Review- July 26, 2007

Played Aliso Viejo Golf Club Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m., the twilight rates were $27.00. After taking off to the first hole you will notice the long drive up past construction (cart rental is a must) since the course is being torn up due to a new housing project being built next to it. A formally 36 hole course, this 18 hole course is situated along a mountainside in Aliso Viejo, lots of hills to go up and down in. There are about 3 small lakes to navigate around during course of play.

The greens are in immaculate condition, very green and the rough is tall yet maintained. The rough swallowed up tons of balls from me since they were lush and overlapped each other. I would at times catch my ball rolling into the rough and as I walked towards it’s location I could not find it at all. There were many times my ball rolled not too far off the cart path, but the lushness of the rough ate all balls headed in it’s direction. The view from the tees was great, many views overlooking Orange County on a clear day. Mostly Par 4’s, there is a nice Par 3 hole, 157 yards straight down a hillside. Since we played an evening time there were only a handful of golfers on the course making it one of the more quieter games I’ve ever played.

The only downside to the course was we were given a bum golf cart causing us to pull the cart up hill for a few holes until the battery gave out and we had to wait for a replacement. The delay cost us at least two holes. We played about 12 holes in 3 hours and had to stop due to the receding sunlight. I only played this course since in a year it will be turned into a private club and the usual weekend rate of $75 is a bit to expensive I think since due to the construction they make you repeat a couple holes to make a full 18. But for $29 in the evening and low traffic on the course, the price is reasonable. A truly great location marred by high price and construction near the site. Oh, and the pro shop was pretty bad in service, no acknowledgement as we checked in and when we called the shop when our cart died, it sent me to voicemail. Only after calling back multiple times using different extensions did I get a hold of someone to send a replacement cart to us.

First time playing here and it is a shame they are taking this course private. Beware before playing that the surroundings are torn up right now building homes and fixing the course. Holes are well designed and reward both length and accuracy. Only bad things: you replay first three holes for your 16-18 and a par 4 turned into a par 3 while they fix the green. The current green is cut out of the middle of an existing fairway and is a giant lump. Even with these things, course was so much fun and pace of play was fantastic... all for $70. Course will be public till March 2008. Spoke to a single lumped in our group and he is joining the private club. Info to join for anyone interested: $25k down, $495/month. No food/bev requirement. Unlimited golf, only have to pay for the cart.

Massive amount of construction going on. Only 15 holes are open. You play 1,2 and 3 twice. The 14 of the 15 holes are very good. On one of the holes (can't remember which one) they have created a temporary green in the middle of the fairway. Turning the hole from a par 4 into a par three. The other 14 holes are in great shape. Lots of elevation change. It will be interesting to see what happens to this course when the construction ends.

Another hole has indeed opened (the 4th is now the new par 3) so you only replay #1-3, and they’re three cream puffs. Still torn up around the perimeter, especially around the first few holes, but the course itself is in decent/good shape … well worth the green fees (some deals are available via internet). We played Sunday twilight for $39 and finished with no problem. Not terribly challenging, at least not to the posted slope rating which is way off, but quite enjoyable. But don't tell anyone so we can keep the crowds down :)

I play a lot, and wasn't sure what to expect at Aliso, but I had a blast. No matter to me to have to replay holes, the price was worth it. I liked having a second shot at them. This place was greened up well and the putting surfaces were smooth. After the round the head pro told me how they were knocking out the Poa grass and thats why I saw some spots. I would definately recommend playing here and they have a new hole opening on 4/23. Can't wait to come back. No problem with the pace and it's interesting how they designed two configurations to accomodate for the project underway.

Since they no longer have a full 18 the pace of play is horrible, Play 14 holes and then have to play the first 4 over, I don't even know how they arrange tee times to make this work. Eventually they will be back to 18 holes. I would wait to play till then.

If you don't mind the construction noise and dust flying around, this is a fun course to play. Overall conditions of the course is pretty decent. I just wish my fellow golfers/hackers would fix ball... Continue »

I just wish my fellow golfers/hackers would fix ball maks on greens more regularly. I thought customer service by everyone I came in contact with was excellent. A good pace for the round as well - about 4 hours.

Played on 3/5. Loved the course. Construction can get annoying, but oh well. I suggest playing it before it gets turned in to a private country club.
