Played Fri Oct 16th at 730, check in fast, got out 30 minutes early, putting green still closed, it looked great and was being maintained, just don't understand. No one in front of us or behind us so no waiting and wasn't pushed, POP was 354, and again all us, my partners had allot of balls in the rough and they are hard to find as the rough was on the long side. The greens were supposed to be punched mon oct 9th and they must have been small holes and they were basically healed. Tee boxes were good with the exception of a few par 3's, fairways were quite green, as mentioned rough was long and took a long time to locate ball, I was in 6 traps and got out of each in 1 shot so can't complain, but they nneeded attention. Greens were recovered, as usual very, very wet and spunggy, hugh foot print marks and several half plugged balls. The greens are very difficult, I only made 52 feet of putts the entire round with an 8 footer being the longest, no 3 putts so many of my putts were 1 to 2 foot tap ins, the mountain and surrounding hillside makes putts look up hill or down hill when the are flat, and visa versa. I like the layout here because several holes you do not use driver and have to think off the tee.

Played Friday Sept 18th at 7am, check in fast and friendly. Putting green is still closed?????? We followed 2 2 some and after the 1st hole never saw them, POP was 410 and that was all us, there was no one in front of us and no one behind us. Since that was the case my partners lost many ball and spent allot of time looking for balls. The course was very empty. The course has a sign and says it will be closed Monday Oct 5th for aeration. The course was just way too wet, fairways muddy spots and greens were so soft and wet it was impossible to fix your ball marks. Balls would plug in the greens to the top of the ball. I know I am over weight at 197, but I would walk on the greens and leave 1/8" to 1/4" foot prints and then you could see the water seeping into the foot print. They had their BBQ going when we finished at 1110. The parking lot only had about a dozen cars in it when we left. I still like this course and will be back, just hope they dry out the greens a little.

Played here Fri. 9/11 Booked an 8:30 tee time on their website. Normally you can use the LA county senior card to play for 28.75 with a cart but now they do not honor it between 7:00 and 9:00. There is a sign announcing that they are closed on Oct. 5 to punch the greens.
The conditions are consistent with the previous reviews except that the greens are very soft along with being way over watered. We had several shots plug on the greens and they are very slow.
Pace of play was 3:45 for our threesome and we never waited nor had anyone push us from behind.
Typical covid precautions in place with masks required around the clubhouse and putting green closed. Still get single rider carts ,no rakes ,no ball washers and they have the device on the flagstick that you lift with your putter and the ball comes up and out. Food and drink available with card payment only.

Played mon aug 31st at 8am. They are now inforcing the back of the la senior card and not accepting it from 7am to 9am,, played with my step son so paid $42. Was paired with a 2 sone. Snack bar is open with tables outside, we road in 1 cart they used 2. Bathrooms no restrictions for number of people. This is the 3rd time I have played here in a month and course knowledge is very important as I shot my lowest round here at 85. Tee boxes good, fairways good rough very long, not in any bunkers, and greens like foam rubber and soaked. When you walk you actually kick water. 2 of my approach shots plugged on the green where only 3/8" of the ball was above ground. POP WAS 3:26 They have a BBQ for lunch and guys were at the tables outside, maybe starts at 11 or so. I do like it here and will be back, hopefully before 7am to get my LA Seniors discount.

First out before 6am. Check in was easy and efficient. Having read the most recent review, I expected the greens to be soft, but that does not begin to describe them. We actually left foot prints on the surface ! ANY shot into the green stuck and created a ball mark. Because they were so slow it was a struggle to gage pace.

The rough was also very inconsistent. Some very thick and easyt o lose your ball, other spots, were thin/bare. Bunkers were better than expected, the two I found had a reasonable amount of raked sand.

I enjoy this course, but must confess that today I did not have a great time, The greens were just to soft. Also had an unusually large amount of back nine play which slowed things down a great deal. Oh Well, life is not always perfect.

Played Fri Aug 21st at 6:15, check in fast and got out on time, came back soon because I like the price with the LA SENIOR card and because I just played it and wanted to remember the holes. It really helped as I broke 90 thanks to remembering the holes. Condition was about the same as last time. This place is very difficult to putt, I shot 89 and I counted the stroke "loss" for putting and it was 6 strokes. Walking on the greens it feels like foam rubber, wet and spongy , then being on a mountain you think it is up hill or down hill and it is flat. I will he back and hopefully play early again, POP was 3:26 BTW at that early tee time there must have bee 30 dear, really cool bring your camera

Played Fri Aug 7th at 7:12, check in very fast, was also disappointed putting green closed, just don't understand that. I haven't been here in 2 years and our group have the L A County Senior card and wanted to use it, $28.50 to ride with senior card. Got out on time. Agree with past reviews, some tee boxes were unlevel, fairways pretty good shape, rough was very penal and hard to advance ball, bunkers not great, and the greens were very soggy and soft. Actually left foot prints in them and splashed water when walking. Very slow by 16 the sun was out and dried the last few up so they speed up a little, but not much. This course takes course knowledge, everything slopes away from the mountain and putts break that way also. There are many large trees that can get in the way. We played the whites and there were many holes driver was not required, ,but I like that as you have to think while playing. I didn't shoot well but want to come back soon since I just played here so I can use some course knowledge. POP was 4:23, not great , but the front 9 was much faster than the back 9, we caught a 4 some on 11 and then waited every shot.

I would like to add that the rough is very penal, ball sits down and takes a good strike to advance the ball a decent distance as the grass is thick bladed and long. The staff here was very nice and very accommodating. A fun course that I didn't like the first time I played it years ago, but liked the layout yesterday and will be back.

Finally getting around to my review of Marshall Canyon after finally checking it off the list of SoCal courses I've not yet played. Met up with three friends there on Saturday with a 10:30ish tee time and a gorgeous day to greet us playing from the blue tees.

As for the check-in particulars, was disappointed to see the putting green closed, but the range was open and in some pretty shoddy shape. Mats about as beat up as you'll find anywhere and only about eight stalls, but enough to get the job done. Snack shop is open and we were pleased that there was cart service a few times out on the course.

Very interesting and somewhat quirky layout with a good number of doglegs (only left mind you), forced and blind carries, and some tree trouble that really makes you need to shape your shots. It reminds me of some somewhat off-the-wall little private tracks, but the conditions don't allow for that imagination to go too far. If it was in pristine shape, it's funky design would probably be considered quite charming and challenging, but alas ...

Let's knock out the worst of it. The greens, at least this past weekend, were so deeply spongy and squishy that you needed to knock the stuffing out of the ball to get it to the hole. With that in mind, foot marks and ball marks were found in abundance. Balls meandered like a drunk trying to find his way home. They were however receptive to good shots.

Fairways were mostly good with some lush areas, plenty of thin areas and a few lousy spots. Rough was varied in length but mostly playable and often more favorable than the thin parts of the fairways. Only found one bunker and it was somewhat heavy but nothing too terrible. Tee boxes beat up like Tyson's first few title defenses, but also a lot of uneven areas, which was mitigated by tee box markers that were at least twenty feet wide.

Of course people do love talking about the wildlife at Marshall Canyon and the number of deer and other critters did not disappoint. They simply don't care about you and live their best lives and it's kind of hilarious to watch them in between shots. That was nice, as is the surrounding scenery up in the mountains around this place. It's a very nice area to play a round of golf, only disappointing a bit that the conditions don't quite match the environment.

But still, I would like to play here a few more times with some course knowledge and hopefully catch it on its best day like Buster Douglas style.
