42 plus $4 single rider fee and $2.50 Golf Now charge put this round at $48.50. Still, it's an easy recommend.

Hey there fellow golfers. I played Hansen Dam today, Mon June 29th. Well, where should I start? Lets start with the green fee, way too much for this course, $42 and that was supposed to be an internet deal. That's probably why it wasn't much play that day. Or it could have been the 100 degree weather. The course is pretty flat with a few elevated tees and greens. The greens were way too slow and soft from too much water. Maybe they didn't want the heat to burn them but we saw standing water on a few holes near the the green side, not good. No drought conditions on this course. Besides the greens being slow and damp the course had a few good holes but overall it's just a regular course with not much challenge or fear factor. There weren't any bare spots or terrible tee boxes. I'd play here for $30 with a cart on the wekeday but no more than that. It's a fun course and most of the holes are different. Play well, until next time.

Hello there golfers,
Today I played Hansen Dam G.C. in Sylmar, CA. This is a city course, and I usually don't play city courses too much, I seem to recall a rate increase to city courses recently, and they have more complicated rate schedules with some folks being residents and non-residents.

So we got an online time for $42 with a cart at 9:24am Monday morning. Really not a good price, but a friend suggested we play here. So upon arrival, the course was fairly empty (maybe because of the heat, it was high 90's).

The first thing we noticed was lots of watering especially on the greens. I would guess that the maintenance crew was trying to keep the greens from burning up, because they were all soaked. The grass was cut in the morning, so the grass was even, but they grass was also long and wet. This made them very very slow. Maybe this is needed to keep them healthy while so hot. But for us, it was a poor putting experience. No sign of ball marks though.

The fairways were pretty good, about what you would expect from a muni course. Minor issues here and there, but no real issues.

Bunkers were just OK, the sand was compacted a bit. Also rakes were scare, at least the beaches that I managed to find.

The rough was fine, but be advised of the kikuya grass, it props the ball up while your feet tough the ground. This caught me off guard several times and ruined a few shots for me. Hitting the grass first will cause it to grab the club and hit a weak shot at best.

No other issues, not sure I would return except for an occasional how do you do round.

Hansen Dam is a Very Nice Muni...Compared to the other Muni's in the area. Hansen is out of the way & therefore gets much less play then some of the other courses (such as Encino/Balboa/Woodley.) Fairways are sweet right now, rough is grown out. Greens have recovered from punching about a month ago. Pace of play early is good, on weekends I won't tee off after 8:00. 1/2 players can usually get out early without a res even on weekends. Sat 5-30, a beautiful day, a 2some was behind us and we tee'd off at 7:06!
Do they have a couple funky holes? Yes (#1), but it's still a fun track, very playable. Golf Now has specials for all the LA City courses (fairly new) so take advantage of it.

Sand was decent, evidenced by my getting out of two of them on the first try. I think this is an underrated course with an overall interesting course design (it's not flat and repetitive), compared to other local muni's. Fairways more than adequately lush and tee boxes were fine. Really, no big complaints about any aspect of the course. Would like to come back soon.

First time ever at Hansen Dam - really nicely surprised. $43 to walk and with a push cart - and the push carts are of the very nice variety. A real good price for this course. The course is greener than any other LA Muni I've played this year. The greens are in really nice shape, too - rolling medium fast and mostly free of ball marks/debris. The sand could be better for sure, and the rough varies from hole to hole, but nothing impossible. Tee boxes had no major problems so all good there. Apparently they've switched front and back 9s, so the first two holes I did actually find rather poor. Short par 4s downhill into a deep canyon, then sharp uphill rises to the greens. Nothing terrible I guess, just not very exciting to open the day. After that however, the course is great - especially the back 9. Nice, wide fairways, some cool views, and generous green complexes. I played pretty poorly though so I'm looking forward to returning sooner rather than later to rectify that. POP was slow - a little over 5 hours, but the group in front of us took ages on each green.
