Got to get my first round post op in this GK cup. I picked this as my first round since it is now close to my house. Got to play for the first time with Dave and Gus. it was good seeing Greg again. I second all the previous reviews of the course. It was fun but the pace was very long and tiring. I hope to play with the group again as I start my way back to playing.

Good times yesterday with the GK family as Ron and Matt battled for the GK Cup. We were in the first foursome, teeing off at around 10:15, a little behind schedule and waiting on almost every shot for a 5.5 + hour round. Ugh! This was my first time here and I found the course to be very interesting and fun. Nice facilities and great customer service.

The greens were very nice. Receptive and smooth (except for a couple times when I noticed some minimal bumpiness). They were somewhat on the soft side and I repaired many ball marks throughout the day. Speed was medium-fast, getting a little faster as the day went on. Mostly large sized greens, except for hole 2, which I thought was smaller and more narrow. Maybe because I missed short and left, lol.

Fairways were nice overall. I found a couple tight lies here and there, but coverage was good throughout the course. It was very nice to hit from. I have been out of practice a little lately and I laid some sod over my ball on a couple of occasions, so I could say they were on the soft side. I did get plenty of roll out on several of my drives, which made for some good yardage. Liking that.

Rough was nice, too. There were a couple of areas with deeper, more lush Bermuda grass (notably the left side of holes 2 and 18 approach), but good and consistent throughout the course.

Bunker sand was good quality, light, and well groomed. I found a few and they were easy enough to hit from.

Tees (we played the white tees) were mostly good. A couple (I don't remember which ones) were slightly uneven in spots, but overall good.

Decent burger and salad in the clubhouse after. I don't recommend the fries, though.

Made the trek down to Eagle Glen for the GK CUP final. I had three agenda's for making this trip.

Begin Lobbying for GK Cup 13 Final to be held in Northern California (hopefully bribing JohnnyGK with a round at Pebble Beach helped)!!!

Enforce dress code violations and award style points as the official GK fashion police (sorry Johnny but Perry got the nod with the matching shirt, shoe laces and hat)

And most importantly enjoy a bit of golf with some great, no scratch that, fantastic bunch of GK'ers.

This is my first time playing Eagle Glen and I must say it's a super fun layout. Lot's of elevation changes and like Nickesquire said, the front nine is mainly target golf with several holes demanding less than driver off the tee.

Condition wise the course was decent all around. Nothing spectacular but nothing horrible either. The first few greens were bumpy but then they smoothed out. Greens were soft and very receptive to approach shots. I never had an issue with a lie in the fairway but a couple of the tee boxes were trashed.

I avoided the bunkers all day so I'll let Roarksown1 give a report on the sand traps.

I don't know if I'll ever be in the area again to play this course a second time but if given the opportunity, I certainly won't pass it up.

I was disappointed that I didn't get to do a wardrobe change at the turn. Might just have to wait til' Pebble to debut that outfit.....

Joined the party today for the GK Cup 12 final match – congrats to Ron for joining the Cup winner fraternity. Had a great time playing with Greg, Tom, and Gus, and seeing other old and new GK acquaintances. Conditions were similar to my round last Tuesday, but the course was drier and firmer throughout. And unfortunately, the POP was much worse – overall 5.5+ hours with a lot of waiting on the back nine in the hot sun. Saw the cart girl several times, as well as a marshal driving around but not making much impact. Excellent breakfast burrito before and club sandwich after in the grille.

Rode the Blues (6279/70.4/131) with JohnnyGK, Hmtgolfguy and Lotrgolfer48 in around 5.5H in the GK Cup 12 Final match. The weather was mostly sunny, breezy and hot. Thanks to John for setting up and coordinating getting 16 guys out for the GK Cup final. Really like the layout, lots of elevation changes and the greens are challenging. Hilly layout with some forced carries and a few blind shots. Most holes have hazards down both sides, but most are not overly tight. The front 9 is more target golf, the back 9 more wide open. The Bermuda tees were mediocre. Many needed more turf and divot repair. The Bermuda fairways were better to play from than they look. Not lush, but I rarely had a thin lie either. The mostly Bermuda rough was thinner than the fairways but still had adequate coverage. Mowed down, not overly penal. The fairway traps were okay, more hard packed. The green side sand traps were good. Higher quality sand and decently maintained. The poa annua greens putted consistently medium speed, were fairly smooth and held well struck irons well. The customer service was very good from everyone encountered. Drink cart out and making the rounds. Plenty of water stations on the course. GPS does not work on the carts w/o an extra fee. This would be a very challenging course to walk, combination of the hills and the sheer distance from some greens to the next tee. Recommended, fun layout.

I was looking for someplace to get some swings before the GK Cup 12 Final this coming Sunday. Many of the courses near me in south OC are too $$ or in poor shape (based on GK reviews), so I opted to go to Eagle Glen to preview the conditions for Sunday. I got a $25 rate at 2:00pm on the course website on Wednesday, 9/26/18, and when I booked Monday the tee sheet looked pretty open. But on arrival it looked like the wild west – one cart guy running around repurposing carts for players as others finished their round, no starter and the marshal was leaving for the day at 2pm. The first tee was busy and the twosome I was assigned with was not around, but a twosome scheduled at 1:30 but delayed waiting for a cart joined me. We waited on every shot and finished in 4.5+ hours. Weather was sunny and hot without too much wind. Overall the course is in pretty good shape – it might play slightly differently for a morning round Sunday than in the late afternoon today. Greens were in good shape – receptive, rolling pretty smoothly at medium+ speed, and I don’t recall any obvious thin or bare areas on the greens. The usual number of recent and old ballmarks. Fairway lies were generally good but there were numerous scattered thin/bare patches as well as wet areas. Rough was all over the place depending on where you were on the course, ranging from bare/rocky to lush and 8” deep. Sand was in good shape but firm and thin, with many unraked areas. Many tees were lumpy or sloping (Blue). New GPS systems on my cart and the twosome were not working. The group in front of us (1:50 tee time, in case the course reads this) was slow, loud, and were driving carts right up to and alongside greens. Many blue tees were back at the black plates today. R-W-B flag rotation, so 3 of the 4 par-5s were the same color. Adequate water available, and the refill rack on #10 had sand available for the first time I can remember. A doe and two fawns munching grass on fairway #2 didn’t pay us any attention. Pace is often an issue here because the first 5 holes are very challenging in terms of forced carries, prevalence of ESAs, and sloping terrain. So, it’s easy to get off to a poor/slow start, backing up those behind you. Likewise, holes 16-18 also have a lot of trouble around them, ensuring a slower finish. Recommended.

Played 9/20 at 0830, senior rate of $42. Course recently had seasonal maintenance but recent reviews seemed to be favorable. 5 years ago this was one of my favorite tracks, then all of a sudden it seemed like the crews went on vacation and forgot to come back. There was nothing good to say about the course. I thought they were about to bring in the bull dozers and turn this place into a parking lot.

Then all of a sudden, seasonal maintenance alerts and a couple of favorable reviews! Now for those of you who may have given up on EG, like I did, I think a visit return round might be worth taking. Tee boxes were very good, not great. Fairways were the most notable difference. Good cover, a few brown spot and some “under repair” but to me that’s a good thing. At least they are working on improvements. A 75% improvement from 2 years ago. Rough was cut back and not real penalizing, hit and miss on the conditions. The greens were punched recently so understandably they were still a little bouncy. I’d say about 90% recovered.

POP was at 4.5 hours, they had a full card in the morning and when we were packing up and getting ready to leave a tournament was coming in. The Army was present, that was cool seeing the guys there in uniform and a humvee parked out in front!!

In conclusion if you haven’t been out here for awhile I think a visit is worth taking. The efforts of bringing the course back from the dead are showing. Keep up the good work EG.

Reviews are a lot about expectation. Hearing that the GK Cup was going to visit here made me expect great conditions. My memories of this place long ago were of great conditions - so I was expecting the same. Thinking of Eagle Glen as one of the better courses in this area also kept my expectations high.

How was it? Fine - I guess... Practice green lowered my expectations - furry and bumpy - the actual greens were a bit slow and not exactly smooth but they were better than the practice ones. Fairways are 70-80% good but you will probably get one or two unlovable lies. There is some standing water and muddy parts and some areas that should have grass but need some Rogaine. Rough could be one of 5 different grass types and any type of lie possible.

Once I get over my expectations and think about it - It's one of those mountain courses that strikes a good balance of holes and difficulty. Parts of it are pretty generous and that takes grass to do that - so in that case - I'll take some patchy areas. For the $40 I payed - totally worth it.

Played Thursday 8/23 and was glad I did. New carts with new GPS system with music. Course is in the best shape in a long time. Fairways and super good coverage in fact since we went out at 6:30 they were still damp and no roll and the rough was about 1" high so the ball did not roll into the valleys if you were a little off. It looks like they have replaced all the sand in the bunkers with nice white sand. Heading back next week as $37 is a bargain.
