Bailed outta work early again for a round of golf, this time at the Destroyer, PM rate was $26 walking with a decent PoP of 4:20. As 24hour mentioned, the course is in decent shape right now even with low water levels in the ponds (and the one left of #13 which is now hard and dry). I know they plan to aerate soon but today the uber-soft greens were not the highlight, bumpy and pockmarked like I've not seen in a while. We had several putts move offline due to the poorly repaired ball marks and soft spike marks ... the hazards of playing PM golf I guess. Never had a bad lie in the fairway, rough can be thin in some areas, and the only bunker I visited was firm but playable sand over hard pan ... gotta hit those ever so gently. Course layout very challenging from the blues with the wind and all, lot's o' fun having to play strategic golf from tee to green. Hard to score here if you don't get off the tee into the right position, unless your short game is right on and you can one putt consistently. If you plan to play there soon, ask about aeration. Sorry that I didn't get the specific date but I do know it's this month. For better conditions, play early, unless you can handle uneven greens.

Played this morning in a nice POP of 4 hours. Would have been better (we were 3rd out) but group in front of was extremely slow/lazy ( I sincerely hope you read GK) for no good reason. Course is in very nice shape. Tees clean and peg friendly. Fairways had been mowed and I had good lies all morning (though they were soft and provided little roll). Rough was 1" and wet/sticky if you got off the fairway. Bunkers were clean but sand was hard, not soft and difficult to play from. Greens (though soft) were in good condition and chipped/putted very well (high shots in just plugged rather than released). I overheard someone say that greens were going to be punched and worked on in the coming weeks? Customer service excellent at all levels. We had breakfast after (first time I have eaten there) and the portions were large and well priced.

Played on a hot, not-so-windy Thursday morning, 7/30/15, at 1045am with GKer stickboy. Course was in overall good condition, with greens being very good, good lies in fairways, rough not too tall, sand adequate/raked/playable. That darn kikuyu was so thick on some tee boxes that stances felt squishy and uneven. Played with an older (really!? older than me??) local couple who had lived in Los Alamitos for 52 years - they were very nice and played a fun short/straight game and were very engaging partners. This course is fairly wide open and fun, but I got in ongoing trouble by driving offline and having a lot of tree troubles. Front pins are tough with encroaching bunkers and slopy green fronts. Course was pretty busy on a Thursday morning and pace was 4.5+ hr. Vince was hitting it solid and had a good round. Recommended.

Played here for the first time Sunday July 26th. 10am tee time. POP was ok at 4:45 for that time of day. The course was in really good shape. Tee boxes, fairways, rough was very long and penal, 2 of the 3 traps I was in had good sand and the green were real nice. I saw pictures and was really looking forward to seeing the destroyer on the par 3, but for some reason it was gone. Hopefully I'll play there again and it will be back. I liked the course, there were no holes that look odd. Had fun.

Played 7/1 mid-day. Arrived and the parking lot was packed, clubhouse line at check in was 6 deep at the register. I was fearing a 6 hour round, but surprising got around in 3.25 hours. What!?! Must have caught the sweet spot. Nobody in front or in back of us all day.

Conditions are above average except for the greens which still show signs of punching. Sand was fluffy white. Very quiet and peaceful on the back nine that runs against the airfield.

Bummer: The have taken the big destroyer battleship out of the water hazard on the par three. It's behind the green on stilts.

No brainer recommend.

Teed off at 9am on Tuesday and the pace of play was good at 4:15. At least 5 greens have been recently punched with small holes the other greens were fine. Would wait a another week for them to heal. Fairways were in good shape and bunkers were good. A little pricey compared to some other courses in the area but pace of play is usually good and easy to get out as a single.

Played on Friday (6/19) with a tee time of 2:45pm as a single. Was warned at the pro shop that a new guy was the starter and may cause some delay. Soon enough, the starter forgot to get me out with a threesome I was suppose to play with as he had trouble handling the back up of 3 groups on the first tee. He admitted his mistake and let me tee off alone so I can catch up with my group. Not a big deal as I caught up by the second tee.

I didn't find the bunkers all day so I can't comment on the quality, but I saw that they weren't properly raked (not the courses fault). Greens were medium/fast and rolled true like they always are over there. Some thin spots on the fairways and rough but did not affect lie at all. Some of the tee boxes weren't level.

Pace of play started good, but slowed to a crawl around the the 6th hole. Finished the round in almost 5 hours with enough daylight to spare. I always tell myself to play this course more often as it's usually one of the better conditioned courses in the LA area and more affordable than the OC courses.

Played Wednesday, 6/3. The greens are in good shape. The fairways are in good condition. The rough is overall good with some thin/bare spots. The bunkers are fair to good depending on how impacted the sand becomes due to watering. The tee boxes are fair to good. Navy GC has made some changes in the last several months due to the water shortage. There are some areas that are now "environmental lateral hazards". The pond that is left off of the 13th tee is being converted into a sand filled waste area. The layout is a joy to play and is easily walkable. The staff is always friendly.

Back at the Destroyer course after buggin' outta work early on a Wed afternoon 1:30PM tee time, got a $26 walking rate with some buds (don't tell the boss). PoP a bit on the slow side after catching the group ahead on the fourth hole, 4:30, with longer waits on the par 3's. Greens still in good shape, fairways dry but never had a bad lie. Wish I could say the same for the bunkers which I entered ... not fun. Thin lies with more of those tiny, dancing foot tracks with rakes 10 feet away ... Lord, give me strength to understand this mentality. The drought has forced them to reduce water in the several ponds, so they are getting lower and lower. One left of #13 fairway has dried up completely and there's tons of old balls sitting there for the taking if you want to walk out and get your spikes all muddy. The guys at the Navy course are good folk, very helpful and personable. Fun times, go play.
