A rare appearance at River View. Last played here about 6 years ago. With a 6:22am tee time, it was weird to stand on the first tee, despite a number of people being on site, and nobody coming to the tee? Having the lights on the 1st hole gives a false sense of light, so that when you get to #2, it's dark!

We were actually the second group off, following a twosome in a cart. Our walking threesome played through on #8, then it was clear sailing. Played at a nice easy pace in just under 3 hours. It was cold out so nice to keep moving. Can not imagine how cold it would have felt if we had taken a cart?

Greens are by far the highlight on this course. They were excellent ! The rest of the course was, well River View. Lots of scruffy areas, but in all fairness, the course was the driest I've ever played it and overall probably in the best condition I have seen it. (Remember I rarely play here )

Not my favorite course. I get bored with almost every hole being uphill the last 20+ yards. Being a person who does not hit the ball high, makes for a real challenge. The good thing about the course for me is that it demands many right to left shots off the tee, which is typical of my ball flight. I can see where a slicer would really struggle here.

12/4 using Golf Moose $49 2some on a somewhat breezy cool in the shade comfortable in the sun morning leisurely completing a 345 POP. Fairways are a mix of grasses which presents with some varied conditions a little thin in places and ok to good in others--very little rough along most of the fairways except for a few patches but thicker and more challenging near and around the greens. Ares bordering the river bottom are sandy and thin.
Tees are mostly level but thin with multiple divots. Found greenside bunker on # 6--deep firm heavy sand quite playable. By observation most bunkers looked to have good sand but many had way too many un-raked footprints.
Greens were the best part--medium fast mostly smooth with enough slope and topography to judge to make putting quite interesting.
Met the new pro Robert who fits the mold of River View staff--frienly easy going and golfer oriented.

Played 11/26 in the morning. Right off the bat I have to say the 2nd hole tee box is possibly the most dangerous spot to stand on at any course in California, our group came a foot away from hitting someone and then we were barely missed by two balls ourselves. Anyways the course was in its standard condition. Fairways were okay nothing amazing but pretty playable. Tee boxes were beat up on par 3s and usually uneven with divot damage. The greens were actually pretty smooth but also a little slow. The course is as random as I remember with some really narrow long par 3s and some really easy par 5s. Deals online for 25 bucks a person, pretty good price point that gets you to come back once in a while.

11/13 using golf moose $49 2some off at 740 following 3 groups from the Monday men's club and still had a 345 POP. Most areas of the fairways have adequate cover with mixed varieties of grasses and generally good cushion--lies were good for the most part. Rough is quite varied--very thin in some areas and then thick and deep in others especially along the hill sides--with sme equally difficult ares around the greens.
Tees are level but rather thin and the par 3s are quite chewed up. Did not test any bunkers today but from observation only most looked ok.
Greens are almost all the way back being receptive while still rolling about medium -medium fast with only a hint of bumpiness on a few.
Staff members are easy going and golfer oriented.

11/3 using golf moose $49 2some with a POP of just under 4hr. Fairways are soft and mostly have thick cover except for a few of the back 9s where they are still recovering from last years floods and an overdose of sand--still hd good enough lies overall. Rough is a little inconsistent short and thin in some areas and then really long and juicy in others--quite random.
Tees were varied with some thin and chewed up and others a little shaggy. Bunkers looked well groomed but were a little thin over hard pack.
1st few greens were rather bumpy and slow but improved later on the course--quite soft and receptive--not as good as I have seen them in the past.
Check in was very smooth--staff members are friendly and casual--had an 815 tee time but arrived t 730 and was out by 750 as we were told we could go when ready.

3/15 using groupon $45 2some with range balls and lunch--off at 8am and done before 1130. Most fairways ok to a little thin with the ones close to the river still not recovered from the flood as there is quite a bit of residual sand covering the ground with some grass starting to peek thru. Rough is patchy thin to non-existent or deep and thick. 2 bunkers I found 1 and 6 were nicely groomed had good sand rather course and granular but very playable. Tees level for the most part and varied from lush to having a lot of divots on some par 3s.
Greens had a lot of dew and were quite a bit slower and occasionally a little bumpy. Had to play them more firmly and with less break--had a lot of lip outs so was almost there. Greens here vary from rather small for some of the par 3s to more on the large size with some contours and tiers and since there are a lot of uphill blind shots it can be hard to get the right distance.
Staff is friendly easy going and golfer friendly. This is a good community course providing some challenging target golf and with the discounts generally available is a very good value--not high end but fun.

3/3 using Golf Moose $49 2some with range balls on a warm pleasant am teeing off at 815 with No one ahead nor behind for a POP of 315 with about 15 min lost looking for a couple of wayward shots. Course is fully open as of 3/2. Fairways are ok with the exception of areas of 12, 13 and a little on 5 and 16 where the river over flowed leaving lots of sand which has been drug smooth but with just a little grass poking through. Most of the grass areas provided decent lies--very few thin areas were observed just didn't have to play from any. Not much rough along fairways but there are areas where it is abundant and thick like between 11 and 8 left of that big tree--more areas of deeper rough closer to most green as well. Tees were mixed 2 and 3 were quite chewed up--most others had ok cover and marker placement was generally level.
Played out of bunkers on 6 10 and 13--sand is course rather firm but deep enough to avoid bottoming out-- sand was consistent in these 3 bunkers and getting out was not the issue--making the 4-6 foot putt was elusive. On 10 in the right green side bunker where evidently 3=4 hacks had been before me judging from the different foot prints--now I know its a lot to ask to walk around to get the rake-- but this time the rake is RIGHT there--its such a joy to be able to leave the world a little better than I found it--hey this should also be a new rule to allow to rake then drop from 1/2 inch.
Greens are really nice to look at deep green and smooth rolling at medium fast speed with a little more grain influence and pins generally were positioned to add to the intrigue--did not seem to have that many dead straight putts. Mostly on the firm side as chips and pitches tended to roll out. # 9(100 yard par 3) had a lot of un-repaired ball marks(which was the exception) due to being the most reachable of the par 3s and hence the most neglected.
Staff is friendly and relaxed. Course is a decent muni-type with a quirky character that makes for a fun affordable outing--the greens are among the best around.

Rarely do I take major issue with the current course ranking system but River View at 6.24? Sure, if you're a lifetime member of the Links at Victoria and get out once a year to a different scene, but a 6.24 rating for this train wreck? If you are familiar with my reviews, then you know I always find the good in just about any place, but it's going to be pretty rough with this one. Okay, the greens were pretty nice. They were soft from the rains and there were a few too many ball marks for anyone's liking, but they were well maintained, tricky and challenging, and rolled true while holding shots very well. Unfortunately, that's the best of it. The fairways were a mess due to the recent rains but certainly I've seen other courses handle the positives of rain much better. Still plenty of thin lies and burned out areas, along with a whole host of rough that could rarely be differentiated from the actual fairways. The actual rough itself was just mud and sticks. The tee boxes were beat up pretty good and the sand traps looked to be thin where dry and muddy messes where not. And yes, a lot of this comes down to the post-rain timing, so take it all with a grain of salt I guess. However, no weather can explain this nutty layout. To be fair, I was okay with the quirks of the front nine for a while, and even found holes like #6 and #8 to be pretty fun. But the exaggerated oddness of all the holes on the back nine with their elevated tee boxes, left turns and then elevated greens, all the while traversing under bridges and across park areas with any number of homeless settlements around each corner, well, let's just say the experience was not top notch. I even found the $39 to ride a bit too much for what this place currently is right now. No cart girl service, however there is surprisingly GPS on the ancient carts, which is kind of funny. I did play with two local characters (and a very nice local kid on the HS team) who were unfortunately the very likely cause of our 5+ hour round, but at the end of the day they were good fun. I'm a bit of a course junkie in the sense that I always like investigating courses and layouts in advance, and this was always a place where, despite the rumors, I wanted to try out for myself to see just how odd this track was. And boy did I. I do not like being too negative on GK and I feel that I'm always very fair and usually 'looking on the bright side,' but sorry, couldn't do it with River View. I won't be back. (Update: Don't let the 5.0 rating I gave the course fool you - I actually rated the greens a 7 as they were quite good but the skew towards the greens means that rating is way higher than it should be overall - more like 3.5-3.9 at best.)

No rough along fairways, some longer grass areas around. Traps have heavy course sand which was rather damp and presented a challenge. Tees are ok--markers place on level areas.
Greens were really good--smooth medium fast and consistent--receptive.
Good customer service as usual.
