A late review for the GK/GM outing at the Huntington Club on a picture-perfect day in Huntington Beach on Monday, 1/8/24 – sunny, not too cold, and very little wind to affect shots. Played with good groupmates Gary and Lindsay, and (gasp!) a non-GKer Dave, who I think Lindsay was trying to recruit the whole round!

I had played in the first GK/GM outing here two years ago, and enjoyed the course but had a terrible ballstriking day. I was anxious to get back and give the course another try – bad timing, as I’m deep in the grip of my long knee-surgery layoff, and wasn’t able to bring a consistent game.

Course conditions were good. I only noted one tee where the stance was a little sloping, otherwise cut nicely and level. Fairway coverage was consistently good and lies were fine. Rough varied from benign to 2-3” and sticky. I was in 3 greenside traps and all were a little short of playable sand. Greens were good – full coverage, smooth and pretty fast. They were very firm and approach shots didn’t leave large marks, and they released quite a bit. Chipping from around the green had to account for significant runouts.

Comfortable carts with interactive GPS and distance to the pin location. Glad to see that courses are returning to having drinking water available on-course. Saw the cart girl several times – didn’t partake of the BBQ on offer at the turn.

One of these days I’d like to play this course when I’m hitting the ball well. Recommended.

Played in the Golfmoose outing yesterday, as well. Previous reviews are spot on. Everything was in pretty good shape. About the only thing I can expand on is the fairways were great. I hit just about every fairway and had awesome lies all day. They are very undulated, so lies were often on a slight slope, making approach shots more fun and thought provoking. I'm partial to this course as I like this style of architecture. Trees, lakes, doglegs, some slight elevation changes, etc. I could easily be a member here (if I could afford it and had the time). Great seeing Johnny at check in!! We had a blast. Thanks again Golfmoose for providing an excellent value, it's $180 next month with the SCGA, ouch. $125 was a good value.

Rode the golds this morning 1/8/24 teeing off at 11:10am group 1b of the GK/Golfmoose outing. Joined by John, Mark and Steve under sunny skies with cooler high 50s weather and about a club wind. We had a great time with a relaxed pace around 4 hrs 25 minutes. Very nice clubhouse staff, Marshall and cart gal.

Practice facilities included a nice big range on mats, nice size putting green. There was a chipping area and bunker just left of 8 green.

1st time playing this private. Common theme was houses left of the tee with ample room to work a left to right ball flight. There were some nice water features on the course with both par 3s on the front requiring a carry onto the greens. Most holes here are right in front of you with no blind shots or severe elevation changes. A very fun course to play with some green complexes that were small or narrow on approach. Really enjoyed the layout.

The greens looked super healthy and after talking with a member on the putting green he said you will see some wobbles out there. I thought the greens were slow and at times grainy and bumpy but were fair and like I stated in decent shape holding iron shots nicely. Rated 7/10

Fairways were in great shape mainly lush, full coverage and very pleasing to the eye. Rated 8.5/10

Rough was also nice and lush and not to grabby just off the fairways. Rated 8.5/10

Tees were very lush, level and in good to great shape. Rated 8.5/10

Was in one greenside bunker that contained nice sand easy to splash out of. Rated 7/10.

The course is in great shape for December. Recommended.

Played here today in group 1B of the GolfMoose/GK outing, paired with Gary, Steve, and Johnny. Fun group as always. Gorgeous winter day with blue skies, medium wind, and mostly comfortable temps. POP was great for these events, a little under 4.5 hours with minimal waiting.

Conditions are very nice. Greens are mostly smooth, around medium speed, and accept full shots well. Uphill putts were slower than downhill putts were fast, if that makes sense. Fairways were excellent with consistent coverage, providing good lies. There's short rough that isn't too penal and then there are areas of really deep stuff that is almost for sure a lost ball. Both are in good condition. Gold (blue equivalent) tee boxes are well defined and in great condition. Bunkers were in decent condition but could be better if the the priority for sand was reversed – I was in a greenside bunker that could've used much more sand and a fairway bunker that had way too much sand.

This was my second time playing here, and the previous time was probably 15-20 years ago when it was known as SeaCliff CC. I don't remember a ton from that time, but I do recognize a huge effort to enhance course conditions and beauty. It's more memorable and impressive now than it was then. The layout won't really "wow" you but it's solid throughout. Thanks to Johnny for organizing these events!

Second time running a golf event at The Huntington Club and even better this time around. All the accolades of my previous review back in April 2022 plus perfect weather and an excellent conditioned golf course.

Great day teeing it up with rgm2525, kmersola and jjrauen. So fun when GKers can make it to our Golf Moose / GK Private Course events.

Greens in terrific shape and tricky to putt on. Medium Fast/Smooth/Mostly Firm.

Fairways, mostly kikuyu/bermunda providing excellent sitting up lies but little roll out. Lush/Full Coverage.

Rough, mostly kikuyu/bermunda, about 1 to 3 inches, mostly lush but the ball tended to sit down.

Bunkers, good sand quality but not to the standard of the rest of the course. On hole 12 we came accross a bunker renovation. Need to learn more about it. Still decent acceptable conditions.

Tee Box, all in good shape, lush, cut and level.

Definately going to keep booking outings here.

Highly Recommended.

Played 4-18-22 in a Golf Moose outing with John, Bob, and Pat in a shotgun start and finishing in a little under 5 hours. Tee boxes were in good shape, lush and level. Fairways were nice with good coverage, nice lies and decent roll out. Rough was about two inches longer than fairways and fairly easy to hit from. Was in one greenside bunker that had a nice layer of sand and easy to hit from. Greens were punched about three weeks ago and still not completely healed, but still putted okay with a little bumpiness, rolling medium/fast pace and mostly semi-soft with a few being a little firmer. Very enjoyable course with a nice variety of holes mostly flat with some minor elevation and some water mixed in. Not to difficult but fun course to play.

Had a great time playing with GKers rgm2525, patbrannagan and his friend Robert on Monday at the Golf Moose / Greenskeeper.org Private Course Outing. I was not able to schedule a GK Guru round prior to this event so opted to play instead of hosting a Closest To The Pin contest. I love getting to know everyone better that come to these outings doing a CTP contest but this was a nice change of pace to experience a private golf course I’ve never played before. I’m probably going to be playing/taking photos/reviewing the golf courses more often in coming GM/GK Private Course Outings.

The Huntington Club is formally SeaCliff Country Club. The new ownership changed the name a year ago and has since been reinvesting much into better playing conditions and general improvements. The new owners hired former Head Pro of SeaCliff Country Club for over 15 years Travis Brasher, better known as the Co-Founder of Travis Mathew Apparel, and now Founder of a new golf management company Camaraderie Clubs Management.

It was a great first time playing and golf organizer experience. The staging area is fantastic for any size golf tournament with carts, driving range, clubhouse and practice putting all in close proximity to each other. Their staff had our event correctly staged on time and were very helpful/friendly throughout the day. The golf course is well suited for all skill levels yet certainly not easy. The layout it mostly flat with mature trees, water hazards, small undulating greens, many bunkers, warm weather turf (bermuda/kikuyu) turf and poa greens. Amble room off the tee to grip and rip PROVIDED the rough is cut down. They could quickly turn this course into a beast if they maintained their kikuyu rough a few inches higher. But I’m sure the members would NOT appreciate that – LOL. Take a look at the photos I posted.

The greens were aerated a little over 3 weeks ago prior to our outing so there were still signs of aeration on the greens with mild bumpiness, somewhat inconsistent speeds and inconsistent firmness one would expect. However they still played very well with good speed and mostly smooth. Fairways full coverage and lush. Rough full coverage but cut to only 2 inches making it easy to play from. Tee boxes were in great shape, mostly level with little divot damage. Bunkers were groomed nicely but lower than expected sand quality. Firm, yet consistent and playable. Overall the peak conditions for this course should be in Summer/Early Fall but as of April still excellent.

Highly Recommended to play if you get a chance, join or have an outing at.

Played in the GK/Golf Moose outing at The Huntington Club with an 11am shotgun on Monday, 4/18/22. We caught a perfect golf day – sunny, warm, and a steady breeze off the ocean. Paired with GKers Lindsay, Perry, and first time meeting Marvin, and we had a fun round with everyone somewhat struggling with their games (but no one more than me!). Played in just under 5 hours, which I think is pretty standard for this type of event. No real stoppage points, just grinding hole to hole and waiting on shots about half the time.
This was my first time here and I enjoyed the layout. The entire course is very nicely landscaped and attractive – even the hazard areas and areas they let grow a little wild were attractive and adequately managed. I think this is one of the pricier areas in Huntington Beach and the homes surrounding the course were generally large and well-kept. My only “negative” thought of the day on the course visuals was back on #15 tee, looking out over the freakishly barren Bolsa Chica salt flats/oil field – just a single disconnect on an otherwise pleasant viewing day.

From the large modern clubhouse, the first hole sweeps uphill to an elevated green complex, while to the left the 18th hole sweeps downhill across a couple of ponds to a sloping mound of a target. The clubhouse looks out over a large water feature and you can see the grass driving range and practice putting green. The holes you can see give you a preview of holes to come – tree-lined, many bunkers lining fairways and fronting greens, scattered attractive water features, and fairly wide fairways and smallish greens.

Greens had been punched within the past couple weeks and the holes were still visible, but for the most part they didn’t affect the roll of the ball; greens rolled well at medium+ speed. Many of the greens are small, narrow, and are plateau-style with runoff on several sides. Only a couple of the greens had distinct tiering – most of our putts were straightforward with predictable breaks. Greens were very firm and we saw very few ballmarks. Fairway lies were generally good, and rough was mostly short and very playable, with longer penal growth only further offline. You could get into bare areas far afield under the larger trees. Tees were some of the best I’ve played in a long time – engineered rectangles, dead flat and nicely grassed. Some had been recently punched and some were very firm, but in general all were near-perfect. There are lots of bunkers on the course and all could use a helping of sand – in general they are pretty firm with a thin playing layer. Some of the bunkers have very high lips all around which makes access difficult. Rakes were out and sand bottles were on the carts.

Carts were very comfortable with plush seats. Carts have an interactive GPS system which gives distances to features and pin location, but today the pin locations were all incorrect, so your own tools were needed. The GPS also does not show the locations of other carts on the hole. Several small short-game practice areas are scattered around the front nine on club land off the lines of play. Maintenance crews were working all over the course, including crews that were verticutting fairways on holes 4-7. They had no hesitation driving close to where you were hitting or continuing their work while you were teeing off. Saw the cart girl a couple times on the back nine, and it looked like there was a snack bar at the clubhouse. I didn’t get into the pro shop to see if a yardage book was available, but there are some distance plates in the fairways.

I hit the ball as poorly as I can ever remember, and apologized to my playing partners for my ragged play. I would definitely play here again, given the opportunity to try to score a little better on this interesting and challenging course.

Played the Huntington golf course today as part of the Golf moose outing. Checked in with Johnny and chatted for a minute and then off to the range to hit a few balls. I played this course about 10 years ago but don’t remember anything about it so I was looking forward to it. Got to play with Perry, Lindsey anf first time meeting Dave Connally, a pleasure meeting you Dave. We teed off on number 1 on a beautiful but breezy day and off we went. I love the private clubs that have the nice gps and speakers included and these carts included coolers for both driver and passenger a very cool touch. Carts were also very comfortable with very thick and plush seats. I very much like the course with left to right and right to left holes and wide fairways made for a very fun day. Maintenance staff were out there most of the day and it looks like they were punching certain fairways but that didn’t influence tee shots or anything. Greens were recently punched probably 2 or 3 weeks ago still a little bumpy but were ok. They were fine to play from. We saw cart girls a couple of times and a snack bar was also opened as well. I had great day playing with the guys and always enjoy playing with Perry and I am looking forward to the Desert Willow outing. The Huntington Club formerly Seacliff is very nice club with a great staff and if given the chance I would play it again no questions asked.. Definitely recommended..
