Played super twilight ($50) on Sunday, 8/18/13, at 4PM with 3 guys I met at the course. Up and down reviews for course conditions here keep me from coming more often, but in reality I've never had a bad experience here and I like the course layout, so I wind up playing here about once a year. Conditions today were pretty good - better than I expected after recent reviews.

In general, all aspects of the course were in good shape, with minor complaints/ difficulties scattered around. Greens held shots and rolled well at medium speed. There were a few ragged edges on the greens and some had a ragged look with scattered debris etc. from ball impacts, shoe droppings, etc., but playability was generally not affected. The upper tier on Hole 6 was open, recently resodded, so was very soft and slow compared to all the others (one of those "automatic 2-putt" situations). The green on hole #8 was recently closed for rework - it was open today, although in a few places where I repaired ballmarks it seemed like the turf was unconnected to the dirt base, like a carpet laid over the ground - very strange feeling. Otherwise, greens were fine.

Fairways were generally dry and firm and offered god lies. Rough was pretty benign, although it doesn't take much to go from rough to "gone" if you get offline into the natural areas. In two sand traps and coverage was good and sand very playable. Tees were generally fine, with par 3 tees more beat up, as usual.

Saw the cart girl twice and a ranger a couple times. Course was pretty busy but we got around in just under 4 hours before it got too dark to finish on #18. Several areas scattered through the course were soggy and mushy, indicating where the sprinkler system/drainage needs attention, but these were very localized. In some areas cart paths have become cracked and uneven, likely due to localized land settlement and/or erosion. Overall a very pleasing setting and good conditions. Highly recommended.

We played today with a 2PM starting time and played in 4 hours. I was fearful that perhaps the greens had not recovered? But was informed that they have a new superintendent and should be to our liking. Unlike the previous review, the only green today that seemed overwhelmed was #16. Perhaps being a short hole and receiving many short iron shots (and many people not fixing divots) it gets more abused? Overall the greens were really good. #8 has all new grass and is a bit shaggy but it plays fine. Personally, the biggest damage that is apparent is the many many divot marks that were either not repaired; repaired to late or improperly repaired. Sad to see so many golfers that don't bother with fixing divots. Perhaps our golf announcers should point out the pros and caddies fixing divots when doing telecasts? Maybe some people would listen? Tee boxes all level and fine. Fairways were in good shape, providing good roll and good lies. Sand in the bunkers was good in some and bad in others. Not consistent throughout the course. Overall I would not hesitate to go back and play again as I felt the course was very playable; customer service great and the course itself is just a great layout.

First time for me playing AT. Even if I wasn't particularly impressed by the layout of the course after the first 3 holes, from the Par 3 4th I started to enjoying it and completely loved it from the 9th to the 18th. An incredible collection of golf holes so different one from the other and each one with its own peculiarity.
I think the actual conditions of AT are not at its best. Greens (not all of them) are still recovering after being infested by fungus, and had some patchy areas and several unrepaired ball marks.
Fairways, bermuda grass, had some browns areas, maybe due to the season. Even if I played in the afternoon I found some of them wet with the ball not rolling like it should.
I've visited three bunkers and the sand was perfect, soft and fluffly.
Golf Cart features GPS, even if and old style one with no map of the hole but just distances.
But it worked perfectly to me.
Hope I'll have the chance to play again AT when it will offer its best and pristine condtions.
A fantastic and absolutely not boaring fair layout.

Haven't played Arroyo Trabuco in a few years, despite the fact that it is one of the closer courses to my home. I had heard it had gone downhill a bit, but saw recently through reviews here on GK that it has apparently improved. Thought I would give it another try with a couple friends.

Took advantage of a super twilight tee time for $40, which I feel was a decent deal. Course is in decent shape with a couple disappointing problems. The course generally has very tight lies in fairways, and many opportunities to use side boards and the like to run the ball up on approaches which is kind of fun. Greens are kind of slow, and most are in good shape, but the affects of the fungus problem linger. The uphill par 4 6th hole has a green where they had the back portion roped off and the front part of the green is in rough shape, splotchy and uneven. The par 3 8th has a temporary green in front of the regular green...and is playing only 85 yds from the whites, what a disappointment.

Sand was a little too firm for my taste, but they looked consistent (was only in there once). Tee boxes and rough good shape.

We did not see a cart girl during our round. This is understandable considering our late tee time, but the pro shop said she stays out there fairly late and we were kind of waiting for her. We saw her near the clubhouse after our round and asked her if we could use our drink tickets for a water/gatorade in the pro shop. She was about to leave, but offered to go into the closed snack bar and grab us some drinks. That was so awesome, I wish I remembered her name. Great service.

So, my overall thought is they need to finish the work they're doing on the greens, and this course will be "back" in my opinion. Still, it was fun and I probably see myself coming back more often.

Last time I played here was about a year ago and the course was in terrible shape. It has improved greatly since then.

I regularly visit the range here during the week. Big grass hitting area (Wed-Sun) and mats on Mon-Tues.

Tee boxes were average. Some Par 3's were hurting

Fairways are tight lies and in great shape.

Rough was lush green grass and medium height

Bunkers were a bit hard but lots of sand so they were playable

Now the greens, some are in great shape and rolling true and others are fungus infected and patches all over it with green filled sand. I must say they are better than a year ago but this course has always struggled with the greens for some reason.

I would not pay more than $40 ever to play this course, until they improve the greens.

Been several years since I last played here. POP was good, no more than 4 1/2 hours for our 4some. Course is interesting, with a variety of holes - short, uphill, par 4s, or long downhill par 4s and 5s, that play shorter than distance. There is a bail out option on most approach shots, e.g., stay right to avoid deep greenside traps on left. Although there are lots of OB areas, it's easier to keep ball in play than say the back 9 at Tijeras Creek (see holes 11, 12, 14). The fairways were cut very short, so lots of roll out. Sand in traps was deep enough to be fair. My difficulty was with the slow speed of the greens. I had just played on some fast greens last week. I couldn't hit my lag putts hard enough to get close to the hole. Left myself lots of 6-8 fters for par, which I mostly missed. From what I heard, the greens were a mess this past year due to poor conditions. They are finally on the mend. Only 1 green, either 11 or 13, still looked very patchy and in bad shape. #18 has been leveled so a tee shot doesn't roll right to left across the fairway into the lake. Weekday senior rate (age 60+) for $55 plus $7 for bucket of 50 range balls not too pricey for a more upscale round than the typical muni course. Easy drive as it's just off the 5, Avery Pkway exit. Will return soon.

Played here for the first time on Sunday, May 19. Teed off at about 6:50 am in a three some and played in about 3 hours and 20 minutes. Great pace. I paid $91. I am told the price went down to $78 at 10:00.

The course was nice. Looked like Bermuda fairways, not too lush but a decent hitting surface. The layout was interesting. I played the blue tees, about 6400 yards, and the carries over the many canyons were not bad even though they looked it sometimes from the tees. The sand traps were good. The rough was non-existent although the wild areas came into play just outside of the rough. The greens were generally good. I understand that they lost the greens but have been working their way back. There were some areas on the greens with fungus damage but they did not really come into play unless you were well away from the hole. Overall I thought the greens were good if very difficult to read.

A little pricey but the layout was unusual and difficult. I liked the course and would like to play it again.

Played 5/1/13 @ 7a. Arroyo is one of my favorite courses. POP was great, just under 4 hrs. Starter got us out a little early, customer service is always excellent. Tee boxes were even throughout, there were no uneven spots from the blue markers. Fairways are a little thin with a lot of tight lies. They were aerating a couple of them. Rough isn't too long and doesn't penalize you at all. Sand traps were really good as usual. Greens were rolling good, there were a couple that had some patch work on them, but the hole locations avoided them for the most part. I recommend having lunch at O'neil's after your round, they have excellent food there. And if you sit outside, you're right behind the 18th green. I always have a great time here.

The greens still have issues, but at least you can see they are working on them and there are many which have lots of grass, I think will take another month or so, and with some hot weather and rain, they should be fine. Otherwise the course is about the same.

This has been a cold winter, so not a lot of opportunity for grass to grow. Bunkers were good and the staff as always was wonderful !
